Actually, I have always felt intrigued by the history of Portugal's establishment so long before Spain's. Each time I have tried to get into it (I am in all other European history), I have always got stuck in all the dynastics and name-changing of the non muslim areas and kingdoms. There is a lot of ground to cover. But this time I am gonna go all the way since we are going there. I am going to get as familiar of the post 711 AD Iberian peninsular history as I am with WW2 history. And believe me - I know A LOT about WW2 history.

The Romance languages underwent a softening of the C next to the letters , which manifested differently in different languages (e.g. in italian, the soft C is pronounced like "Ch" in English). The hard /k/ sound is much older, and used to be pronounced like that in all instances of C prior to the softening unless I'm mistaken. I'm willing to be proven wrong, but I need evidence if I'm to believe what you're saying.
