The Creative Economy in 2023 has gotten much more competitive and if you’re a graphic designer it’s important that you recognize and accept that reality.
The advent of AI-aided design tools and the maturity of social media marketing has leveled the playing field so that people with just a couple years of experience are billing themselves as experts making it harder for more seasoned designers to stand out from the crowd and secure opportunities.
One of the biggest challenges creative professionals face is over-saturation in the market. So, in this video I share key power tips on how to differentiate yourself and ultimately get more clients for your freelance business or agency.

🟡 MY NOTES for Phillip VanDusen’s 2023 Graphic Design Power Tips: 1. NICHE DOWN: differentiate yourself by understanding your target market. Build a portfolio around it.
 2. DEVELOP NICHE: find the intersection between passion and strengths.
 3. MARKET RESEARCH: Consider needs and opportunities within industries.
 4. DEFINE AUDIENCE: Pick the industry, size, location, and taylor services for them.
 5. REFINE SKILLSET: Invest time in developing the skillset that your audience needs.
 6. UPDATE PORTFOLIO: focus on niche-related projects in your portfolio or do spec work.
 7. START NICHE MARKETING: Use branding and copywriting to promo that you specialize in that niche using their problems, industry language, etc.
 8. FIND AUDIENCE: Find where they hang out, leverage free social media on the platform niche hangs out, engage in conversations on posts and respond to your own posts, then once you’re familiar, shoot them a DM.
 9. OFFER A WEBINAR/WORKSHOP: Focus on case studies that prove what you do, solves the niche’s problem.
 10. NETWORKING: Build genuine relationships
 11. DIRECT OUTREACH: personalize emails and pitches
 12. POWER BALL - REFERRALS: leverage word-of-mouth and ask for client recommendations, which makes getting referrals in a niche that much easier.

What could we do to mitigate a bad situation that might happen to a niche like, for example, lack of work on the Hospitality niche due to Covid?

I like to draw or create in perspectives, mainly in isometrics and dimetrics, where would I fit in better? I wonder and would like your opinion?

I’d think that would be a great fit for drafting type niches. Think architectural, construction firms, manufacturing, and engineering. Designing for any kind of business that works in developing very technical products, parts, or solutions. Having a background in perspective drawing would be very helpful for working with those industries. I’ve done a lot of work in those areas myself over the last ten years and having the ability to take an engineer or architect’s CAD drawing and turn it into a really cool illustration or interactive 3D graphic for their website would be exceptionally valuable. Animation and video could be a good area too, but in my own experience that’s a much more saturated area. I honestly fell into this niche simply by living in Ohio where lots of engineering and manufacturing already happens and there weren’t many designers willing or capable to work in a super technical niche like that. That’s where the work was for me.

@@rachelm_curlysue Thank you very much, however, I must say that I was not very precise in my explanation, when I said that I liked to draw or create in perspectives, whether isometric or dimetric, what I really meant was that, I liked to draw in these perspectives, mixing and placing trends or graphic design styles in them, maybe creating my own design style and seeing how it fits within the design itself, so I know which areas of graphic design I fit best. In any case, I am grateful that you shared your experience and vision of the market.
