Poundland Eveready WiFi lamp teardown - with very cool chip

I'm not sure how much more streamlining they can do to a WiFi lamp that offers tunable white and RGB colour mixing options. It's basically a power supply, Wifi module and then a rather spectacular I2C serially controlled five channel linear regulator.
As with all products like this, running them at a lower power setting will result in much less heat and significantly longer operational life. The biggest factors in lifespan will be LED reliability and heat related aging of the electrolytic capacitors.
It's probably worth mentioning that the linear regulators used in these lighting products probably have other applications too. They are designed to operate over a wide voltage range, so should be suitable for low voltage projects as well as mains voltage use.
Although branded Eveready there was an Energizer sticker on the WiFi module. I'd guess this is a product from one of those companies that buys up dead brands for their status.
The Bright Power buck regulator is quite neat too. It's a very standard approach to providing a low voltage supply, and there seem to be different versions for different voltage ranges, with each chip having two voltage options that can then be cheated higher with a zener diode in the feedback path.
Not sure the purpose of the mystery capacitor. I'd guess it's a low value and intended to remove a bit of switching noise from the buck regulator.
Given the functionality of the light the circuitry is surprisingly uncluttered and minimalist. That's entirely down to the very modular approach.
If you enjoy these videos you can help support the channel with a dollar for coffee, cookies and random gadgets for disassembly at:- www.bigclive.c...
This also keeps the channel independent of KZfaq's algorithm quirks, allowing it to be a bit more dangerous and naughty.

There's firmware for the BK7231N and BK7231T chips which doesn't involve sending people your data. It's a firmware modeled after Tasmota, and is reminiscent of it. It's called OpenBK. Disclosure: It's a project I have contributed to in the past.

@@tin2001 There is indeed a fork of ESPHome that uses the LibreTiny development platform to support Beken chips and a couple others. It's pretty cool how after ESP was abandoned by Tuya the new chips also got an open firmware foiling Tuya's plans. Also, most of them only use the 2.4Ghz band, so if you are in an area with a lot of 2.4 ghz traffic, connections will not be reliable. I had a bunch of 'smart' devices that regularly just decided to drop out, and the app was written in such a way that I ultimately had to completely wipe out the setup I had and re-do it no less than three times before giving up and going over to devices using Zigbee. Shame, those lights were capable of some neat effects, but having to re-build the entire configuration multiple times over the course of six months just broke me of any wifi-based lights.

The company currently known as Energizer Holdings, Inc used to be named Eveready Battery Company. They originally sold all of their batteries under the Eveready brand name but in the 1980s they started selling their higher-end products under the Energizer name. Eventually the company renamed itself Energizer after that name became better known, but they continue to sell products under both names. They also own the Ray-O-Vac brand.

I would think that maybe the mystery capacitor is there to ensure reliable startup. At turn on this cap would momentarily pass voltage to the 14v rail to give it a kick start. I think that maybe the oversized box is to differentiate the wifi lamps from the normal ones, if it was in the same size box you could just imagine how many of these lamps would be returned as faulty when customers expecting a normal lamp plugged them in an it started flashing.

I've made a mistake! when I tried to "reverse engineer," this particular smart bulb 😢. I just followed the circuit examples from the data sheets for the various chips. I didn't realise that the RGB LEDs were powered by 14V supply (12 modified to be 14v). On the data sheet, the RGB LEDs seems to be powered directly from rectified mains, the same as the warm and cold white led's. I will now have to mention the mistake in the description of my video😢. On startup the mystery capacitor would charge up, passing current and pulling the +14v rail upwards. So could it be the startup supply for the 2522 ?? …. Awesome video as always, Keep up the good work Clive !!

The last bit is the tricky bit. In the past one of my high profile routers failed a security test because it had ports that several other undocumented admin names with fixed passwords that allowed the replacement of the firmware remotely. When I discovered that I loaded new firmware myself and made sure all known means of access were secured. But the non-technical types wouldn't be any the wiser.

It looks like the mystery capacitor is there to smooth noise coming from the 12V regulator, you don't see it often because companies cheaping out But without it in this case, it might affect that ripple on both outputs of the 14V and 3.3V supply, and create noisy data on the i2c bus or cause resets in the micro controller/WiFi module

Regarding the "I-wanna-be-paired-to-some-device" blinking: I got a ceiling light a few years ago. BT-LE remote controlled (RC sold separately), RGB-C-W, 2000 lumens on White mode, color temp from 3000 to 9000 Kelvin. Powered up first time, it started in a steady red mode. Put a 9V block into the remote, and press a key combination on it to pair it to the ceiling lamp. Wanna unpair? There's a video on YT with a six-step light-switch off-and-on procedure, with "OFF!" and "ON!" spoken, and a visual representation. Finish the procedure, and the lamp's back to full-red. Oh, and you *do need* an account if you want to use the smartphone app, but then you can use 4 pre-sets. The remote only has buttons for two pre-sets...

I think that's how a lot of these WiFi lights work. When they're not connected to WiFi they start flashing letting you know, "Hey, look at me, I am not connected to your WiFi! You might try and rectify this situation before I switch over to "Super-Disco Mode!" ... Then they behave properly once they're connected to the home WiFi.

almost all lamps from tuya that i had had the flashy flashy disco mode, ugh i also hate it and i am just a teen kid, dont like that they added the feature(also a reason i converted them to local tasmota) And yeah i was alsosurprised when i first tore them appart, interesting chip that brightpower! kinda sad tuya (probably the maker of the bulbs or the manufacturer of the wifi modules) switched from esp8266/esp8285 based modules to beken modules making hacking them a bit less easy (needing a new flasher program) but its still doable. maybe tuya made the wifi modules and energizer rebranded them or its a energizer module.

cool white.. iccckyyy. I love LEDs, hate the mystery of finding out a bulb is 5000 kelvin lol. Honestly I prefer 2700k lights, and unfortunately that type of light with a high cri and no flicker isn't always convenient (or cheap) to find. I've been settling for years on using 2700k bulbs with poor CRI and some high cri bulbs in strategic places like the kitchen. I hope in the future 92+ cri bulbs will just become the norm, I don't think people realize how anemic low cri makes things look. I'm susceptible to seasonal affective disorder, and even low cri bulbs or lights that are over 4000k can stir it up. I moved to Florida 10 years ago, it's where my wife is from, and I work outdoors, so I get lots of sunshine and it keeps the s.a.d. in line most of the time.

Energizer and Eveready are the same company. Not really much reason to buy their products today but I should point out that they were the ones that developed the alkaline battery, so they do have an achievement to be proud of. Duracell has no such accolades. But here in Belgium at least, they are made locally, so every store that sells batteries has them. Being a reputable brand is worth more than a lot of people give it credit for, too. You might not want to use them at home, but if it's company money you do, because if a battery does leak, explode or start a fire, you wouldn't want to find out the hard way that no one ever got fired for buying Duracell.
