I have the same deformity issue with mine. It definitely is the heat. I had operated in the direct sunlight for about 4 hours. It was a 96 degree day with a heat index of 102. I used some PVC sealant and electrical tape to bring it back together.

He's just switched to a different white plastic since I put this video out. He tells me it resists the heat much better and is going to send me one to test.

The trick with the figure 8 winding. We did that with teletype tape in the Air Force. I use it all the time with cords and wires.

Nice activation. I like to think of QRP as an excuse to pack light so you can hike out to the nice quiet spots and take in the scenery while you operate.

and there was a time where Mike didn't like to operate with the IC-705 because he couldn't activate a park with it. Now the IC-705 holds his personal fastest time to activate from the first contact to the 10th contact. Funny how that works.

Yeah yeah yeah! I never said I didn't like operating the 705. I always maintained that it was the parks fault. It just took me sneaking into the park from the other side to make it work. Texas state parks had no idea I was there, thus they couldn't turn the bands off :)

The 49:1 transformer needs a little upgrade. That's surprising with only 10W but another toroid and heavier wire for the 2/14 winding will solve the overheating issue.

It's not a problem with the toroid, it's the plastic. He just started making them out of a different type of plastic since this video and they aren't deforming. He's going to send me one to test.

Nice activation, I used their normal power version for quite a while at the QTH. Curious to know the effects on the antenna if the transformer is raised into the tree vs the other end of the line and the transformer is down on the ground. Careful you will show your age with the goonies reference. I also have the same throwbag but I bought the foldable "square" bag..

Thanks Dewayne. That was actually the first one I bought, then he send me this one to try out. I really don't know what effect a raised transformer has. I just started doing it this way when I got the arborist throw bag a few weeks ago. It's a lot easier to setup vs. putting up a mast and deploying as an inverted V like I usually do with my PackTenna. I did make it with the transformer closer to the ground and it doesn't seem to matter SWR wise.

@@hamradiotube I grew up in that area and can verify that. The most dangerous are the two legged varmits. Having a CCL is highly recommended, especially when alone in the woods.

Just started watching your videos and was wondering what bands you are most successful on and is there any particular frequency that you normally use? It seems like as soon as you start calling CQ you get a pile up which is great, although I know you can self spot which is also a big help. I have been using a fishing pole to get a line up in a tree, but I really like your throw bag! Great job. Good luck. N3EDO.

Thanks for watching William. I'm usually on either 20 or 40 meters. I stay in the General portion of the band just because everyone can work me that way. As far as frequency there is no one freq that we use. Just find a clear one and start calling CQ.

Great video. Not impressed with the unun housing. It was on my list to buy. Having 2nd thoughts. Hope they improve the housing for summer in the sun operations. I would suggest using a lighter color box to help reflect the sun

He has already discontinued this model and is making it out of a different material for the housing. He just emailed me yesterday about it and is going to send me one to test out. It's being made with a white plastic now. When I get it I'll put it through the K8MRD torcher test and do a follow up video.

You have made a great purchase. You don’t typically need to use a counterpoise with EFHW antennas, therefore I don’t use one. So long as your coax is longer than about 20’ or so, the shield actually acts as the counterpoise.

No, I actually just started doing that once i got the arborist throw bag. I usually ran an inverted v with my EFHW's with a mast. Took a lot more time to set up. This is nice and easy.
