"Drawing is always suffering" is so felt. It's the last few weeks of the semester for us and I'm dying over how many projects are due.

it truly is an art school, every room feels like a work of art, i feel incredibly lucky to even see it

So glad this still gets taught. Great to see people actually drawing and painting from life. Here in the UK we have a contest on TV called, "Portrait Artist of The Year", which, don't get me wrong, there are some great paintings produced, but most of the time, the painters/competitors, take a photo of the famous sitter (whomever it may be, some actor or celeb') and then spend all their time copying the photo from their Apple ipads. The sitter sits there for 4 hours while a semicircle of people sit looking at their ipads behind their easels. Only once did I see one of the finalists have to sit and paint studies from life (this one was a commission to paint a famous opera singer. The oil studies she produced were barely recognisable. When the opera singer saw the life studies you could see she was visibly shocked, disappointed. On seeing the finished portrait the opera singer said she hoped the finished painting would be better than the studies! The finished portrait was done, you guessed it, from an ipad/photo) The sitter may as well just turn up, let them all take a couple of photos each, then leave. It is certainly not how I did life-drawing classes! Times change, eh? Art colleges and academies in the UK teach very little of the "traditional" art skills such as are seen in this video, everything is contemporary, conceptual and/or digital etc, which I agree with that being taught, as I do like contemporary art but, not at the expense of losing these ways of working. Figurative artists/students have the hardest time in art colleges in the UK, simply because there are so few tutors who understand or are proficient in these time honoured ways of working. I wish this video was longer. Cheers for posting. x

Great art is made by those who study art. The appreciation and emulation of work from the past is what imbues any piece with it's treasure. Viewing art is like treasure hunting. Beach combing for gems.

I love these old artschools where the architecture is beautiful and its so atmospheric must be beautiful to work in, I hate all the modern art schools where its just sleek blank walls of a boring old building. Ur school is like the dream.

Gosh I love this video. It was fascinating. You've done something great in making it - I'm confident it will inspire plenty of people now and in future. Of course what we really need to do is to ensure that artists and the creative can live a decent life after university. Once we get past existential problems of survival (and barbaric warfare) maybe it will be a golden age for artists. Let's hope this day comes quickly!

Thank you for showing the chapel inside also - I love religious icons and notice there are lots on the academy walls in classrooms etc. Some say in art history that the very "grand" style of russian painting from the late 1800's was very influenced by iconography of saints etc. Either way, I love watching these day-to-day experiences inside the academy and wonder what it would have been like for students all throughout its history.

Having had a brief brush with 'art education' in the UK back in the 1970s, and immediately rejecting it as rubbish, I can't tell you how interesting this is. Had there been anything like this available, who knows what level I would be at today!

I envy artists who managed to attend the Academy. Long ago I met the daughter of Nicolai Fechin, who studied there. We became good friends. She was a very sweet lady. She told me about how seriously the Russians pursued art academics. I taught myself to paint by copying Fechins works.

I love that no matter how old, classical, or important an art school is, it always has missing floor tiles, holes in walls and ancient bowls used for mixing chemicals XD I have a question: are all your painting/drawing classes about realistic figure/scene portrayal? Based on the fragments you show all students have a similar composition, style and subject. Also most of the older artworks shown on the exhibition look like they were made by the same artist (I'm aware they weren't). Do you have any "freestyle" classes?

Hi Ksenia, I hope you'll go on with your vlog for foreseeable future. There is narrative with some people that the Old m asters were using various optical devices, camera Lucida, obscura, etc, how otherwise they could be so good? Yes, this sort of ignorance does exist. David Hockney even wrote a book "proving "that the Old Masters used certain devices,etc. However, your vlogs show that Academy students don't use cany devices or computers to achieve good results. Incidentally, a few years ago Hockney had an exhibition at the Royal Academy in London. In terms of colour it was like Disneyland in London. Probably old age decline. (There is no Disneyland I Britain, you have to go France).

For me, art academies and schools were quite a pain to be honest. I studied and practiced, put work and effort to be good at art and still teachers or professors shitted on me all over the place, saying Im not good enough, still need more work, do you even practice? Etc. And this is how I ended up on film academy, don't regret it but still don't understand why I had such shit luck... well at least Im in a better place now.

Thank you for showing the canvas preparation process! But why do you use an acrylic primer when painting in oils, instead of an oil-based or water-soluble primer? Solely to save time for the drying process? Thank you for sharing with us 💞

Была там в 14 лет, нам рассказывали как проходит обучение, и уж не помню что такого конкретного рассказывали, но до экскурсии я хотела поступить в Репу, а после решила что ни ногой туда. Прошло много лет и мне очень жаль что я не пошла на высшее художественное и пошла в дизайн. Понимаю что и там и там сложно, но на дизайне главный минус - дизайна как такого нет, ему не учат нигде и никак. Редко дают задания и отправляют самообучаться через гугл и ютуб. А я мечтала чтобы меня где то учили живописи, чтобы был опыт ручной работы. Может в детстве мне рамки в Репе показались слишком строгими, а может быть экскурсовод так подал информацию об учебе, непрезентабельно что отбил все желание смотреть в сторону этого университета. Как вы сами можете оценить свою учебу там на данном этапе? Насколько интересно, насколько тяжело? Были ли у вас на уме другие места где мечтали учиться или Репа это как раз то что нужно? Извиняюсь если неправильно университет называю, по памяти, уже лет 10 прошло, как я там была.
