Is it worth it?.. How could it not be, for under $3,000 you are getting an extremely versatile motorcycle capable of more than most riders will ever need. Is it great at any one thing in particular? No.. But it will do just about anything that you throw at it and for a fraction of the cost of alternatives.
In today's video we hop behind the handlebars of the 2023 Honda XR150L and see just what this small bore dorky little Dual Sport is all about.

We have one of these at work. It might not have the coolest looks but this probably the most comfortable bike I've ever ridden. It soaks up bumps and broken roads really well. It is fun and the power is strong enough for daily commute while being safe. And even the passenger would feel comfortable with it's thick stock seat. And the 12l tank with the 150cc engine means you can travel really long distance with this

Best all-round video I've seen on the XR150L so far! Re retaining the retro "XR" name - I'd have preferred "XL" for these bikes 'cause that was what Honda called the dual-sport versions vs their more Dirtbike/Enduro, viz."XR" versions back in the late 70s/80s. I have a 2015 XR150L here in South Africa. Visually it only seems to differ by (1) a slightly different shaped headlight cowling, (2) doesn't have an engine kill switch, (3) also has a kick-starter and (4) older style graphics. Besides some basic DIY maintenance, replacement of fork seals and disk pads, it hasn't missed a beat in over 12000 miles (20000 km) It averages 90 mpg and can cruise at 55 mph all day. I've fitted a one tooth smaller front sprocket for slightly better acceleration while not affecting its top speed as it now has the torque to achieve the same top speed.

this is the same bike we call honda bros 150 in brazil, it shouldn't be called an XR, since the engine is so small, in brazil honda developed a new style 160cc engine, OHC with lots of new features, this XR 150L is using the old 150 OHC engine, which has less power, Honda should really bring up the new 160 family to america, honda 160 BROS, Honda Titan 160, Honda Start 160, Honda Fan 160, these are the models that honda sell in brazil with this new 160 engine

hey Honda! don't come down too heavy on tanner! i guarantee you, there are potential customers that will now drop the hay down for one of these smaller bikes because of "the wheelie incident" tanners wheelie showed them that "yes!" the little bike has enough power to do a wheelie! it's not a gutless wonder! and that will secure the deal for them and they will buy one or two of em to put behind their motorhomes!😁

Great video, and cool vibe channel. Now I'm pretty sure my comments are the most important!😅 I was put on a CRF 150 at a dirt bike camp, and I was so happy that I was able to keep up and sometimes do better than the other students on CRF 230 bikes. I agree that this is all many riders will need for a dual purpose bike. But I have to confess what I like most about it is that now I don't have to feel like I'm on a little bike when I ride my TW200 or my XT225. Thank you, I'm on a big boy bike now!

Looks like you had a blast on this! I noticed you tended to cut footage on the dirt and sand sections before going through any tight turns. I know you admitted the suspension is very soft, so I’d expect it to have some major dive under braking. It seemed to do well on sharper road turns. How did it handle sharper turns on dirt?

Early August makes it 20 years since I started riding. The 2000 XR100 was my first, the XR250 in my garage was the 326th '03 XR250 to be put out (if I'm reading the VIN right) so that is probably 20 years old by now. My CRF230M is basically the cute, shorter XR sister to the XR250 to me. The XR's are indeed solid bikes and the XR150L is something I may consider down the line.

I am glad , you review that great little XR, I had one from new and gave her 58 000 kms of everyday riding. I live in south africa close the the coast and dirt trails, that little moto did an excellent job of travelling and exploring all the roads and little trails( legal of course) . It is small, simple, light and the seating positions is right for me. I was impressed with the all rounder ability of it. Road, dirts, technical rocky trails, mountains pass and bush riding, it saw all that. after years, winds, rains and 5 top engines melted, i decided to upgrade for CRF250L. my verdict: awesome little moto, cheap to run and will go there and back with regular interval oil change (2500kms). good riding positions and feels solid. Bad, small engine needs to be worked hard to get the best out of it , wind crossing is a mission, check the oil often before frying the engine , check the oil, check the oil. I still have it in the back of the garden, engine number 5 is gone ( top end and bottom) . i will recommend that bike to new and learner as well as biker from 14 to 77 years old. The experience rider would smile after that. The idea of this bike is an XR for cheap, it will seriously take you there with the right tyres. and you will be smiling how small and capable that little thing is.

About two months ago I took my girlfriend to look at real bikes since she has been riding a Navi and loves it. We found a dealer that had the XR150 and the XT250 and the XR150 just didnt cut it. It doesnt have full size wheels and with a 150cc engine she would have outgrown it in no time. I also didnt like how cheap the Honda felt but for the price in a few years for these things used are going to be AMAZING. If they drop quite a bit I might have to get one just because lol

I own a CRF250L & 2xCRF230L and was seriously looking at adding the XR150L to the stable for my Niece. However, a lightly used 08/09 CRF230L for around $3k makes a lot more sense. Lighter weight (268 vs 282), lower seat height (32”vs 33”), 6 speed vs 5 & more hp (19 vs 13) For me I’d like to see Honda transform the CRF250F into a street-legal XR250L 👍

As a soon to be new rider, I plan on getting the XR150L. Mostly for a commuter bike to and from work, since i drive a V8 truck as my main transport. So if I can get the distance as my current vehicle I'll be VERY happy. I fill up my truck once every other week and I mostly just go to work and back unless needed and it costs me anywhere from 60 to 70 bucks every time, if I could cut it down to just HALF that, it would be awesome. After doing some math I single tank of gas would be a monthly payment for it (Don't have the funds to buy outright but can afford the near 100 a month payment I got bills to pay lol) In your personally experience what would be the hardest thing to master on a bike? Hey Tanner, I'm in the market for a 520. Can't decide between the Forman and Ruby. In Canada you can't get a 520 Foreman foot shift with EPS! It’s more work than fun for what I need it for. Used around the farm, hunting/dragging moose and elk out of the bush, hauling fire wood, and some trails too. Tradition says SRA for work over play. My question is how would the Ruby do vs the Foreman ? The Ruby has a 1350lb tow rating over the FM’s 850lb. Is the “squat” problems real or overblown ? Then there’s the SRA versus IRS maintenance .. have you chewed up many boots in the back on your Ruby’? On your old 420 rancher video you said you didn't miss EPS and felt connected. In a Ruby adventure vid you said you loved and preferred the EPS? Would no power steering on the foreman be enough to make you go with a ruby over it (in my situation)? would like you opinion. I had a 2017 in the Philippines for 3 years. What did you think of gear spacing? I changed the sprockets and they spaced out nicely. As you mentioned I quickly changed the handlebars too. Would be great if they shared the CB150 efi and 6 speed along with the Australian Farm version rear disk brake. Seems to me Honda would save money manufacturing one bike vs all the slightly different models, and every market would have a better bike leading to more sales.
@cheeko_914

I have a 23 and I think the gear spacing is alright, i wouldve preferred a slightly shorter 1st gear and an extra 6th gear so it survives on the highway easier. My bike tops out at about 65mph on flat road, 72mph downhill. If theres any wind coming from the front i struggle to hit 60, which sucks in CT because our highways are mostly 65mph speed limits and traffic usually goes at 80-90.

Those to are different engine I'm afraid (Water cooled). That's why they sold both XR150 and the one with CB engine is called CRF150. If you can find one, it is definitely superior bike, but also 1000$ more expensive.

better than the honda imo. 150cc is a dog. extra cc with yamaha if you need it, at the same time the xt is very noob friendly if you don't want the extra power. i just don't see why anyone would buy the honda over the xt. i think the honda is made in thailand now. i wonder how long till the quality suffers

Honda should pay you a fat check for the wheelies. You just sold a thousand of these but..... the suspension looks like riding a marshmallow. The CRF250F is under powered and this looks like it's little anemic sister. You can never fault a Honda for its reliability but when are they going to make something with power and a decent suspension that is low maintenance? Do like KTM on the EXC-F and make it street legal and give the ECU code to Vortex so the average Joe can program it to run how they want. The 300L could lose about 30 lbs, gain 5 hp and upgrade the suspension for off road and they would sell. Call it the XR300L. Love the videos and hope to see more manufacturers give you a call.

Serious question. Next year i am thinking of doing a big ride, from colombia to chile. I am looking to buy a bike for me and one for the wife. Important factors are, comfortable, durability, safety and repairable with parts being available anywhere. I landed on this bike for its versatility and price tag. I am a bit worried about the power. We have done vietnam on 125 cc and that went very well. Although this will be different altitude altogether. Do you think it would handle altitude well? How comfortable is it on long rides? We are not planning on taking highways, so i am not worried about achieving high speeds. Its all about the cruise.

I know of a case where someone made a trip across the country in a 50cc scooter. However a 149cc bike would make for a much better ride. I don't know the laws for all states, but for California and Nevada, a bike must be a minimum of 200cc to go on a freeway. Even Highway 50 in Nevada has a speed limit of 70 MPH. It would be scary, but fun to ride The loneliest road in Americ.
