Rural communities in United States and elsewhere often use portable backup electricity generators in case of power outages. But these machines can be costly to run for longer times and require periodic attendance. A team from West Virginia University is developing a small, natural gas-powered generator that will be able to run for years. VOA's George Putic reports.

Simple, I love it. That would work great as a generator for a hybrid gas/electric airplane.

minus the part were they already have a generator... its called an alternator.. and its on pretty much every engine in existence.

Yes indeed, which these projects never seem to acknowledge. Without quite saying it, they often give the impression they've invented something revolutionary. The credit belongs with Tesla.

This type of generator should be an option on for electric car to turn them into temporary hybrids, the conventional hybrids car are overly complex for the For the sake of integrating into a internal combustion engine assembly line. Turning an electric car into a hybrid is much better than turning a internal combustion engine car into a hybrid, much fewer parts needed.

interesting design. I wonder why linear generators have not been used in electricity generation. maybe because most power generators make steam to turn a turbine. unless there is a better design there would be no reason to change.
@YodaWhat
@YodaWhat Жыл бұрын
To reach 40% thermal efficiency, steam turbine systems require massive complication of the basic Rankine Cycle, which renders those plants unable to do proper load following. Some utility companies even GIVE AWAY power overnight, just to keep the plants 'revved up' to the level needed for carrying the daytime load. The extra equipment involved in Steam Regen and Steam Reheat versions of Rankine add a LOT of complexity and cost and heat loss. A simple engine like this is infinitely more flexible, and can do a HCCI cycle that can be significantly more than 40% efficient... AND still have hot exhaust that can do additional work.

whos house is running on 1kw of energy?
@thamesmud
@thamesmud 7 ай бұрын
That's 24kwh a day which is enough for all the non heating loads in a house in the UK. We have a large property and seldom use more than this over a day. In the depths of winter the gas boiler runs 24x7 for heating load so the waste heat from the generator would reduce the boiler demand.

"1 kW of electricity enough for basic power requirements of a single-family home." WTF? Are you live in 1930?
@MastaSquidge
@MastaSquidge 3 жыл бұрын
You must have forgotten what "basic" means. If you get rid of the luxuries and conserve power very frugally you can easily live indefinitely on 1kw as long as you have reliable natural gas supply. A modern refrigerator for example only pulls 100 to 250 watts. A gas water heater and gas oven/stove uses almost no power. If you stick to the low side, use LED lighting, and have a high efficiency furnace with a high quality lto surge battery for handling motor startup of the fridge compressor and furnace fan 1kw is more than enough. It's only when you start tacking on tvs, game systems, computers, microwaves, etc that you start running up the power needs. Of course if you have an LTO power bank you can easily supplement the generator with solar, but the point is power grids aren't as reliable as natural gas.
@anotherone7585
@anotherone7585 3 жыл бұрын
@@MastaSquidge so washing machine/ dryer doesn't consider as basic. also the air conditioning, convection stove, water heater, etc. If you think the "basic" only consists of a refrigerator, then yes 1kw is enough for it. Do an energy audit for your modern home to find out why 1kw is not enough.
@anotherone7585
@anotherone7585 3 жыл бұрын
@@MastaSquidge building maintenance also requires a lot of energy, especially when you live in a place that can be -25 Celsius during winter. I understand most of the furnaces are still using natural gas/oil, but the ventilation system doesn't only "burn".
@MastaSquidge
@MastaSquidge 3 жыл бұрын
@@anotherone7585 No, a washer and dryer is not considered basic. Nor is air conditioning. You can wash and dry laundry without power and A/C is a luxury. Convection ovens* (no such thing as a convection "stove") can be gas. I covered both the oven/stove and water heater. This presupposes you are using natural gas appliances. Which I also stated. I also covered the energy needs of the blower in the furnace. Don't confuse needs with wants.
@MastaSquidge
@MastaSquidge 3 жыл бұрын
@@anotherone7585 Obviously there are other concerns in special climates. Sitting here pointing out all the examples where its not enough doesn't change all the examples where it is enough. Furthermore, this is essentially a prototype. There's no reason this can't be scaled up to a higher output. Try not being so negative.

@ltrodd
@ltrodd 3 жыл бұрын
No, not even close. A combustion engine is more like 25% thermally efficient, maybe up to 35 for an efficient one. There's a reason they need large cooling systems
@yakut9876
@yakut9876 4 ай бұрын
The efficiency of a combustion engine is ( 45 % - 51 % ) and can be higher depending on the design and depending on the fuel used. An internal combustion engine with hydrogen may be 80 % efficient because hydrogen is explosive and it generates sufficient push / pull force since most of its output is an explosion Instead of heat, this is the opposite of gasoline. In fact, most of the losses that occur are because the combustion of fuel produces more heat than produces push / pull force ( also using Spark ignition instead of compression ignition ), and this is the nature of combustion, unfortunately.
