Don't Be a Sucker! is a short educational film produced by the U.S. War Department in 1943 and re-released in 1947. The film depicts the rise of Nazism in Germany and warns Americans against repeating the mistakes of intolerance made in Nazi Germany. It emphasizes that Americans will lose their country if they let themselves be turned into "suckers" by the forces of fanaticism and hatred. The film was made to make the case for the desegregation of the United States armed forces by simply revealing the connection between prejudice and fascism.
This film is not propaganda. To the contrary, it teaches how to recognize and reject propaganda, as was used by the Nazis to promote to bigotry and intimidation. It shows how prejudice can be used to divide the population to gain power. Far more significantly, it then shows how such tactics can be defanged by friendly persuasion; that protection of liberty is a unifying and practical way to live peacefully.
Plot:
A young American Free Mason is taken in by the message of a soap-box orator who asserts that all good jobs in the United States are being taken by the so-called minorities, domestic and foreign. He falls into a conversation with Hungarian professor who witnessed the rise of Nazism in Berlin and who tells him of the pattern of events that brought Hitler to power in Germany and how Germany's anti-democratic groups split the country into helpless minorities, each hating the other. The professor concludes by pointing out that America is composed of many minorities, but all are united as Americans.
HISTORICAL BACKGROUND / CONTEXT
Nazi Germany is the common English name for the period in German history from 1933 to 1945, when Germany was governed by a dictatorship under the control of Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party (NSDAP). Under Hitler's rule, Germany was transformed into a fascist state in which the Nazi Party took totalitarian control over nearly all aspects of life. The official name of the state was Deutsches Reich from 1933 to 1943 and Großdeutsches Reich ("Greater German Reich") from 1943 to 1945. The period is also known under the names the Third Reich (German: Drittes Reich) and the National Socialist Period (German: Zeit des Nationalsozialismus, abbreviated as NS-Zeit). The Nazi regime came to an end after the Allied Powers defeated Germany in May 1945, ending World War 2 in Europe.
Hitler was appointed Chancellor of Germany by the President of the Weimar Republic Paul von Hindenburg on 30 January 1933. The Nazi Party then began to eliminate all political opposition and consolidate its power. Hindenburg died on 2 August 1934, and Hitler became dictator of Germany by merging the powers and offices of the Chancellery and Presidency. A national referendum held 19 August 1934 confirmed Hitler as sole Führer (leader) of Germany. All power was centralized in Hitler's person, and his word became above all laws.
Racism, especially antisemitism, was a central feature of the regime. The Germanic peoples (the Nordic race) were considered by the Nazis to be the purest branch of the Aryan race, and were therefore viewed as the master race. Millions of Jews and other peoples deemed undesirable by the state were murdered in the Holocaust. Opposition to Hitler's rule was ruthlessly suppressed. Members of the liberal, socialist, and communist opposition were killed, imprisoned, or exiled. The Christian churches were also oppressed, with many leaders imprisoned. Education focused on racial biology, population policy, and fitness for military service. Career and educational opportunities for women were curtailed. Propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels made effective use of film, mass rallies, and Hitler's hypnotizing oratory to control public opinion. The government controlled artistic expression, promoting specific art forms and banning or discouraging others.
Following the Allied invasion of Normandy (6 June, 1944), Germany was conquered by the Soviet Union from the east and the other Allied powers from the west and capitulated within a year. The victorious Allies initiated a policy of denazification and put many of the surviving Nazi leadership on trial for war crimes at the Nuremberg trials.

Actually we are. We prefer to be around our own people, and this whole "American experiment" has failed long ago. It's crumbling as we speak, because white people are bludgeoned over the head from birth to have out group preference, while everyone else is told to have in group preference. time for some paradigm breaking revelations - the history of eurocentric culture is just different parts of europe doing the same general things. consolidating wealth, enslaving the world, pretending they own the world and feeling entitled to any wealth anyone else might be able to generate. the excuses they give themselves to justify these behaviors are nearly identical too. just replace the name of the country and their past will be filled with little more than copious slaughter and unnecessary suffering. turns out, when you let psychopaths direct society, it turns into a bloodlust murderfest. every single time. because they will go to any length to protect their stolen, undue power.

Sad thing is, this still holds true today. If a struggle of people doesn't affect me, then I don't care and don't concern myself with it. Only when they come for me, I start to speak out. People then get a sense of, well, if you don't help to fix the problem, then you must be by default part of the problem. It's easy then to look at others as the "enemy". It's a sad thing to witness.

@@dreameater9247 Is it really a good message though or good fantasy? Have you looked at the state of your country? The guy yelling with the pamphlet was right. It’s not even America anymore, it’s not even the west. The idea of America being a “melting pot” was never even introduced until after WWII ended and society has slowly started to fall ever since. And gee I wonder who has been pushing a one world agenda for hundreds of years, it couldn’t have been the poor people we let out of camps who happened to also be in all of the Allies political structure during the war and that currently have more representation in our government and American elites than they did in Russia during Stalins Soviet era. I’m not trying to degrade you or insult you, but seriously wake up. Read more. Think outside of the box about why the Western Hemisphere is in shambles. The fingers all point back to one people. The same people who own Blackrock, Vangard, and everything that you know and love from the media you’ve enjoyed, the products you’ve consumed, and more than likely the people you’ve looked up to. They have always been implementing the ideas of the current downfall into our minds, they’ve just dumbed everyone down enough to do it more openly now and sold it to the people as being “progressive”. Remember Weimar? Or are you unaware of what was being orchestrated in Weimar by the “chosen people”. The world is not sunshine and flowers. Some realities are harsh, and one of those harsh realities is that maybe we have been lied to for a long time and are currently being lied to.

Guys this is literally government propaganda from the 40s designed to make the public think a certain way and you’re internalizing it. Racial awareness is not taught; it’s learned. Often through experience. Like after the tenth time you’re beaten in the streets by a black or Mexican gang you learn that the 40s propaganda was a lie.
@k1ng401
@k1ng401 3 жыл бұрын
@@peachnehi8683 A person who experienced that should be anti-gang or anti-crime. Instead, that normal hatred of injustice has been twisted in some to becoming anti-black and anti-Mexican even though most blacks and Mexicans are innocent of those crimes, just as most whites are. The race of a perp has become this person’s focus instead of the perp’s character. Instead of “I hate criminals who beat me up” he thinks “I hate blacks, I hate Mexicans”. It’s a gut reaction, a trick of the brain to protect him by putting the biggest wall possible between him and the danger. If, his brain says, “all blacks or all Mexicans are dangerous”, it’s easier to put his walls up to protect himself. He doesn’t have to get close enough to a person to work out their CHARACTER and know if they are dangerous, he can see their colour or race from a distance and take steps. All racism is derived from fear and the brain’s attempt to deal with that fear in the simplest most complete way possible: A black man hurt you? Avoid all black men from now on. Try to reduce their power to hurt you in the future by suppressing them or expelling them. All of them, because you don’t know who the bad ones are. That’s how the racist brain thinks. It’s simple and effective, if you have the power. Which the Nazi’s did.

I wrote a paper in highschool, early 2000s, about how Hitler and Mussolini subverted their governments to take power. I closed the essay out with a paragraph about it makes one think how we could lose our democracy in America. My teacher wrote underneath, "That can never happen in America, we have checks and balances!" with a smiley face. One side causes chaos and occasionally censors thing, one tries to bring too much order, we got the parties going for the most extremes rather then trying to find something that works for most people. Imagine how disappointed people in the 40's would be if they realized that there were people dumb enough in 2023 to watch this schlocky and banal 1943 war propaganda film made by Warner Brothers, which was written by an actual communist (who 10 years later was brought up on charges by House un-American committee's), and think that it was "needed". You know what other propaganda film Warmer Brothers made that same year in 1943? Mission To Moscow. I'll save you the time of laying out the plot (you can watch it since you're so enamored with pro-Marxist, anti-Christian propaganda), but its main points were pointing out what a great man and leader Josef Stalin was, and how happy people were in the Soviet Union under communism. Meanwhile, also in 1943, the Germans found the mass graves of over 20,000 Poles who were executed in mass graves, killed by the barbaric Soviet NKVD. Your own government knew the truth, and still lied to you and blamed the deaths on the Germans, all while producing pro Soviet films from Warner Brothers. It took 50 years for the US govt to admit the truth that it wasn't the Germans, which is still less time than it took to learn the lies about illegally arming the civilian passenger ship Lusitania.

@@HeathWatts I don't see how capitalism benefits from fascism. The only corporations that benefit are the ones that the government nationalizes in the name of the country/ethnicity/race. Any seemingly successful business is run out/given to a member of the fascist regime. In Nazi Germany, any successful business run by a jewish person would either be shut down or run into the ground by a german who has no idea how to run that business. I can see how some of the right benefit from fascism, being that fascism is right wing, but it wouldn't benefit any right winger who isn't fascist. Any libertarian capitalist who doesn't want the government to run his business is screwed. And, of course, any rich people who aren't part of the regime will have their wealth taken away. So only certain rich people benefit. To clarify, I hate fascism. I am not defending it. But I am a right winger, in the sense that I am a libertarian capitalist type. 11:39 "We must judge each man as an individual..." One of the most important things from this video. Unfortunately today we are so caught up in group-think and that's so dangerous. Assigning blame and prejudices to an entire group of people because they may fall into certain categories. We define ourselves by our character and actions--and we should evaluate each other based on that instead of blind, knee-jerk reactions based on one of various boxes a person may fall into.

The ending monologue at 15:27 is *chef's kiss* Perfect way to end this knowledgable video. People talk about 'minorities' as if they're not a part of one, but literally _EVERYONE_ is a minority in one way or another-it doesn't have to be in race, sex, origin or religion. A threat to any minority spreads as a threat to _all_ of them. Just like MLK said: _"Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere."_

Even in this film, we see that it only takes 30 seconds for the man to fire up, disillusion, and trick the crowd into racism and false information. Yet it took a whole 16 minutes for the film to provide the truth and better judgement. Truly shows that “A Lie Can Travel Halfway Around the World Before the Truth Puts On its Shoes” -Mark Twain. If that man never got up to yell and go on the old man would have never been able to give the younger man a warning. The man yelling would still have found a way to spread his opinions in dark corners. Its why freedom of speech and discussion is so so important. As it lets history of past mistakes come to light. Who have we become? Have we learned nothing in the last 76 years. I cried watching this because my father was the son of a poor Italian immigrant and he fought in the Normandy invasion. A war so horrible that it was said those atrocities could never again happen. But here we are. We have become those deluded people we fought against in the name of freedom and liberty. We must find it in our hearts to love one another and have compassion for those who struggle to simply be recognized and heard as equal and not less. And who are trapped in poverty by an unfair and divisive system. Our great country too can fall if we choose to avoid speaking out against inequity and hatred and place blame rather than take responsibility for being part of a more important whole than ourselves. Our future and our children's future literally depend on us finding love in our hearts for each other, our neighbors, and our beautiful planet. Peace, Love and Blessings to all.

They use you until they come for you. Fascism always has to have a domestic enemy in order for it to work, some group, or groups, to divide and conquer. If they take from the initial target groups and run them off, kill them, imprison them, then they must have someone else to 'deal with' to turn the suckers against until it is their turn. The only way it is ever able to work in the first place is for there to be enough people willing to sacrifice someone else in their desire to have more for themselves, right along with enough people it doesn't matter to. You are left with people who are willing to do that to you either through greed or fear, depending upon where they fit in the scheme of things.

When I was in elementary school we saw films like this. I've heard a few things about what our children are being taught in our schools today, and it's not what the professor in the film who was arrested was teaching.
