You are, then, the living Treaty of Windsor !! .and if you love Portugal and your wife is Portuguese you must know that Portugal has some of the best desserts in the world... like... Pasteis de nata... Queijadas (spelling?)... ginginha... Bolo Rei... and you must be aware that Portugal's Pasteis De Nata have won the top prize two years in a row, as the best dessert in the European Union. Thousands of tourists attest that the bread in Portugal is the best bread they have ever tasted.... and no, I am not Portuguese but my girl-friend is a beautiful Portuguese girl...

I'm not talking about the video, which is wonderful and very well produced, I'm talking about the fantastic voiceover and the great history lesson it gave in a magnificent way. It's a pride to see a Portuguese child being so proud of his parents' home. Keep up the fine work as it was one of the best history lessons I've seen so far. Congratulations and a hug of friendship.

It wasn't, it was created by D. Afonso Henriques, not a templar, we did however get much help from crusaders and the like during the reconquista Additionally, the Portuguese were the only nation to accept the templars with open arms when the Pope deemed them heretics and persecuted them. To this day, the Portuguese branch of the Order, the Order of Christ, still exists.

You forgot to mention one macabre episode. Upon his coronation as King of Portugal, he exhumed her body. Made her be dressed with the vests of the Queen, set her royal ring and seat her on the throne. The entire court was obliged to kiss the ring on the dead body. Adding to the vengeance towards the assassins. It´s not difficult to understand how he´s cognomen became D. Pedro "The vengeful"... Cheers ;-)

1:00 This is a commun misconception, but the"Iberians" only lived in Eastern Spain, Portugal was inhabited by other tribes like the Lusitanians, the Gallaecians and Tartessians. The Celtiberians were the result of a mix between Celts and Iberians indeed, but in Central/Northeast Spain, since there were no Iberians in Portugal, there were no Celtiberians either. Also, the "Celts" who arrived in the 6th century B.C are the Hallstat Culture Celts, this detail is important because the native people of North-western iberia, like the Gallaecians are claimed by several historians and archeologists to be a Celtic culture of its own: The Bell Beaker culture (also present in Ireland, Brittain and Atlantic France) which is older than the Hallstat Culture itself. So its not really Celts upon Iberians, but Celts upon proto-Celts.

There is a Roman temple in Portugal too? So cool. I am from French Louisiana and was born near New Iberia in southern Louisiana. Acadians and Isleños among many. There is a lot of Spanish, French, and Italian influence that made its way to Louisiana by way of the Iberian Peninsula. Portuguese reads like the three languages combined. Occitan is a neat the area where a lot of the Romance languages meet. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Occitan_language Morocco, the Basque language, is near there also. We also have Scottish and Irish influence in Louisiana. I love the Romance languages, but only speak American English.

It did not end. The country still exists and it exists because the Portuguese like the Lusitans always wanted to govern themselves. That is why Portugal is not part of Spain like other former kingdoms in the Iberian Peninsula. The story of the History of the country is amazing. I am Portuguese and very proud of my heritage and I recommend to all my foreign friends to read about my country,to visit my country and to see why this is an old proud country. The country has basically the same borders it had back in the 12th ans 13th centuries but many portyuguese died to maintain that country as Portugal. I leave you with a couple of questions. Whay Portuguese speak Portuguese and not Spanish? Why does Portugal maintain the same borders if there are not great natural obstacles between Spain and Portugal- All main revers are born in Spain and flow to Portugal, the mountains in Portugal do not constitute an obstacle they flow from Spain to Portugal. The great obstacle to invasions, conuists and claims to the throne were the PORTUGUESE.

Each time I have tried to get into it (I am in all other European history), I have always got stuck in all the dynastics and name-changing of the non muslim areas and kingdoms. There is a lot of ground to cover. But this time I am gonna go all the way since we are going there. I am going to get as familiar of the post 711 AD Iberian peninsular history as I am with WW2 history. And believe me - I know A LOT about WW2 history.

I don't know about in Portuguese, but in English, Celt is pronounced with a hard "C." Like Kelt.
@miguelcoelho38776 жыл бұрын
That is not entirely true: in Scotland, the name of one of the most famous of all football clubs, Celtic, is pronounced with a soft "C", thus Celtic, not Keltic. Also, as a matter of interest, on the Maps from Ptolemy of the then known world and, more specifically, of the peoples (tribes?) of Western Europe, the only place where one may find the word the closest associated with "Celtic" appears in an area of the Iberian Peninsula between the mouth of the river Tagus (present-day Lisbon) and the area north of the Algarve, Portugal. That word is in reference to the Celtici and it appears clearly marked on the page describing the Iberian Peninsula.

In Portuguese it is indeed a soft C, as in an S almost Celts = Celtas Kelts = Seltas But that's mainly because C's followed by e's are always soft

Interesting. Later, when discussing Conimbriga, he pronounced Celtic correctly! His director fell down on the job at the start, but got it right eventually. The script is factual, but not enlivened by really good writing or delivery, and the music is an annoying intrusion.

one small correction, Iberia was the roman name for the spanish side of the peninsula, the portuguese side (and a part of spain) was called Lusitania from the Lusitanian tribes that lived there (estimated population: 30 000), these people represented a real life version of he famous gauls from the "Asterix&Obelix" Universe while the Luitanian leader (Viriatus) was alive the romans had many defeats, even being "forced" to sign a peace treaty

Why did he omit the fact that after Ines was exhumed, her corpse was placed on the throne beside the king, and all her previous enemies and detractors among the nobility were forced to kneel and kiss her ring. Too grisly for the audience? Odd, since it seems ok to mention her assassins having thei4 hearts torn out of their living bodies.

Afterwards, the accounts of Pedro's actions mix reality with legend. Some say that the tomb was placed opposite Pedro's own grave, so that they could look into each other’s eyes on the day of the last judgment. Others go even further and say that, once in Alcobaça, Pedro had Inês placed on the throne, put the royal crown on the skull, and forced the entire court to swear allegiance to the dead Queen, by kissing the hand of the corpse. One thing is known for sure: the eighth King of Portugal was moved by strong feelings that united him to the queen of his heart and, according to the royal chronicler Fernão Lopes, he was consumed by a "great madness".

Very interesting narrative, and story about this king and queen. If I heard you correctly. The founder of Portugal was the bastard child and this queen Ines was a bastard daughter that sounds like shaky illegitimate grounds to. Found a royal lineage. Moreover, he had married I believe her sister and when she died, he married her. where did the sister get buried? Because she was a queen at one point also. And then, when she was declared a legitimate queen, did her children gain succession or did the first wife ❤ not have any children? A lot of details here that are missing. Too bad the video and it suddenly, as loose ends werent tied up.

The name Spain (Hispania) was created by the Romans, (like Britania), Portugal has the oldest borders of Europe, the Spanish language was created by the Galician-Portuguese language. The term spain is a peninsula name not a country.
@miguelcoelho38776 жыл бұрын
What is generally referred to as the "Spanish language" is, in fact, Castilian, the official language of Spain. Let's not forget, however, all the others: Catalan, Basque, Asturian/Mirandese, etc.. None of those were "created" by the Galician-Portuguese language. And let's not forget that those are, in turn, related to the languages spoken in France (Provencal, Languedoc, Auvergnat...) and that these are part of a vast family of languages called Indo-European! And you are wrong -- the term Spain refers to a country as there is no such a thing called the Spanish Peninsula!!!

@ikemoon1276 жыл бұрын
That doesn't seem right to me. The Romance languages underwent a softening of the C next to the letters , which manifested differently in different languages (e.g. in italian, the soft C is pronounced like "Ch" in English). The hard /k/ sound is much older, and used to be pronounced like that in all instances of C prior to the softening unless I'm mistaken. I'm willing to be proven wrong, but I need evidence if I'm to believe what you're saying.
@miguelcoelho38776 жыл бұрын
Do a search on the word "Celtici", and in particular on the Historical references (maps from Ptolemy, Roman, and Greek chronicles from the time of the Roman invasion of the Iberian Peninsula) and maybe, just maybe, drop the smugness disguised as sarcasm!
@ikemoon1276 жыл бұрын
The sarcasm was to hint that he was pronouncing the word wrong. I don't know what you thought I meant.
@miguelcoelho38776 жыл бұрын
Well, both pronunciations, Celtic and Keltic have been accepted as valid. However, I have never come across the word being spelled with an "S" hence my assumption that you were insinuating, by proxy, that the "Celtic" connection with Iberia is an illusion, a point which is being maintained in some circles, wanting to maintain the sole connection of the Celts with the Britsh Isles, when in fact the Celts -- a term that should refer to a culture rather than a sole ethnicity -- were quite widespread throughout most of Western Europe. In fact, the name Portugal is a reference to their presence in Iberia. Check the former name of Portugal: Portus Cale.
