Yeah, the liquid-cooled models are notorious for coolant leakage. And they can have issues even if there aren't any obvious signs of leakage, as happened with the G5 Quad I built a few years ago, which started overheating.
@WOSArchives

That was what killed my Power Mac G5, a dual CPU model (like the one Ken has), several years ago. It's really sad, because I loved that G5. I still have the side panel for it somewhere.

It's my understanding and my experience, though, that the late 2005 quad G5's liquid cooling system is more reliable than the older G5s' liquid cooling system. I had a G5 quad system fail on me, but it wasn't because of the cooling.
@TimurTripp2
@TimurTripp2 5 жыл бұрын
The assembly I got for my Quad was the single-pump one which AFAIK is the later configuration and considered the most reliable. Never saw evidence of leakage, but I can't deny the fact it was overheating when I last powered it on just over a year ago, and prior to that it was working but with CPU B running much hotter than CPU A which I thought was strange. Pump was running and sounded normal, so I never did any further investigation into why it was overheating, just swapped it out for an air-cooled 2.3 GHz model (also Late 2005).

My friend in China had his powermac g5 quadcore 2.5 GHz killed due to coolant leakage too. I got a lowest end dualcore 2.0 GHz, the model the easiest and cheapest to be found here in France. The model is quite robust, and is enough powerful for what I use it for.

I know you don't want to get the power supply out, but you will have to, or take it to a local repair shop and tell them what happened. You'll want one that specializes in component-level board repair, as if something is messed up royally, they have the skills needed to fix such things. Now if you felt like it, you could talk to Louis Rossmann about it, while he does repair MacBooks for a living, he does seem to know a bit about power supplies from stuff he's mentioned in earlier videos (like repairing audio equipment when he was young). But that's only a suggestion as Louis' shop is in New York.

You will need to re-build the Liquid Cooling System (LCS). Need new hoses, new coolant, and long T-handle hex driver to get it all out. Check Granger for the tool, under $7 and totally worthwhile. Also need new O-rings. Check online for a guide on re-building the LCS. Would make for a cool video! Then (or probably FIRST), open up the power supply to see what need fixed.

Ah yeah, the PowerMac G5. I had the misfortune of owning a Late 2004 Single Core model which as some might remember was the one that never worked properly and would just randomly freeze for no reason. Coming from a PowerMac G3 B&W it was actually quite the beast, at least when it fucking worked instead of freezing in the middle of whatever I was doing -.- That being said, I still love these machines. I even managed to get my hands on a Quad Core model a few years ago where the watercooling apparently hadn't leaked and destroyed the machine yet, but sadly I was still unable to get it to boot - my assumption is that one of the CPU modules is bad. No explosions though, so that's nice! I haven't entirely given up on these yet though, so I might still try and get another one at some point.

Ken, I recommend plugging PCs/Macs with power outlets like this: To unplug: Turn off in software, flip the switch on PSU, wait couple seconds, unplug from *WALL,* then from the computer. To plug in: Flip switch, plug the cable into PSU (not plugged into the wall YET), then plug into wall and you’re good to go. Hope this helps, because I find this to be the most safe method.

Some interesting trivia about the Apple Cinema Display. It was first introduced in 1999 at 20", then the largest LCD flatscreen monitor available for a computer (There may have been larger CRT monitors available but they would have been very heavy and bulky compared to the Cinema Display). The only downside was that the original 1999 20" Apple Cinema Display cost a whopping $4000. The 1st gen used a DVI connector. With the 2nd ten in 2000, the swished to a proprietary Apple Display Connector (ADC) which carried a DVI video, USB, and power, all via one plug. This meant it was easy to hook up a ADC-based Cinema Display to a Power Mac as it used just one connector and you got a built-in USB hub with your display but with the major downside that you couldn't hook up third-party displays to a Power Mac ADC port without a adaptor nor would a ACD monitor hook up to a PC or Non-ADC port equipped Mac without adaptor. Fortunately, the version of Cinema Display you have has a standard DVI connector as in 2004 they realized their mistake in using the proprietary ADC connector and went back to separate DVI and AC power connections as well as separate connections for built-in UISB and FireWire ports/hubs. The made the 2004 and later versions of the Cinema Displays all Wintel PC compatible. The version of ACD you have ran $1300 for the 20" and $2000 for 23" and a whopping $3300 for a 30" (The largest ACD or Apple display of any sort Apple ever offered). In 2008 they switched to LED backlighting in the Cinema Displays (sold as the LED Cinema Display) sold until 2013. The last display Apple introduced (prior to the just released Apple Pro Display), was the 27" Apple Thunderbolt Display (2011-2016) introduced alongside the LED CD and sold for three more years after the ACD was discontinued.

So this 'thing' you see at 10:06 is actually some padding that sits around or near the power supply (I haven't pulled one apart for some time, so I can't remember where exactly.) Someone has removed and/or replaced the power supply, and has not reseated the power supply properly, thus displacing the padding. This padding is not metal, but some synthetic mesh padding that is throughout PowerMac G5s and Mac Pros, probably to insulate sound or vibrations.

At 10:08 it shows that at some point the PSU had been removed and replaced incorrectly, pinching the shielded cable visible there, that is the source of the short. The leaking coolant has been there a while as shown by the accumulated grime (dust mixed with coolant to make a gooey mud). It is likely that by removing the PSU and properly reinserting it after checking for the integrity of the pinched cable the computer should boot up. Eventually there will be enough coolant loss to cause excessive throttling. After playing with it as it is you will find that these make great Hackintosh conversions, bench supports and other creative re-purposing.

Of note -- only the highest end G5 models are liquid cooled. Most use typical air cooling and very large heat sinks. That being said, oddly enough, the liquid warning is still on the inside of, I think, every single G5! The PSU is a pain to replace, to say the least. It's doable but a chore... I hope I never have to change out one in mine because oh maaaan.... that would be a very long day for me. A fun, but kind of sad, video Ken, in any case. :3

Get any other model of G5 to toy around with. The older single processor machines had air cooling, and the later dual and quad core machines had either air or superior liquid cooling that was not as likely to spring a leak. I have had G5s for about as long as G5s have existed, and while I've seen some failures, I've never had a leaky liquid-cooled model. My best one today is a late 2005 G5 (the only models with DDR2 and PCIe!) that was originally a 2.0 GHz dual core system, but I upgraded it with a 2.5 GHz module from a broken quad core system, so now it's a dual 2.5, a configuration that Apple had never originally offered.

There's a reason GM Dexcool is called Dex-kill. It eats silicon based seals alive, hence the reason it's common to have to change Low Intake Manifold gaskets on a lot of the 1996+ V6 (especially the 4.3L found in the second gen S10 Blazers) and V8 engines.

DexKill. I love it. Just wait until you see the follow-up episode. The corrosion is gonna get crazy...

I almost bought one of these at a thrift store, I'd never seen anything like it. $50, but someone bought it ahead of me. What a design!!

I love how apple put the power supply below the water cooling tank. Even worse the coolant is corrosive... They dropped a ball of lead on their feet when making this.

You could try to repair it yourself. That spark sound and the light from the power supply comes usually from a burned fuse. You could try to replace that fuse with another one with the same values. If it's socketed, good to you, if it's soldered, you must use the soldering iron. And of course, clean any liquid inside the power supply. Good luck!

Man, I'm gutted this video finished before the main event! I remember reading about those back in 2005, when my parents got our first Mac and thinking it was wild - turns out I was right! 🤣🤣

I own 2 G5's and love them. I have 1 dual core and 1 quad core both late 2005. These G5's are louder than a house fan when they are cooling. When I bought one of mine, when you turned it on it did not make the apple chime at startup. It turned out that one of the two memory cards was damaged and once I replaced it I never had a problem from it. I mainly use them for storing and backing up family pics. The safari browser still connects to some sites, but I found that tenfourfox works far better. I always loved the style, build quality and craftsmanship of the G5 and the Mac Pro.

Makes me wanna get my PowerMac's running.. I got a G5 PCIe and another G5, at least one is a dual.. One of them takes a weird big-ass 20amp IEC cable that I don't have..the other one just takes a normal cable.. Also have the big-ass 23" (that looks like a 27" or something) original apple display for it as well as 2 cinema displays (one dead, one working)..

Don't give up. There is plenty of information on how to fix LCS. Disassemble LCS and check if your processors boards still have caps around CPUs. Maybe there is a chance to clean everything up. There should be a fuse inside a power supply. MIght be worth a try. Another fun project.

30” Cinema Displays did retail for $3300 in 2004. With Inflation, that is the equivalent price of about $4500 in 2019.
