Final
Leela versus Houdini then.
Leela again seemed in control of the game and defended without any problems when she was with black and with white created some problems for Houdini but without anything much more than just applying some pressure where Houdini managed to draw eventually.
So after first 7 games were draws, last game(8) before tiebreaks, was a very sharp and double edged opening Leela decided to get into, where she played some nice speculative attacking moves trying to apply pressure to the weak Kingside so Houdini had to be very careful, even though Houdini had a very strong counterplay with 2 advanced passed Pawns on the Queenside so Leela should had that in mind too. But Houdini played 2 suboptimal moves that can maybe even characterized as mistakes or blunders, but not that obvious mistakes though and more analysis is needed as position is crazy complicated, and Leela grasped the chance to attack! The attack went great and Leela played some nice attacking Chess and she played move 31 playing fxe5 with a +3.16 score while Houdini was at +0.47 and Stockfish dev 176 threads (that was kibitzing the game) didn't see fxe5 and was preferring 31.Rf1 with +1.11. After Leela played 31.fxe5 and after 2 more moves having been played the 176 thread Stockfish jumped to +3.03 seeing indeed that Leela's move was sound and superb.
After that it was more or less over so Leela went on to win and win the final and the CUP!

As much as I like the idea of it making a joke, it probably promoted to the lowest value piece because it had already calculated it would be captured. I know it makes no difference to humans but a computer program would just know that losing a bishop is better than losing a queen.

@@SquinkyThreepwood Here's the problem, though. Chess engines value bishops more than knights. So the question becomes why did it not promote the pawn to a knight? We might come up with an explanation for that, as well. A knight has different uses compared to a bishop, a rook or a queen. In that case, maybe Houdini calculated that LcZero might not capture the knight and there would be a completely different game, possibly - somehow - to Houdini's disadvantage. I honestly don't know. It's worth thinking about, though. Was the move really a joke? Or was it product of some sort of calculation?
@TheUntamedNetwork
@TheUntamedNetwork 5 жыл бұрын
I suspect the reality is a little closer to simply a form of gambit (offer to not recapture in this case), where the bishop was the most likely to be accepted of all pieces, that wouldnt by houdini's estimates disadvantage it over have the piece needing to be recaptured.

I have a question: When Antonio says this position has never been reached before, does that mean that at that particular move number that position was not reached? i mean, can a game that has not been reached transpose into one that has right? Just asking, any feed would be great. Spectacular channel by the way.

I believe the comparison is done against position alone (regardless of the way it got there). In some of the games he mentioned that the position was in the DB but achieved via the different move order.
@MrPataraga
@MrPataraga 5 жыл бұрын
This is a great question. So yes, theoretically we can go from a unique game to one that has been seen before, this happens most often near endgames, where certain pawn configurations and other factors make it much more likely. However, transposition does happen with openings and some declined gambit lines. Short answer, yes they can do that exact thing.
@ProFac992
@ProFac992 5 жыл бұрын
Ignacio Perez Parra It means that particular position was never reached before but does not mean that on next move it would be a position that never happened before. There was a game few weeks ago in which position was new but already on the next move it was position that was found in data and was played before, but Antonio dis specified it in that case with something like “ This position is never reached before but here we have,En passant so on the next move its still as if someone just captured here” . I think that once it reaches new position it has almost to 0 chance that on few next moves it will be exact same position as some other before that in history. Otherwise Antonio would mention it like he did in his video before.

Nope - actually AlphaStar had lower average of inputs than TLO/MaNa. But i believe the unfair advantage was that it was able to play in zoomed out map - seeing everything at once. Last game was played in a mode where AlphaStar had to zoom and scroll as well - and it lost. But it also has to be said that it was not trained as much in this mode - so for the moment, the result is unconclusive.

The lower average inputs don't mean much, especially because many starcraft players just spam. The zoom was another thing. In contrary to chess, where engines just play awesome overall, in starcraft it had many weaknesses and was winning because of human intrinsic weaknesses.

As far as AlphaStar goes, while it was very impressive in its exhibition, it still was more reliant on micromanagement and super human mouse accuracy than strategic genius. While capped at the same average APM as pro starcraft players, it did not do the spam clicking that often gets the apm of progamers to where it is. This meant that during fights it spiked to 1500 APM if I recall correctly. The last caveat is that in the final live show match when AlphaStar was reading screen data instead of game state MaNa preformed quite well and actually won the game. As I said, it was an impressive showing, but personally I felt kind of robbed as it only played one match up and often played using superhuman blink micro.
@randommcranderson5155
@randommcranderson5155 5 жыл бұрын
Agreed! The controls matter less in chess. Having the background game state data vs just playing with whats on the screen is completely different too. And that mana is the one that took a game off of it, when he really isn't the strongest player...I think it wasn't quite a fair competition. You're testing computer "reflexes" vs human reflexes on kb and mouse. The APM limit wasn't realistic at all to compare the two.
@curtr.5792
@curtr.5792 5 жыл бұрын
Random Mcranderson Yeah, it certainly was interesting. I don’t think it was necessarily supposed to demonstrate that a computer can be better than a human. I’m pretty sure we all guessed as much. I think the idea was to emphasize the unique strategies that a flawless human player could execute. Could be wrong though, definitely wasn’t a perfect matchup.

I follow starcraft 2 very closely. I would have to admit that Alpha star did do a great job versus Mana. The games it played against TLO was a different story as TLO does not normally play Protoss. So it is very hard to judge that game. On the other hand Alpha Star did have an advantage the first 5 games that it played against Mana. This advantage is Alpha Star can see the entire map at once where as if you have ever played Starcraft that is not how you see the game and neither did Mana. They then fixed this issue where Alpha Star could only see the same amount of map at once as Mana can and Mana took the only game they played against each other in this manner. Liquid Mana did a great job doing an analysis of his own games if you are interested in watching it.

Deepmind the group behind Alpha rents huge blocks of processors & dedicates them solely to running the AI so it grows fast on the lines set for it, Leela was based on a much smaller system base & then supplemented by being taught on many peoples home computers hosting the program & playing games of chess with it or just leaving it running playing itself & then pulled together by the team behind it as the basis for the AI playing here.

In the current chess.com computer chess championship, there are two variants of Leela playing, Lco and Lco dev, and so technically two AIs are already playing eachother (and Lco beat the dev version). Anyhow, I doubt that Leela will win the Tcec or chess.com tourney this time around, it seems just a tad bit shy of Stockfish's level based on other match results with other engines, but it doesn't matter. Overall, every time they update both Leela and Stockfish, Leela appears to improve more than the new Stockfish, and so it's only a matter of time before she does win. I mean like really soon, in the next 1-2 tournaments. Also, Leela is now handily beating even Komodo and Houdini (at least in the chess.com tournament), not to mention drawing most games against Stockfish, which in itself is an amazing feat. But yea, Leela will be world champ soon enough.

At 17:07, why didn't Houdini capture the pawn on e4 instead of the king to f7? Seems it would have stopped the bishop to f5.

I'm curious. How does a chess engine chooses openings? I mean, if d4 is best opening, as they say (they chess engines), why don't they always go for that? In general I mean not this game particularily. Agad, keep it up, thanks for all!

current game has a ton of tension in the position but it looks like a draw, or an endless game , black's bishop pair are trapped behind white's position but also cover eachother, black's up a pawn but white can easily lock down that side with pawn & bishop, & black can't push to even reach that point because white's king infiltrating black's position will win, so white's in advantage by nature of winning being possible at all despite being behind in material but has no moves & black has nothing to do but move the king around in the center

As an attempt to make the "joke" make logical sense. Perhaps Houdini calculated the chance that Leela would capture the promoted piece would be slightly lower if it wasn't a queen. ^_^

@l00d3r
@l00d3r 5 жыл бұрын
To avoid too much repetition in games. Without book openings, the engines will only play a few openings. Forced book openings are not that terrible, as the engines play both sides. So if one of them is at a disadvantage in one game, in the next it will have the upper hand.
