Arguably the most photographed hike in the San Diego area, Potato Chip Rock gives hikers amazing panoramic views and the chance to stand on a rock that seems to defy gravity. Every year, tens of thousands of people visit this oddly shaped rock that resembles a potato chip from the side, hence the name. Whether it is to face your fear or just to update your profile pic on Facebook or Instagram, one thing is for sure, this hike is definitely worth getting up early for.

Just curious, why not go on the trail in Ramona instead? I grew up going to my grandma’s house in Ramona and she would always remind me that there was a rock called “potato chip rock” on Mount Woodson. I never did see it but I’m going out to California next week and I have that location in my mind. Seems like that would be shorter than this but not sure about “easier”.

The Ramona route is indeed shorter, but not as pretty. It's mostly up an asphalt road. The Poway Lake route, which is the one we featured here, is longer, but it's a lot more beautiful. We also love that it's more challenging. So, it's up to you. If you just want a short route to get to the rock, go through Ramona. If you prefer the scenic route but more work before getting to the rock, go via Poway Lake.

Are there hydration stations throughout the trail?

Unfortunately there aren't. It is really important to bring enough water. Lots of people get caught off guard out there every year.

I’d argue that statement. I lived in SanDiego for 25 years and adventured all over the place a trail junkie. I never heard of this “rock”. Nice hike but there are more “ iconic “ hikes in SD.

I guess that is a matter of opinion. It is a really fun hike though. You should check it out sometime. Maybe you will like it!
