Great artwork and theme, but I'm astonished how they didn't incorporate a board for the game, which could've added a deeper/interactice layer. Seems like a totally missed trick!

I'm so glad you're starting this next chapter of Starlit Citadel with a 2000 game. I've always thought that board games are like literature. The best books were written long ago and the best board games have already been designed years ago and meant to last lifetimes. That's why we call them classics. Obviously you'll get to newer games, I'm not saying we should ignore them. But board games are not playstations, they're not necessarily about what's new. Old games are just as relevant as new games because nothing's stoping you from playing them. There' no new technology that's coming to replace them. They're made from cardboard.
@ioannispaxinos51717 күн бұрын
This is amazing. I have missed Kaja and Joanna so much, they were the last reviewers I remember that talked about the best classic boardgames in a way you hear them being talked about in local game stores and friend groups. I feel like the industry has taken a weird turn with an abundance of overproduced, unimaginative games and an endless cycle of reprints in roll and write or legacy forms. Reviewers have become jaded and aren't talking about games they love to play any more but instead are promoting whatever shiny new game is going to help them increase their influence in the industry. Kaja and Joanna talked about games because of the joy they gave them. I hope you continue in their footsteps. Good luck from a loyal viewer.

Legendary: Buffy is my BtVS game of choice. There are so many combos of different Buffy characters you can have going up against all of the best big bads. Plus, its just a good deckbuilder with an thematic light/dark mechanic.
@StarlitCitadel2 ай бұрын
Very different style of game for sure but I’ve heard it’s a lot of fun!
@Nexusofgeek2 ай бұрын
Except that it’s a deck builder so that’s an automatic no for me. I hate deck building games
@peterriecks91262 ай бұрын
@@Nexusofgeek I doubt that Legendary: Buffy would change your mind. Instead I would recommend this one in the video or the newer one by Jasco. There's also the Unmatched version with Buffy, Spike, Angel, and Willow but that is more of a card-based duel and doesn't feel as epic or nostalgic as any of the other games.
@falconashek89132 ай бұрын
It reminds me of Legendary Buddy the vampire slayer. That would be a good review for the next video.
@StarlitCitadel2 ай бұрын
I’ve heard of that one! Whats the mechanics like for it?
@falconashek89132 ай бұрын
@@StarlitCitadel It’s the same as any Legendary deck building game, but with all the Big Bads and Heroes. The change in a legendary play mat is of Summerdale and all the locations. It introduces the light and dark side of the evil that’s present in Summerdale at the time if the light side is very good then you get a bravery token. They are used for ether attack or recruit power for each token you use. When it gets too dark, the big bad thickens and you have to do what it says on their card. Cordelia doesn’t help that much if she’s with your group, go figure.

Always happy to see more boardgame content on youtube. Excited to see what you have in store. I do have one question that did not seem particularly addressed in this video though. I am really not trying to be ugly here, but this question is going to come up, so I am trying to toss it to you as softly as I can before folks that are more skeptical might ask it more harshly. Can you talk more about what connection you have to the original channel and why you did not make a new channel instead? The only connection mentioned in the video was "I was a massive fan and avid watcher of the channel" and being geographically close to the original. That level of connection seems like its a bit loose to say that anything is "coming back". With that minimal level of connection it can give a perception that you're performing channel necromancy to get 25K free subscribers. Its hard breaking in on youtube, so I certainly don't begrudge you trying to find a way to jumpstart the algorithm for yourselves. But if that is what is happening, being more upfront about it engenders more understanding from the community than trying to gloss over it. I don't have any special position to judge, I just used to watch this channel's videos from a country away, so maybe you were super plugged in with the local community, were the #1 backer on patron, always talking on whatever discord/forums/etc they used to have, spent most days at the Starlight Citadel shop, etc, and were close to it in ways that are not apparent to an outsider.

If I recall, this wasn't released in Europe. An inferior Buffy game came out in Ireland, and my Buffy-obsessed friend had to import a copy of this game from an American retailer. Also, wow! Early Rob Davio! I played this long before I started recognizing designer names.

StarlitCitadel used to be a business right ? not just a show on KZfaq. Was the old business in Canada owned and ran by Kaja and Joanna ? I thought the business closed down and went offline over 6 years ago. Did you buy the business ? or start a new business ? or you just picked up the KZfaq channel and you operate somewhere else in Canada ?

One of the first years we went to GenCon was the year they released the Buffy Legendary set. As much as I wanted it, I knew two things to be true: I had no interest in getting into collecting Legendary sets, with all the friends I would convince my then limited game group to play next l Buffy wasn't going to be one of them.

Starlit Citadel got me into the hobby of board gaming almost a decade ago and I was very sad to see It slowly disappear. So excited to see what you two have in store to restart this community! I know that we actually have quite the burgeoning community of board game creators locally as well so it would be super cool to perhaps see some interview/first look videos with some of those people. Best of luck to you both <3

@@StarlitCitadel I know that Hot Banana Games (Steam Up) is coming up with a new one soon as well as the team from Rose Gauntlet Entertainment (Keystone). Kudos and good luck. I cannot tell you how disappointed I am that two female hosts have been replaced by a male host and a female host. Males voices dominate board game discussions online -- the original Starlit Citadel was unusual in its time to have two extremely articulate women analyzing and discussing boardgames. This is an opportunity lost, if you ask me. Ah, well.
@StarlitCitadel2 ай бұрын
We appreciate that insight. Kaja and Joanna were ahead of their time and a shining light in a very male-dominated community. Their contribution to showcasing female voices is not lost on us and we hope to feature episodes with a female-focused cast and make sure we are showcasing all kinds of various personalities in the space when we can.

Look I'm not going to lie, I'm going to miss the old pair... But what kept me coming back was really their [information] presentation style. Pease, consider a similar approach. I don't expect you to be clones, but, y'know... If the location is different, the hosts, the presentation, the camera work, and everything else including the background staff, and even the original SC shop having closed up... it's basically a Ship of Theseus. Is it really Starlit Citedel? I guess, in short, it needs to feel like you're a revival, rather than a new brand trying to bank on the people who forgot to unsubscribe when the old channel ended. I don't mean any of this in an antagonistic way, I'm just trying to give *specific* feedback.
@StarlitCitadel2 ай бұрын
We appreciate that feedback. We were really nervous about making new content on the channel and whether the audience would even accept new personalities into the community. This community is the most important thing to us and we will be paying close attention to every comment in the coming weeks to see how we can develop a style that keeps the same informational delivery Kaja and Joanna presented while letting our new hosts show off their personalities. Our intention is to follow in Kaja and Joanna's footsteps, keep the content true to how they delivered it in the past but let our new hosts deliver that content with their unique voices. Unfortunately, the previous location has permanently closed so in deciding on a new location, Pizzeria Ludica has been a stable of the board gaming community for 10+ years and felt it would be a great place to call home for this channel. We hope to continue to upgrade our set in the coming weeks and match the same level of production quality that the channel once had but in the meantime, we hope you enjoy what we present.

@@StarlitCitadel Well SC (the channel) was certainly a staple on in my game hobby, though I am nowhere near Canada. To be honest they were also always a little behind by the time reviews came out; seemed like they reviewed reliable and evergreens, stuff that any level of gamer could come into the shop and buy. However, between that and the very "produced" reviews -- which probably lead to higher cost and a slower release schedule -- was probably not very algorithm-friendly. As far as the presentation style... you don't need my life story, but: 100% genuinely, I adapted their presentation style as part of my own sales business. I sold a wide range of home theater equipment, some luxury, some not. But people needed to be educated on the right solution, how their product would do what they needed, and wanted, and generally how to use it. I was not one for emptying people's wallets, but especially not one for taking money for a product that would get misused or unused. It's tough to be an honest salesperson to begin with (especially when I also dealt in six-figure systems), so finding a way to offer a pleasant, useful, educational presentation despite their financial incentives, was something I valued from SC. That is why it was important to me, and why I brought it up. My work ethic and career-facing self, in many ways, was shaped by Kaja, Joanna, and William T. Riker. And to be clear, I'm nowhere near as cool as any of them, but y'know.
