If you can't dodge it, ram it and if you can't ram it, winch it. The driver is not from Texas for everyone who keeps saying he is like it's meant to be an insult. He's from Wisconsin.

To all, that was me and my truck. Addressing comments and questions. 2012 Ram 3500 Laramie Longhorn Mega cab built in September 2011, received November. MSRP was $60,000. Bought new for $52,500. Immediately added 2 step bigger tires, winch bumper with 12000# Ramsey winch(truck weighs >9500#), fabricated skid plate made with 2x1/2" bar stock. The truck has no low hanging parts. The bumper does not reduce approach angle but does weigh front down by about 1/4". The only damage was a groove along the exhaust system that was only cosmetic. Still in place today. On a Ram both drive shafts are out of reach of most protrusions. The only vulnerable part is the plastic fuel tank but doesn't protrude below the frame rail. Never been seriously touched. Yes I reduced the resale value. No I don't care. Plan on keeping it till my ticket gets punched. I'm 70 right now. We've run almost every trail in Colorado in the last 15 years through 2017. Can't breath at altitude since my Covid experience(almost died). Obviously the Ram can't run Black Bear due to length. I've only used the winch 4 times in that length of time. I am an engineer, auto and aircraft mechanic, Bass guitar player and singer, off-road enthusiast, welder, hydraulics technician and more. I decided to climb it because I didn't know any way around the wall and we wanted to run the entire trail. I asked the dozen or so people if I should attempt it and most gave me a thumbs up(probably wanted to see if I'd do it). That same front bar several people criticized was what got me up(its a winch mount). Yes you probably wouldn't buy my truck but I would. It's been tested tough and is not any worse for the wear. Besides I wouldn't sell it anyway. The leather heated and cooled seats, rear heated seats, back seat DVR, Uconnect, amazing audio and 600 lbft of torque is awesome. Happy trails.

*It's called off roading for a reason and no one ever expects to come back with one less scratch than the came with. You didn't have $2K tow bill and you didn't have a catastrophic failure so I'm calling this a win. $800 mods and you'd make it up that trail but you'd lose 3mpg on the highway.*

Update: the truck was totaled a month ago after hitting something large and heavy on the freeway at 75 mph. 187000 miles. Buy back was $9300. Settlement was $29000. Buy back was too high for me to save any money fixing it. 😮💨

Your off road vehicle has to pull a RV from Wisconsin to Western Colorado with four adults. Then it is challenged to drive as many trails as it can. Check off Poughkeepsie Gulch! Then it has to pull that RV back 1200 miles to WI. We have run all but two trails in western Colorado, Black Bear and the one near the Great Sand Dunes which needs partnering. We did Red Cone that empties on a radical downhill aluve. No damage, awesome trail. My wife walked down the hill because of the scary signs. Long wheelbase an advantage there. Used the winch once to get over a 14" ridge on the track. Could have used speed but too hard on front suspension.

OMFG! WHERE IS THE PAVEMENT? lol, j/k good job. What I woulda done different, though, is if you couldn't make that side route without winching, go back to where you straddle that notch and just winch up that. Wouldn't have dragged the vehicle so much.
@thomasgoodman95932 жыл бұрын
So.. you've climbed the wall? To me, at the time, the right side was the easiest. There are three routes, each with a winch anchor cemented into the rock. I was actually surprised I made it off the level ground without the winch. Keep in mind the truck is equipped to be drug on its underside. I chose that technology over a lift due to on road RV pulling, cost and comfort. It worked just as I designed it.

@@thomasgoodman9593 Old comment, but I'm trying to recall my thoughts of when I wrote it. I haven't done that obstacle, and I don't know your specific vehicle, so my assessment could easily be incorrect. It was just how it looked to me on this video. For my part, I agree with your philosophy about skid plating the bottom. I did the same with my Jeep. For my experience, I am used to being the "small guy" on 32"s following other club members who mostly ran 37's and 38's, so, dragging bottom was pretty common for me. I know I shocked them sometimes with where I would take my "little" Jeep. I particularly remember a rock garden they invited me to try and I accepted. Later on they told me they were surprised I would even attempt it. What they did not tell me, tho, is I'm pretty sure they were shocked that I made it without help or winching, lol. I made a lot of noise bouncing through it, tho. Still had the stock breakover skid plate, plus suspension skid plates, and a 3/16" thick skid plate on the fuel tank, and I'm sure I hit every one. To be fair, tho, I'd have to compare my tow vehicle, which is an older burban, back when they still had steel bumpers. Stock 3/4 ton with 1/2 sized tires(stock 1/2 ton tires are two sizes bigger than stock 3/4 ton tires) so it has pretty good ground clearance, other that the fat 14 bolt in the back. Looking at that video, I would try it with my burb, but I would back out if I thought I would do body damage. My departure angle is terrible, but I have the factory skids plus the hitch, and my approach angle is pretty impressive. The thing is fun on 3 wheels. Alone, the front dips, but with a cab full of people, the front floats up in the air, it's a neat feeling. Anyway, fun trip down memory lane.

Though I did not do the wall with it, my prior off roader was a 95 burb 1500 with Z71 and 34" tires. I climbed a lot of rocks with it but am pretty sure it would not have made the wall without witching. The wall is so tough it has cemented in anchor points at the top.

Smart off roaders buy a winch if you can't go full off road. Even IF you have it all you need a winch in Colorado. Said by a rookie novice off roader or maybe not even. Let's check the list: 12000lb winch* Bigger off road tires* Locker* 4:10 diffs* Super skid plate made of 2x1/2" steel bar stock covering t-case and cross bracket so rocks don't catch* BTW the bar in front is not a bull bar. It's a winch mount and chin protector. That's why no damage. You aren't required to keep any wheel on the ground. That's what the winch is for. Try Colorado, you'll see.

@kevinp53256 жыл бұрын
The problem isn't with the truck, it's with the driver. Stock-sized tires, no locking differentials, little to no lift, and a mega-cab Ram 2500....all those things stack the odds against the driver. The driver needs to understand his stock truck's limitations and modify accordingly. A properly modified Ram 2500 should have no problem getting over that type of terrain. And plenty of Ram owners have demonstrated that. Also, I really like how the camera guy and by-standers are trash-talking this guy the entire time, and then at the end applaud his efforts....classic monday morning quaterbacking.
@jenniferraymus90312 жыл бұрын
There is no problem with the driver besides being hard of hearing. He’s and engineer and mechanic and knew what he was getting into and prepared the truck for it. He wanted the challenge and has an awesome story to tell. Anyone can do it with “the proper” vehicle. That wasn’t his angle. The truck was fine and he still has it today.
@thomasgoodman95932 жыл бұрын
I'm the owner of that "stock" truck. So from that video you deduced that it was a stock 2500 with stock tires and no locking diffs. So it's a 3500 Megacab with 2 steps bigger better tires, rear locker, added beefy skid plate and was designed by me to be dragged on it's frame because...DUH...it's long. 10+ years of doing this helped make it work. So follow me if you will but you probably won't scaredy cat.

I want to see an appropriately setup full-size pickup tackle that obstacle. I want to setup an over-landing vehicle and a full-size truck is attractive for a family of 4.
@thomasgoodman95932 жыл бұрын
Most overlander rigs couldn't climb the wall without a winch because they are less aggressively engineered for this purpose. Lighter weight off road vehicles make better rock crawlers. My truck is NOT a rock crawler. But, in Colorado, sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do. In this case many lesser rigs would turn around. REAL off readers would not. We want the scars and stories. Don't get me wrong. I've turned around. Like Mosquito pass in October when 3 feet of snow made it impassable only 2 miles out of Leadville. You just have to have experience and confidence in you and your rig.

That is what you see here. Add one necessity that it has to pull an RV. Mine is a good compromise for all the requirements without making it uncomfortable on road.

I'm all for doing dumb things with repurposed vehicles, but DANG, nothing with a premium like THAT! Didja stick around, and watch any more of his calamities, or did you think it wise to bail, before he planted that beast where nothing short of a Russian Helo was gonna get it out?

ROFL! Well, at least you tried. Can't knock you for that. That's one helluva expensive way to prove a point. There's a massive difference between "You CAN'T do that", and "You SHOULDN'T do that".
