Postwar Lionel Passenger Trains - featuring a few 2021 Fall York Show additions

It’s been a few weeks since the York Show and with a few tweaks and some cleaning three Postwar passenger trains finally got some layout time.
I found a nice 2628 Manhattan Pullman to complete my version of the 1949 2146WS Lionel set. The new-to-me 2500 cars look great behind the F3s or the 2046 Hudson, and the 2025 (now cleaned and running great!) is perfect for the Tinplate 6440 cars,

Man this takes me back ... Hope this layout goes to someone who will appreciate t when your time on earth ends. Mine s soon so no more layouts getting built. Time to let it all go and toy trains has been a positive and enjoyable part 〽️ of this world experience.

I love your layout. I could watch videos of trains driving on it all day. Your postwar Lionel trains are fantastic too. You have to love those air whistles. Thank you so much for sharing. Thumbs up.

Out of them all on KZfaq, you have the nicest layout in terms of practical some of these guys build these big monster boards... It would have been nice to see what your board looks like with 2 trains running at the same time

Thanks Jimmy. The reversing loops and crossings make it very challenging to run two trains. Those also are what make it an interesting layout to run trains on.

@@JohnETrains it appears to me you just need to make that one section of track that crosses everything to dip under two bridges, you'd just need to cut a hole somewhere and modify things..... should be easy to do. seeing you built a nice board like that.

That’s a great layout and I thoroughly enjoyed seeing it in action. However, I have what might be an unusual question. In general, when I view the various model train videos, they are usually going at what I consider to be breakneck speed and might even derail. In real life the passengers would have to wear safety belts around those hairpin turns! I’m baffled because it doesn’t seem natural and also makes it difficult to see the details on the trains as they wiz by. Why are they at such high speed?

Sean, the layout is based on a track plan featured in CTT March 1994. I used two 6x8 tables instead of the 4x8s in the article. This allowed me to add two more sidings.

I’ve asked CTT if I could publish the track plan and they declined. You can access the issue and see the plan if you subscribe to their digital library. It is a great resource, especially the issues in the 1990s IMO.

It was on the original track plan - based on one in CTT March 1997. I expanded, using two 6’x8’ tables in an L shape making the table 8x14. I then added a 2x4 addition for sidings on the inside of the L. The control panel is between that table and the 8’ leg of the L.

Thanks! I have vinyl ties from 3-r-plastics under the tracks. The ceiling is tiled and that may help also.

It was originally two 4’x8’ tables in an L configuration. This version I used two 6’x8’ tables. This allowed me to add sidings to keep three trains on the layout.

Dan, Glad you like the layout. The original track plan is shown in Classic Toy Trains Magazine March 1994. I added five sidings for accessories and train storage between runs. I asked to republish the plan but CTT has a copyright that I need to honor. The issue can be downloaded digitally from their website.
