Position sizing is a concept most traders forget to focus on. In this videos called "Position size calculator Tradingview" I'll go in depth with how to calculate the right postion size for your stocks so that you always take exactly the same risk on all positions.
I'll also show you how to have Tradingview making all the calculations automatically for you.

I’m having trouble with the long position sizing tool. I don’t trade Forex and yet the tool defaults to a “Lot Size” of 1 and shows me incorrect quantities to buy. For example, let’s say I enter: Account size 10k Risk size 2% Entry at $1.05 Stop at $1.03 The position sizing tool tells me to buy 9,756.098 QTY. That can’t be right. That’s more than my account balance. And it always does this. And there’s no way to get rid of the “Lot Size” field or set it to zero. Any solutions you can think of?

regarding stop loss....after watching many stocks come down temporarily, then move back up just as quickly, it seems silly to have a stop loss close to the buy in point. Maybe this is my uneducated view but, a stop loss is a guaranteed loss, where patients and watching the stock could actually make you money once the stock springs back. In the end, I'm thinking a stop loss in necessary for certain types of stock or certain market conditions, but not all...

It is always an act of balancing. I have tested my strategies and SL works great. No one knows where the market goes and if it goes down another 30% it can be great with SL's. But that is up to everyones own strategy.

I have seen the same issue happen with me. It seems most every time I put in what I would consider a reasonable stop loss, I get stopped out. On the other hand, that one time you guess wrong and have the bottom fall out on you to the tune of a huge loss, your probably going to wish you had a stop loss in place. You could just put in a loose stop loss to prevent any sort of crazy loss, then almost immediately move up the stop loss once things look more stable so as to keep things tight.

Hello. Can you explain please how we arrive at the 'Trade Value" at the bottom of the BUY screen? Also d oes this value equate to how much of our bankroll was achieved to take this trade? Eg. We have 100.000 and trade value is 25,000 does this mean that while this trade is open then we have 75,000 bankroll left to play with?

I mean it is default at 1, but how to change that or what exactly to put because there is already a separate popo up where we must put lot or stocks share. Thank you for your video, but please note that when talking to viewers or subscribers, the distinction between stocks and stock shares are important. There is a distinction between saying 'when I buy stocks' , 'when I sell stocks,' compared to saying "when I buy stock shares" or "when I sell stock shares". The distinction between the two clarifies the difference between stocks the asset class and shares--- the percentage of ownership (stock shares) that one has in the company of that particular-asset class". If this comment is unclear, please review it in the context of the video. Thank you

Hi Tony, If you have 100.000 usd and you must risk 1% = 1000 usd pr. trade you will max. lose. If you trade a $100 stock and have a stop loss $10 down you say $1000/$10 = 100 stocks.

Hi , I have a problem calculating the position size. Account size = 1,00,000 Risk = 1% Amount in risk = 1,000 Short : Entry = 1029 Stop loss at = 1032 The difference between the Entry and Stop loss is 3 rupeese. 1000/3 = 333.33 Now if I multiply that with the price of the stock it gives me . 333 * 1029 = 3,43,000 WHICH EXCEEDS MY TOTAL CAPITAL.. !! how is this possible and how can I calculate my position size in this case ? Please Help .

Your Stop loss is only 0,3% away which is way little. Most stocks move more in an hour. So would suggest you move your stop longer away. If it is because you are extremely short term day trading, you should only risk maybe 0,1% of your account.

So once I know how many shares of stock I can buy to stay within my selected risk level, I can then multiply the price per share times that number of shares to know how much it will cost me to take the position? In your example for e.g., $100 (price per share) * 100, or 50 (number of maximum shares purchasable) = cost, unless of course you are working with margin in which case the margin requirement would dictate the amount. Is this correct?
@BuildingFreedom
@BuildingFreedom Жыл бұрын
Yes, if for instance you have 100.000 and are willing to risk 1% of your capital per trade, then that is 1% of 100.000 = 1000 USD in risk. If you have a stock costing $100 and have a SL at 90 ($10 risk pr. stock), then the number of stocks is: $1000 (the max risk)/ 10 (risk per stock) = 100 shares. The total price is then 100 shares * $100 = $10.000 in total purchase

@@BuildingFreedom In this clip, the gentleman discusses how to grow $300 into $1000 he states over a 6 hour duration. He is trading Nas100 which at the time of recording (and coincidentally right now) was trading at a little over $13,000. Because the price per share is this high, considering the points you have helped me to understand about position sizing, am I right I’m assuming he must have been leveraging margin to take a $300 position on a $13k per share asset? Or could he have calculated the lot size he needed to trade a fractional share size that falls within his $300? To be this exact with a small account you must learn how to calculate the correct lot size to make such a trade possible no? Clip: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/eMWTea2Zr7yyqWQ.html

This doesn't make any sense?? At 9:35, you say you can buy 65 units, but 65 units x a price of 221.32 per share = $14,385.80 which is FAR more than your 1% or $1,000 that you say you want to risk. Shouldn't it be 4.51 units which is $1000 divided by $221.32 ??
@BuildingFreedom
@BuildingFreedom Жыл бұрын
Hi, then you should listen to it again. You are not risking the entire amount. There is a Stop loss and that is all you risk. If I buy a share for $100 with a SL at $90 then I risk $10 and not $100.
@MDC885
@MDC885 Жыл бұрын
@@BuildingFreedom Ok, I think it makes a little more sense, but still really confusing in a way. I still don't understand how you can buy more shares than you can afford, that's the part that doesn't make sense to me
@BuildingFreedom
@BuildingFreedom Жыл бұрын
@@MDC885 Normally you won't buy more than you can afford, but of course it's possible with leverage. But if you have 100.000 in the account and want to risk 1% per trade, that is 1.000. Then you have a stock that costs 100 and you have a stop-loss at 90. That is a $10 risk per share. If you max are willing to risk $1000 then you divide 1000 by 10 (the risk) = 100 shares. 100 shares x $100 = $10.000 (out of the $100.000). So your shares are worth $10.000 and your stop-loss is 10% away. If the SL is hit that is 10% of $10.000 = $1.000 (which is 1% of the $100.000). Makes sense?
@MDC885
@MDC885 Жыл бұрын
@@BuildingFreedom It doesn't?? Going by your example in the video. If the share price is 221.32, then that's the cost of 1 share of that stock, right? If you're only allocating $1,000 total to buy, then how can you buy more than 4.5 shares? Especially 65 shares which is $14k+ Why does the stop loss matter for the amount you're buying? I don't get that part?
@BuildingFreedom
@BuildingFreedom Жыл бұрын
@@MDC885 Let's use round numbers. 1% of 100.000 i $1000. that is my risk, not the $100.000. The stop loss defines your risk per share. So if you SL i $10 away you are risking $10 per share. If your max risk can be $1000 per trade then you say 1000(max risk)/10(risk per share) = 100 shares. Then you buy shares worth $10.000. But you are not risking $10.000 you are only risking $1000
