I hope Sonny can make the striker role his own for the next 5 years. I think sometimes his selflessness is a hurdle, however. The best strikers have a certain cockiness and looks for their own goals more. Also, I hope he starts having more long attempts at goal. That is one of his strengths. Not sure if he is being told not to. No one better than Sonny when he delivers a full bloodied strike from outside the penalty box. He is clinically on target. And even if the goalkeeper manages to block, never know where the ball will rebound. Also I loved Dragusin’s runs out of the back. Really opens up everything.

Totally agree with everything you said about our skipper, Sonny. He is the perfect fit for that role. He sets himself extremely high standards and seems to say and do the right things where the other members of the team/squad are concerned. Sonny is incredibly humble and yet enormously competitive … I loved his response to the Club journos on the Review Show, where he apologised to them and the fans for leaving things so late to provide the winner against Luton! Thanks Alasdair - I took my grandson to his first Spurs match yesterday thinking that at least this would be an easier match to watch. He loved that Sonny scored the winner so all good. Luton did what other teams have learnt to do, man mark us rigidly as we play out from the back. Ange and team need a better solution to this as we struggled (especially v Brighton). Overall though we thoroughly deserved the points.

People are talking about Werner's miss, completely ignoring the fact that he did brilliantly to create the chance in the first place. Who else in the team can run at pace and completely take the defender out of the game like he did? The guy is electric. He's not a great finisher, but it's 15m. And he's the best dribbler on the team. I really don't understand.

I think its a bit of a fallacy to think that we'd be better with Kane - I don't doubt that Kane would've scored goals, but we wouldn't be able to play the same way we have been playing if we still had Kane. Look at how good Son is at pressing, his ability to sprint over and over again and the pace he can press at. Kane can't do that. Also how many players have stepped up and developed with the added responsibility this season in Kane's absence. I felt for the last few seasons that our over-reliance on Kane took up space for the rest of the squad to grow into.

Since Mourinho and Kane's ankle injuries, he has been coached to not press, to save himself, save injuries, make sure he is only playing in possession and always in space to receive a pass. Kane is reported as an extremely fit footballer, 'works harder than anyone' gets said etc... He obviously can't press like Son can, but I think for Kane, pressing was a strength he had, that has been coached out of his game, it's painful to watch him jog about out of possession, it seems like it frustrates Sané and co too

We should be challenging anyway. The defeats to Wolves, West Ham, Fulham were avoidable as was the draw at Everton. We really should have 7-8 more points, which would have us in the mix.

Brennan was wonderful and bright out there and you can see the great player he can become. But I think, again, folks are massively underrating all the work that Kulusevski does when he’s out there. Hold up play, defensive work, and his relentless work and physciality. Why does Johnson have so much more impact as a super sub and isn’t as effective in his starts? I submit it’s the defense wearing themselves out on Deki first and then having to deal with Johnson’s speed on tired legs (and everything else) and simply replacing Deki will result in us missing his work. Wonder if we can find a way to work Kulusevski into the midfield from the start more and try to get the best of both worlds.

Thanks, Ali. Brennan is more effective on the right due to being right footed. Deiki needs to work on his weak foot to the point where it’s muscle memory so he can do what Ange wants. Tottenham’s history is covered with ‘if only’ moments, if only John White hadn’t passed away, would we have won more leagues in the mid sixties? If only Chris Waddle hadn’t left in the late 80’s could have we challenged for the league? If only we could have kept Modric and Bale for the Poch’s years, could we have won the league (if we could have still afforded Eriksen without Bale’s money) And now with Kane, as i agree with you as it’s another if only/what if moment. PS - was the goal line incident you were referring to in regards to the Man City Liverpool game from a couple of years ago, when John Stones managed to clear it off the line, preventing Liverpool to winning the title and going the season undefeated?

A few points on the game if I may: (a) The TV commentator said that James headed straight down the tunnel after being taken off. Any insights on this or am I reading too much into it? (b) Giovani's movement was important for the winning goal. He draw a defender who was close to Heung Min which gave him the space for the shot. (c) To be fair, apart from our players' mistakes, Luton's goal was a good one. Andros' run, Rosamund Barkley's pass and Tahith Chong's finish were all good. (d) Not a big fan of movies but I will give your new channel a go. Love the Back to the Future t-shirt! One of my favourite moves of all time. I do wonder on Deki if Ange doesn't want him cutting in why doesn't he play him on the left?? Seems the obvious solution. Think Deki's overall quality is better than Werner so seems like we're missing an opportunity. Bentancur seemed to look more back to his best, retains the ball well.

Touchline winger is just not Kulusevki's ideal position, Deki's a class act but it's a square peg in a round hole. I'm a big admirer of Atalanta which is where he was developed and I can see that his qualities suit the #10 role in that system, where there's always a wingback or even centre-half overlapping and he has to wriggle and make things happen in the tight spaces in the pocket.

I know it's not their positions but thoughts on swapping Porro and Kulusevski? Porro's strength is his crossing, while Kulusevski likes cutting inside. With Postecoglou the fullbacks end up as basically inside forwards which is what Kulusevski is best at, while Porro can stretch the play and fire in crosses. Defensively may be a challenge for Deki, however he has the physical tools to make it work
@darthrevan6861
@darthrevan6861 2 ай бұрын
Porro can cross but we don't have any players in the attacking third who are good in the air, that's the problem. Even he barely crosses (only if Romero or somebody joins the attack), he just tries through balls or when we're counter attacking sometimes he does his crazy 50-yard passes which works for Son who's running behind the defense, but he barely puts high balls in the box, especially from the wing. Under Conte Deki ALWAYS did that cut in-and-cross thing but we had Kane. Now under Ange he NEVER does it. For me it even feels that Ange specifically told the players they can't cross. Best would be either to buy a top winger (Deki just can't play the Ange way, I'm sorry), or a striker who's good at the air too (Richarlison is good in the air, but the problem is that he's mediocre in EVERYTHING else...) and put Son on the wings.

Thanks Alasdair. Am sure you must have mentioned this before, but why does Ange play Kulesevski on the right hand side rather than the left? After the problems against Luton I feel that Johnson and Werner should start against West Ham and then Deki could come off the bench at some stage. Perhaps Hojbjerg instead of Bissouma to give extra steel in the midfield. Son is great but Spurs need to plan ahead and should be looking to bring in a striker in the summer rather than a centre back. Someone who can be groomed to take over from Son in the future. I am not sure that Richarlison is a long term answer.

Spurs played well. However, two remarks: First Romero and Vicario have to stop the lazy starts and speed up the passes forward. Second two or more times there was a Luton player obstructing Porro when the ball was being passed between the Luton forwards. The goal came from the first try. I think this was a thought out tactical move. You can notice many teams are using the tactic of one player harrasing the keeper or the defender under pressure to allow another player to be free and do what he has to do unhampered.

Ange might hate predictability but the way his team is currently playing is awfully predictable to me - with the lack of urgency in first halves, the constant back and side passing, inability to break down solid defensive structures and lack of quality to finish chances. It’s the same disappointing feeling I had when watching near the end of mourinho’s and conte’s tenures, and very unlike how I felt the first half of this season, regardless of the results of matches. I just hope things turn around when ange has another summer with this squad, hopefully with some much needed additions.

Dude we had like a 26 game scoring-streak in the Premier League with him lmao. We struggle a lot but we always score goals, that's not the problem. I do think we're predictable but I watch quite a few City games and they don't play much "better". One thing they do much more often that once they fail to create clear-cut chances they start to shoot from sight or they just start to put killer balls in and maybe sometimes the ball will bounce in a good way.They also struggle a lot, but what've been missing from the Spurs team is the automatisms, the one-two-s, that kind of attacks which you can normally see like 3 or 4 times in City or Liverpool games only as well, you know, those fast paced passing-sequences, or those through balls behind the defence, that you can see that it has been practiced 10000 times in training just do it once in the game. I don't see Spurs do much that, all our players have a very definitive role but still every time we are in front of the goal it seems like there's no idea how to score and we just try to do ad-hoc things. But still, we always manage to score, the problem is our defensive structure which is painfully bad. Our midfield is basically non-existent every single time, and our full-backs had to run back from 30-40 yards behind the attacker. The thing Arsenal or City does better is that they just have much more "presence" in the midfield. Their defense is also vulnerable but they can always manage to get the ball quick enough and the opponent can't even start counter-attacks. When they start to run at you at 3 v 2 or 4 v 3 you're already lost.

I swear we have had 1 good performance which was vs Villa in the last 3 months. Really underwhelmed by these recent performances, no goals in 10 first half games is a disgrace. Not Ange out, but this has to imprive dramatically.

We weren't good vs Villa, they didn't turn up. They made us look good. We sort out our wingers in the summer then we're gona be a problem

I really like Deki but I’ve also come to the conclusion that he just doesn’t fit the right wing position for Ange. I’d play him in the midfield as competition for Maddison . Personally I’d sell lo Celso play Deki as a 10 or a false 9 ! Just don’t want him on the right anymore . It doesn’t work

Hey Alasdair, ask Ange about the halftime boos and guarantee he says “I can’t tell fans how they should feel”😂 Enjoy your work.

Kulu was not only responsible for their goal break but also why Pedro is reluctant to push forward until Kulu is subbed, he only ever jogs back and is no back up to Pedro at the back when needed, the stats might show him creating but the eye and lack of goals and assists tells us all we need to know. Brennon has so much more to his game and has two feet that he can use. Werner is far better when Brennon is supplying and Ange has said it’s what they work on so much. Kulu needs to start learning how to use his right foot esp playing the right wing

The easiest way to look at the Kane issue is to just add 25 goals to our season. I think that tells you where we might have been and if not quite yet with another good window and support from the board especially as the revenues and financials are so good. We would have a great chance of challenging on all fronts next season. I don’t suppose Harry ever envisaged Tottenham possibly qualifying for the UCL but then he deserves his opportunities elsewhere if he wishes. I’d love Bayern to win the UCL but I can’t honestly see it. Thanks Ali always great to hear your views and opinions

What AG forgets is the £100m for kane paid for the likes of maddison, vdv and johnson. If kane had stayed then some/all of those players would not be here. The other thing to remember is kane wanted £500k p/w above all else. Spurs would not have paid that, so there isn't a reasonable case that kane would have signed another deal - he was leaving one way or another.

Kanes deal very nearly didn't get through and those players were already signed. Maddison, kane and son would have been incredible

Kuluseski was atrocious yesterday and should have been hooked at 20 minutes. Johnson deserves to start instead of him on Tuesday

He was nowhere near atrocious. Created 2 big chances after his mistake. If anyone we should be concerned as to why Maddison isn't getting back to form yet

‘Atrocious’ is severely over the top. We have many players no way near their career peak yet. Let’s just back them all 100%

So no goals in first half for yonks? Could it be we need a 20 goal plus CF?

I really can’t see a world where we don’t sign Werner ! Regardless of what you think of him it’s so cheap and you could sell him next day for double the money. He’s a good character and contributes more than enough . It’s a project and we’ll need players like him during rebuild and it’s another way to make money in this new PSR situation.

Everyone is saying we need focus on winger and midfielder in summer. I really think we need a better back up to Porro and Udogie. Maybe one signing and maybe give spence a shot if he’s landed back on planet earth

As always Ali thanks for the video, I am not having a go at Deki but I don’t believe he works as a right sided winger in Ange ball as you have mentioned. I know you bring up stats that say he make more chances than anyone else, but that can be misleading in away. If a winger sends 6 balls across the box where another play can run on to it and score he made 6 chances, if another winger sends 10 in but there maybe just a little behind the player where he has to come back a little to get it the stats are not really showing the true picture. I think Deki would be better suited either on the left or in the Maddison role, he’s a good player but I don’t think he is suited as a right winger.

Agreed on OG assist stats. Do you think the game has gone overboard with stats, almost NFL like, also phrases like ‘turnover’.

I think the only goal-line tech moment I've seen as close as that, was the Japan vs Spain one in the last World Cup. Not sure if that's the one you were thinking of, but that was even closer from what I remember.

One thing during the game is that the "ball boys/girls" are not anymore allowed pitch side passing the balls back to the players. Thought it slowed down the game, I get the idea about fairness, for example time wasting, although that can go both ways, but home advantage.

It’s a weird one either way Kane as could def see how valuable he’d be on certain matches this season and berm the difference - but I’d presume he’d have been made captain and don’t think he’d have pulled the club and players all together in the way Son has
