Back in June I did a video on the benefits of pruning potato blossoms. After an overwhelming response and suggestions, I decided to do a test batch of Russet Potatoes. I had 8 plants, half I pruned the blossoms, the other half I didn't. How did it affect my potato yield this year? Check out the video to find out.

Interesting experiment. I've never pruned my potatoes. This gives me something to think about. Thanks!

Good update. I've never pruned mine. There were hit and misses in my garden this year, but my grow bag potato results were outstanding. Don't have a total weight, as I grabbed new potatoes for meals here and there until the bigger harvest. Looking forward to your next year potato test.

Thats awesome that you had good success with your grow bags. I tried that last year, but they didn't do very well, but I think the bags were too small (7 gallon). I had blue potatoes this year that did really well and one random red potato that popped up in one of my raised beds that had 9 lbs by itself. So even though these russets didn't do as good as I hoped, I still got a decent amount of taters.

I use 10 gal bags. Had ten potato bags this year. Next year I'm planting peppers in 5 gal bags and saving the 10's for potatoes. @@oneseedoneworld

I've heard of stomping peanut plants but not potatoes. Interesting. I have heard of removing blooms but my family usually just does what we feel like. We don't go through the field and remove them all. If we're in the field sometimes we pinch off the ones by us, most time we don't. We never compare. I have true potato seeds to try. It's a new adventure. I also saw a video where a guy compared planting whole potatoes to planting cut potatoes. The yield was very similar in weight. However, since you have more planted when you cut the potatoes, you get more with the cut ones. I'd like to see that experiment repeated to see if the outcome is reproducible or if it was a fluke. I'm thinking it's probably a reproducible result. This was good to see and I'll be glad to see the results of next year's trial.

I have done both cut and whole potatoes over the years, but never noticed much of a difference in volume per plant.

We had over 100’ of potatoes destroyed by moles and voles. 😢 I just got some planting bags. We didn’t prune them.

Oh man that is awful! I haven't had much problem with those types of pests so far (in the garden). I think next year I am going to plant all my potatoes in a raised bed.

Since you did not get any berries, is that due to no pollination. What insect helps in pollination?

Its a mix of both weather and pollination. Generally, when the potatoes flower, the flowers only each last a few days and then drop off, especially during the hot and drier times of mid to late summer. While the plant may continue to flower, the individual blossoms aren't there long enough to get pollinated. However, if you have cooler weather with more rain, the blossoms are more likely to last longer and get pollinated which then will turn into berries. I have most often seen carpenter bees on my blossoms, but I'm sure many other pollinators would do the same job.
