Tour de France

11 ай бұрын

The Tour de France 2023 will hold its Grand Départ in the Basque Country, with a first stage in Bilbao on 1st July, and will finish in Paris on 23rd July, on completion of a 3,404-km route that will tackle the difficult slopes of the country’s five mountain ranges. The battle for the Yellow Jersey will witness a decisive and emotional episode on the Puy de Dôme, where a stage finish will be held 35 years after the victory of Denmark’s Johnny Weltz. The return to this legendary climb will be accompanied by the rise in importance of sites that will mark the Tours of the future, such as the Grand Colombier or the Col de la Loze. The sole time-trial on the Tour de France in 2023 will take place over 22 kilometres between Passy and the Combloux ski resort in Haute-Savoie. The sprinters will also have the opportunity to express themselves on finishes in Bordeaux, Limoges, Moulins, before the grand finale on the Champs-Elysées.

Mohoric is Slovenian. Can we take a moment to admire his ability to express himself in English? Wow! Wins a stage of the most famous bike race in the world, and then delivers an interview like this in a foreign language. A real credit to this truly international sport.

Watching the race yesterday i wished that the danish would win the stage, since the final brake succes was entirely his work. But boy, seeing this interview changed my mind completely. How many times you see a competitor recognizing the merits of his adversaries in a race? How many times you see a winner explaining so sincerally and with compassion the efforts of all arround him? How many times you see a person that is so genuine in his/her speach because Matej was speaking with his heart? In my opinion this interview should be shown and explained to the kids, because it contains so much humanity in it. Thank you Mr Mohoric for this speech!

What a cutie, I haven’t seen a rider express so much self awareness, explaining the guilt using someone else’s wheel and beating them to the line (even though it’s part of the sport and fair play!). He’s very humble and recognizes everyone who works on the team as well as his fellow riders. What a great interview and great ride he did!

I did not expect to get emotionally moved to the point of crying while watching today's post-race interview of Matej Mohorič, winner of stage 19 of Le Tour de France. My emotions caught me off guard. I had to re-watch this interview a couple times to figure out why it hit me so hard in the feels... It's not simply because he was emotional himself. Lots of TdF stage winners cry tears of joy, because their longtime dream comes true at a moment when they're physically & emotionally exhausted. Crying winners are very common in the 3 big grand tours. I think what really makes this interview different, and what got me choked up, is the pure, unrehearsed EMPATHY and RESPECT he feels for ALL his competitors. It's beautiful. And rare. The 3 grand tours of cycling, especially the Tour de France, are the most difficult, grueling athletic competitions in the world. You have to push yourself to the limits of human endurance for apx 5 hours a day, every day, for over 3 weeks straight. It's like running an ultra-marathon every day for a month. And it's extremely dangerous- crashes happen every stage. Many riders have died. In fact, one of Mohorič's closest teammates, Gino Mäder, died just last month in the Tour of Switzerland (that's the "Gino" they're referencing). But I don't think Mohorič is crying over Gino, or himself... he's crying because he feels guilty for winning when EVERYBODY who has made it this far- 3 weeks into the Tour - and survived... they ALL deserve to win. He's like a soldier looking across the battlefield at his enemy, and seeing that they're no different from himself. He doesn't want to shoot his enemy, because everyone with the courage to fight a war this intense deserves the victory. He's not crying tears of joy for himself, because he beat his competitors. He's crying tears of empathy for his competitors, because he beat them. Chapeau to you Matej Mohorič ❤ #RideForGino

Post race interviews are one of the best parts of the tour. It means so much to them all, whether young first stage winners, domestiques who spend most of their career helping others then having their day in the limelight, or riders nearing the end of their career. This tour has had them all, emotions on show and expressing the grit and determination required to win and the appreciation of the effort of their team and the others in the race. But this was the most articulate, and poignant interview of them all. Matej represents all that I love about this sport.
