Starlit Citadel reviews Power Grid with Kaja Sadowski and Joanna Gaskell. In Power Grid, players compete to power the largest number of cities by building power plants and connecting cities together. The game takes between two to three hours and supports 2 to 6 players.

I know these girls have finished doing these videos but honestly I found them to be by far the best board game review channel. Would love to see them back.

Power Grid is one of my favorites. It sounds clunky, but it actually is very smooth and fluid when you are actually playing it. It's fun to try to make long term plans, and then get them screwed up by people building where you wanted to go, eating up resources you were going for, outbidding you on a power plant you wanted, etc.

The theme's not my cup of tea either, but we're going for a broad range of games here, and it's undeniably popular. Not everyone wants silly or epic themes in their strategy gaming. We will be shooting a Munchkin review in the next few weeks, if that's any consolation...

information to process. Mitigating this by hiding money counts, placing a time limit on actions may be harsh, but it also gives a sense of urgency that adds flavor to the game. It is not a game for everyone, but it does succeed in producing a game authentic in its feel. I can sense the friction in domination and the subtle talks on discussing the "merit" of power plants up for auction or in the resource buying phase.

I wasn't very excited about PowerGrid but after working through editing the video and playing it a few times i find myself very intrigued. I really like the double sided map of germany and the USA. definitely want to play it some more

Hah, fair enough. I'm in a similar boat. If you want a deeper strategy game (worker placement/resource management mechanics) with a more appealing theme, you may want to check out Dungeon Petz, which we've also reviewed. It's one I really enjoy, both for the theme and the gameplay.

Um, yes. "Unintentional" pun. The Robot Expansion isn't actually designed for pure solo play, but as a supplementary player for a 2-player game, since 2-player Power Grid is often not optimal. I haven't played with it myself, but it sounds like the primary function of the robot is to add a bit more balance to a 2-player game by sucking up some of the resources/good power plants, and not to create a fully competent opponent for 1 player. You probably wouldn't find it enough of a challenge 1-on-1.

I like to balance my game collection and game that have more realistic theme like Co2 or PowerGrid are essential to me... Sustainability, Market, Math, strategy are awesome theme. Fighting mystic creatures is ok too but I don't understand when as soon as a game have a realistic theme it becomes boring. Also the review is really well done but mostly descriptive and you don't feel any excitement at all by the reviewers which make the game look more boring that what it is...

This game is really fun. It rewards player skill, and I definitely felt like I was competing mentally with everyone. The biggest draw of this game is the long term playability in that the luck factor is really minimal and the games are influenced heavily on the personality and playstyles of the other players; essentially there is no "optimal" strategy that works every game and with everyone. Unfortunately, you may need to usher some people to be faster in their play as it there is plenty of

Kaja, Did you really say "Not everyone is going to be TURNED ON by managing a power grid"?? Gotta love the unintended pun. I notice you also mentioned a Solo play expansion. I have difficulty getting any opponents to play this game, so do you recommend the Robot Player?

It's getting boring just how good your reviews are! I LOVE this game after about four plays, and I tend to do okay - but I still can't even imagine winning at it... The timing aspects of triggering Step 2 and End-of-game, and bidding wisely in the first couple of auctions... it's a nightmare! But I'll always say "yes" to a game of this... X

for the two arguing wether power grid is better then muchkin. have either of u actually played both games, to be able to actualy judge wich is better. I have always balived that you should at least try a game once before judging wether the game is good or not. there have been so many games that I have all ways thought would suck, but once I sat down and played them, I offten found them to be a lot of fun. so play a game once befor judgeing it.

people actually tried to compare power grid to munchkin? Power Grid is for people who have a fucking brain. Munchkin is there for the inebriated to mess around with when you need a social game. They can't be compared, argued over, etc.

I'm not saying one is better than the other, if you like games like Power Grid fine, but I doubt there are many people that find bureaucracy more entertaining than fighting monsters, getting cool weapons, and back stabbing your friends.

You're totally discrediting the hard work that goes into these reviews. There is absolutely no repetition in anything that they say, and they explain heavy ruled games accurately in under 7 minutes. They may not have the same passion as Tom Vasel, but the content of these videos are unmatched from what I've seen. I imagine the only reason for less passion in the videos is due to the fact that their reading a heavily worked-on script because clearly they have a great passion for boardgames.

When I watch a review I want to know whether or not the game is worth buying and playing. If I want to know how to play the game I'll watch a how-to-play video or read the rules. Power Grid is one of the funnest games I've played, this video was boring and didn't do the game justice. It is an excellent game for beginners. But, I appreciate your hard work. Cheers.

Hit done too soon, also want to add I couldn't get over how you both say resources. "Re-zors-is." How do you say source? Just put RE in front of the word "source."

Great review... but this game seems so boring that it hurts. You guys should do some reviews of good card games like Sentinels of the Multiverse, Munchkins, Poo, Kittens in a Blender, and... I can't find any review on Nuts

Let me get this straight... you think a game about running a power plant and dealing with red tape is "excellent" and a game that is made for fun with interesting monsters and silly humor is "worse than boring"? What kind of bizarroverse do you live in? Different strokes indeed. I'm not saying Munchkin is perfect but I don't think anyone with a rational thought in their head would say it's more boring than Power Grid.
