Dear Portugeeza, your pronunciation may be 0ff by a mile but your grasping of the Portuguese idiosyncrasy is spot on! :) You are quite right in everything you said, I would only dispute the claim that King Sebastião was "mad"; he was ill-advised and he was betrayed, but you got the gist of it. Portugal is a conundrum, full of contradictions not easy to explain. As you said, June 10th was selected by Salazar's dictatorship to restore some pride in the "portuguese race" (the date was baptised then as "Day of the race". Camões (hard one to pronounce, something like "come oins") was the bard of the "race", so the perfect figure to embody the date. I always thought it was a bit silly to celabrate someone's dying date but that's the only recorded date, that also kind of coincided with the last days of Portugal's indepenece... But there's more. Luiz Vaz de Camões named his masterpiece "Os Lusiadas" (The Lusi(tanians) Iliad ) after the conglomerate of peoples that lived in Central Portugal (where you live) and part of Extremadura in Spain, and fought the Romans long and hard. Thus, the Lusitanians would be forebears of the Portuguese "race", but that is only partialy true. Please bear with me: The name "Portugal" comes from the Latin "Portus Cale", meaning something like the "The Port of the Land of the Caleci). Note that in Latin "c" and "g" were used interchangeably, so the Caleci or Galeci, were the people living north of the Lusitanians (above Douro River), and from the celtic root "Gal" in their name we suspect that they were related to other celtic peoples like the Gauls/Galia (modern day France) or the Welsh (Gales/Galeses, in Portuguese). Fast forward to the 12th Century, the Kigndom of Portugal is formed, leaving behinde its siamese twin, Galicia. These Northen overlords helped the first kings of Portugal to expel the moors all the way back to Africa and shaped what is today the country of Portugal, including the Portuguese language (Galician-Portuguese). So, Camões wrote a book in Galician-Portuguese , celebrating Vasco da Gama's odissey and the glory of Portugal, nothing to do with the Lusitanians, but he couldn't call his ancestors "Galicians" for obvious reasons, hence "The Lusiadas". Sorry for the long post and the gramtics, I thought you might enjoy this other side of the story.

I expected you to make a video about the EU elections. I actually went and voted. The Junta de freguesia lived down to all expectations and messed up my registration. I had to spend 20 mins there arguing with them before I got to vote. The excuse was a new computer system. Odd that it only seemed to be EU nationals and not Portuguese that were impacted. One could be forgiven for thinking that that local socialists were perhaps not keen on us voting. Perhaps I have been wearing my tinfoil hat too much, but real tenacity was required to break through their garbage and I doubt most people have the patience.

Not rulling out completely the conspiracy theory but they did decide to introduce a new digital system not yet tested on any election so there you go, the live trial caused lots of delays and affected many people, the ADN party candidate was one of them and she reported some voters just giving up. Apparently the system was overloaded and crashed often, the workaround used was rebooting until it was working again. As Portugeeza once wisely said "Portugal teaches you patience" :D
