A team of portuguese reporters went to North Korea and while there they visited and filmed a Portuguese language class in one of the universities and they talk about the game, that was the first game broadcasted live like in NK tv history, so they all know that Portugal won, and one of the boys in the class became a Ronaldo's fanboy, imagine that there is one person in North Korea that speaks Portuguese thanks to Ronaldo almost unbelievable.

Also keep in mind that North korea rarely gets exposure to global football. The fact that N.korea qualified for World Cup is pretty impressive. Deep down I feel like N.korea would have been regular participant of world cup like Japan, S.korea if it was about their govt. and policies.

This is the match that cemented my love for cr7. I was a kid back then. Had heard about Cristiano before but never quite saw him play live before this match if my memory serves me right.. That goal by cr7 getting the ball on his head and scoring, it blew me away.. He became my idol since that day

Fun fact: Jong Tae-Se/Chong Tese (NK's No. 9 in this game) had a pretty successful pro career after the world cup and played for example for 1. FC Köln. He's still the only player from NK in the whole Bundesliga history. Currently he's playing in the first Japanese league.

@@Mantulisme my answer is no, the last players remain at european league was Han Kwang Song (2020) On 2 January 2020, Juventus bought Han from Cagliari for €3.5 million, before selling him to Qatari side Al-Duhail six days later for €7 million. Han scored five goals in 14 domestic games, and played two Asian Champions League games. He helped his side win the Qatar Stars League. Due to the sanctions against North Korea, which prevents North Koreans from working abroad, Han was released by Al-Duhail and was due to return to his country.

North Korea's first match in that cup was against Brazil, they only lost 2-1 and played very well, so the government was excited and allowed the second match, against Portugal, to be broadcast live, it was shameful. When the players returned home, they were forced to stand up for 7 hours listening to criticism from journalists, the coach lost his job and was forced to work as a bricklayer.

I remember the journalists doing conferences with South Korean journalists who told the story in detail.

According to a well known North Korean defector who is now a journalist, the manager and his family (wife and 1 daughter) were actually executed few months later for an unknown reason. He wrote article on dongailbo about this in 2020. This was actually a serious incident in North Korea, as it was first game that was ever broadcast live. All the North Korean political and military leadership gathered at Pyongyang stadium to watch the game live, and two elderly North Korean military generals died of heart attack on the scene. Perhaps the unfortunate football manager could've kept his life if Portugal didn't play as hard and won something like 3-0 instead. The manager actually worked very hard to bring North Korea to world cup for first time in 44 years. It should be noted that these Portuguese footballers indirectly contributed to gruesome death of 3 innocent people.

Fun fact: North Korea originally weren’t going to televise any of their games, however after a couple of good performances (including a 2-1 loss against Brazil) they decided to televise this one. The players after the game weren’t executed, however the coach was forced to work in construction.

People are reporting that the coach was shamed or whatever after returining to NK and forced to work as a bricklayer, I want to point out that that was reportes by radio free asia a notiriously biased source and it is most likely false. If anyone wonders most of the players kept still playing for the nk national team afterwards while the coach while sacked is most likely now coaching a 2nd tier team in the north korean league. So while he got "punished" It was hardly that severe.

This match was the first ever football-match I saw back at 2010 (the first time I watched Ronaldo and the time where he instantly became my idol). As much as I am happy for Portugal, I’m really concerned about the North Koreans. It’s 11 years after that day, I hope they are doing well. 🇵🇹❤️

I remember when they talked about the reports showing North Korea at the World Cup. The first game was against Brazil and they lost 2-1 and as the match was recorded, they edited the video to make it look like they defeated Brazil 0-1. Kim Jong-un's government was excited about the "real result" of the previous match and had the match broadcast live. The result was this: the North Koreans watched their team being massacred live and to this day, they say that the players of that team were executed, which may be true.
