I was fortunate to ski Main Chute one day in April many years ago when I was a student at the U of U. The hike was killer...sucking wind above 10k feet. Took me about 45 min to reach the summit. The pow was great in their that day. Jump turn after jump turn descending the chute. One of my most memorable skiing experiences in Little Cottonwood. My best was 3 days after a 55" dump the Canyon opened. Never skied such deep powder. You had to be on a steep slope just to move. Best snow in the world!

I remember skiing some out of balance shoots at Alta one year with some locals and if they hadn't been with me and I had skied too far I would have been stuck up on a cliff or head skied over the edge of this Cliff there's some gnarly places adult that would make your knees shake but I skied with a bunch of good all these and Aspen back in 82 I've seen a lot of good Australian skiers for sure you guys must have some good stuff to ski on out there I would think

Yes, I think it was $16 for a ticket when I went around '88. The no-frills, no-glitz Alta vibe, including the Goldminer's Daughter, made it a pretty memorable first ski trip outside New England.

June 1st, 1974. The lifts were closed, so Brent Beardsley & I hiked, from the base, up the west shoulder. We met a couple of SoCal guys in town for the Steve Miller concert. Beautiful day and a great run. Got the whole thing on my 8mm film camera. This was one of my best memories from my U of U days. It hadn't been a heavy snow winter, but we skied all the way to the base.

I skied this shoot in 98. Back with skinny sticks. Lots of crud although not as much as what you had. After skiing it I hiked back up and skied Baldy Shoulder. The "Shoulder" is the terrain just to the skiers left of the main Baldy shoot. It was MUCH better skiing! None of this terrain is that demanding for a good skier. Just the entry points a little tricky. That's it.

I enjoyed your video, have to put Baldy on my list, I thought the rear facing gopro provided insight into the shear drop off on the decent, especially when you skied off of the cornice. The forward POV camera's just doesn't show the steepness of the fall line. One of the things I always liked about Alta is that you had to hike to get to some of the best skiing. I had to smile about the description of the climb. This has motivated me to check out getting a Gimbal.
@JVIEWmounts
@JVIEWmounts 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Robert! I agree, the steepness is hard to capture with a camera. Gimbals are great for smoothing things out a bit but this was shot about 5 seasons ago and camera stability has improved quite a bit even without them. I notice too with 360 cameras (GoPro, Insta360 . . .) that you don't even really need a gimbal so you may want to consider that as well instead of investing in a gimbal. The camera mount I used and designed may finally be available next year. I'm finalizing design and working on starting up a business for this mounting system for third person perspective.

I’m not trying to be a dick, to each their own, but come on man? Thanks for sharing and congrats on the accomplishment. I’ve skied all over the world and this is still one of my favorites. It’s certainly not the steepest or most technical, but as a diehard Utah skier it’s definitely something to accomplish at least once. It’s even more spectacular in February after a heli drop. Now THAT was a great experience. Sure I’ve heli skied chutes five times as long and three times as steep in powder in Alaska and BC, but again.....if you are a diehard Utah native this is a must. Good work!

I was a ski bum at Alta for one season, skied six days a week all season and a week after it closed. I was an expert expert rated skier then. If you ski the chutes right after a dump, five feet in a night is not uncommon. Then it's a rush. After it's been skied down or wind worn it gets fast and you have to do jump turns or hit the rock walls. That season a girl didn't know this and jumped into the chutes. She hit the wall on her third turn, her body slide for over a quarter mile across the main slope after it exited the chute. Five people died that winter on the slopes. Three of them in avalanches. About average for a season they say.

When you ski that ridge below the chutes the left side is a 2000 foot vertical wall, open air. The right side is a steep slope leading to granite outcroppings and thick pines. There is a major snow drift over hanging the right side. You want to stay right in the middle of the ridge as you come down. I didn't, I favored the right skiing out onto the drift. That cliff just gave me the willys. Suddenly a crack appeared to my left and the whole drift descended toward the granite outcroppings and the pines. I fell on my side and saw I had about 30 feet before I would crash onto the granite the snow was exploding off of below me. I rolled onto my back, tucked my skis tight up to my chest. I had one shot at this. Then I rolled down hill onto my skis. I immediately shot sideways across the avalanche out onto an open are of slope but now I was going mega miles an hour toward a thick stand of pines. I cranked a hard left turn just missing the pines but was now heading back into the avalanche. As I entered the avalanche again it suddenly came to a stop. I was encased in the snow from the knees down. If I had fallen I would have never got up the snow was as hard as Styrofoam. Even six inches under that I would have never got up. Skiing Alta on LSD and pot.

If so I am looking to interview about 15 people that may use a 3rd person mount to get feedback and help shape the product. Many things have changed and improved on cameras since I shot this video using GoPro's and gimbals. I agree that tilting up a bit more would have been better on the backwards shot. I'm sold on 360 cameras now as they can capture everything all at once and then you can choose the perspective(s) you want for an edit.

Do an alt version w/o the music. Maybe just your thoughts going down. Like is the snow soft or hard, fast or slow, etc. It's funny to think what it would look like if someone was capturing it from below you. I don't get a feel about how steep it is; it seems like you took it cautiously, but I can't tell for sure. In other words, the cammera perspective only takes us so far. I'm not a big fan of hearing my own voice but I do agree that more narration would be good to talk more about conditions and feelings at the moment. The video capture was good for the time (2015) but new cameras including 360 cameras capture it much better. A drone would be great too but not allowed in the resort. It was very icy and firm on this decent so with all the camera equipment strapped on and no helmet I was admittedly measured in my decent. WHAT?!? ... bumps forning in Baldy Shutes??? ... 😂 ... In 1978 (when I was 28) I was working for Alta Central (Avalanche central radio communications for Alta, Snowbird ski patrolmen, Forest Ranger for Little Cottenwood Cyn and all lodges) ... so knew best time to do the shutes and will never forget it! Mahalo nui for providing this footage as a great memory for me too ... but NO bumps in the shutes back then ... ‘78 was a time when shorter skiis were not fully welcomed by the old timer’s long skis ... and some of the first snowboard designs were being experimented with that held your boots about 6 inches high off the board 😂... funny looking thing ... but having grown up surfing, was easier to learn than alpine skis. Was back at Alta in 2008-9 working for the ski school, last time for me skiing as now at 71, cannot walk for excercise due to meniscus gone in one knee :(((

Pretty much from Alta and skis only. You can go after the season ends and hike up with a snowboard:)

Hi there! I'm a fellow Alta skier and Utahn and I was wondering if I could please use that photo of Mt. Baldy in the opening sequence? I would like to use it for a Facebook page "Keep Mt. Baldy Bald" where I link to a petition asking Alta and the US Forest Service to please NOT build a tram up Mt. Baldy. I'd like to run Facebook ads to try to spread awareness and gather signatures for our petition. We need a photo of Baldy, of course, to show how majestic it is and how a tram would degrade the Alta experience and change the beautiful feeling at the summit. Please let me know if you'd be willing to let me use your photo for our petition and Facebook page! Thanks for reading. ( ps here is the petition: crm.saveourcanyons.org/p/dia/action4/common/public/?action_KEY=21666 )

Jude, absolutely! I have other shots as well. Are you taking about the picture that is the "cover photo" of the video on KZfaq? Let me know how I can send a jpeg of that to you and I'll get it to you. I didn't realize they were thinking of putting a lift to the summit. What a tragedy that would be! The experience of climbing up there to ski the Baldy chutes is something I've been doing for 20 years and it's such an amazing experience that would be no more if they gave it lift access. Matthew R Steubing on FB . . . cover photo is standing on top of Baldy last Spring after the resrort had closed.

Why not do this and film it in good conditions, gnarly at best!

Agreed, it was very gnarly on this day and I did return under better conditions a couple years later after the resort had closed and I skinned up. Much better conditions but still not powder . . . one of these days! kzfaq.info/get/bejne/p7Ghia9eztDVknk.html

btw I did that 500 foot climb after a major dump of waste deep powder. We were all on LSD, chain smoking joints. Climbing thru the waste deep snow with our skis on at a side step run cause we were in a hurry to get up there before anybody else. We dropped acid once a week and went off for the day, they called us the L squad. I tell ya nothing bets skiing Alta on LSD and marijuana. Shame on me. lol

I really liked video on your way up and the view from the top. However, I disagree with your camera mount and find it actually a very nauseating point of view. I don't blame you for not wearing a helmet because they are a very uncomfortable and bulky but a helmet mount camera gives you a better view for a video in my opinion. Additionally, why does everybody have the music volume so freaking loud? The music should be light in the background only and you should still be able to hear ski to snow contact as well as breathing. Good for you for skiing it though. I haven't been there since May 1994. I hope to make it up there sometime again soon.

Thanks for the feedback. This was done about 5 years ago. Camera stability and mount improved since I did this one. The reason I even started playing with this mount was because of the helmet mount which I find really boring . . . watching your ski tips go back and forth. The exception to this would be when a world class skier is ripping a crazy line but for the average skier it's just boring to watch. I have newer videos posted using a 360 cam that gives better results. Of course the better the skier the better the footage. I'm pretty good but I'm not Candide Thovex. Pretty sure if I strapped the mount and camera on him it would be much more impressive! Note taken on music:)

its just not smart..... helmets play a huge role in minimizing concussions... you can also hit your head on rocks, logs, ice.... just not smart.

I will find ton of people, whom will tell you ,going skiing is not smart.All those killer trees( remember Sonny Bono? of course). I'm not advocating against helmets. I'm advocating to respect peoples freedom of choice. If author of this video decides to ski without helmet, let it be.

idc about that tree argument.... but not wearing a helmet is idiotic... i understand people make their own choices but it doesn't change my opinion of them.

Jump slide sideways, jump slide sideways, but snowboarders "ruin" everything right? hahaha. This looked really boring, snowmobiling is where it's at. No lines, always get to new snow and don't deal with thousands of people stacked around you.
