I think i have a different use for this module in mind. I could use it to trigger the Raspberry Pi, fed via a 5V step-down from 24V, to safely shut down, while providing power to it. So i don't have to carefully manage turning a printer with Klipper off and can just unpower it anytime. I don't actually have power outages, i just like turning off ALL appliances when i leave home to reduce fire hazard.

Thanks for making this video. Exactly what I was looking for since we have a lot of power disruptions where I live. I had a failed print due to power loss when I was trying to print the module cover for the UPS module - the irony of it! I guess I won't be able to use this with the stock Ender 3 main board as I also have BLTouch set up already. There may not be any free pin. I am just waiting for the SKR Mini E3 V3.0 board to show up so I can set this up.

Thanks so much for this video and for effectively teaching me Marlin. In the end, this module is not very useful to me because it doesn't work through Octoprint (thanks for confirming that in the comments below). And the printer also uses the module's power on every shutdown, not just those limited to power loss, meaning that the normal shutdown process takes an extra minute. Oh well, it was a fun learning experience, but I really hope for Octoprint functionality in the future.

Also, interesting note, those aren't just capacitors, they're legit supercaps. 5F @ 2.7V each. Pretty cool. Also also, it's interesting that the Robin E3 assigns PWR-DET to KILL_PIN (and not POWER_LOSS_PIN)...KILL_PIN is the default pin for the new-ish freeze feature afaik, and you wouldn't want that to conflict, potentially freezing movement at power loss when you want to be doing all the things you configure in this video.
@ChrisRiley
@ChrisRiley 2 жыл бұрын
I noticed that was the kill pin and that seems to be common on a lot of these configs. I might have to switch it up and do some tests.

@04:42 Be warned though that the UPS must _specifically_ be made to work with *Stepper Motors* ( most of the APC ones, at least the lower cost ones, apparently are not ) otherwise chances are good it might kill the UPS ( /cough... like mine ) or even worse the device(s) attached to it.

I like having a UPS on mine, but a thought occurred during your video... it seems so inefficient to go from DC to Mains then through the PSU (wastes a big % of what goes in) back to DC. 1 (for 12v) or 2 (for 24v) 7AHr gel-cells w/ a charge controller might be a better method. I may look into it one day 🤣.
@ChrisRiley
@ChrisRiley 2 жыл бұрын
That's a good thought, you're right, that could be an interesting setup.
@stoffel89
@stoffel89 2 жыл бұрын
thought of the same thing. my printer is 350 watt. 24v. so would that not say you are using almost 15 amps? that means you will drain the two batteries in 15min, seeing that lead acid dont like to be drained more than half of their capacity. Im just making asumptions here.
@OldCurmudgeon3DP
@OldCurmudgeon3DP 2 жыл бұрын
@@stoffel89 it won't last more than a few minutes for sure. It's more for catching flickers and short cuts than riding through long ones. Thing is, the power draw varies from a few dozen watts to hundreds depending on what the heaters are doing. Mine runs about 2.1kVA over a 24hr print. That's under a 100W average for an hour if you omit the PSU losses. Figure half the capacity of a typical UPS battery is useful.

18:40 It seems you misunderstand the purpose of POWER_LOSS_MIN_Z_CHANGE, this is only used to detecting that the printer goes to the next layer, so the current layer is saved at layer changed, it's not used at actual power loss because the active layer is already stored

Personally, I use in-line UPS like APC 1000S for short power loses and also protect printers and computers from spikes, brownouts etc. Of course the inline power UPS (110/220V AC) cannot help in case of long power lose and the UPS's internal batteries are depleted then the printer(s) will stop without any way of recovering/continuing the print. Most decent power line UPS have at least USB and more expensive models even Ethernet connectivity that reports of the state of the in-line power. Maybe someone can develop a software interface for Klipper etc. to re-act to messages from the UPS's condition.

wondering if this could be done with octoprint when it comes back on a plugin scans marlin for power loss detection if it finds it it says do you want to resume print and marlin takes over/tells octopi to print at such layer and resume with the info stored during the power loss. reason i say this is because my printers/cncs are stored in the outside shed and my area is prone to power outages so nothing i have printed/milled has been over a day long. and running octoprint/cnc.js from a raspberry pi helps tremendously.

About how long on a standard Ender-3 will you still have power during a power loss? Looking to use these for those power blips that resume power within a few seconds. Would you just have seconds of reserve power or minutes?

This capacitors btt module save seconds. Just for lift print head and time to check/read display. If you want to prevent random power loss buy cheap 400-600w ups. Save around 15-20 min for small printer like ender 3.

The way I avoid this is a $40 UPS from Wallyworld. It wont run it forever but it'll work for a while.
