Since engines were invented, car enthusiasts have been looking to upgrade, modify and tune their vehicle to provide the best and most efficient power and 4WD’s these days are no exception.
Today, we are going to discuss the pros and cons with some of the popular power upgrades on the market and what needs to be considered if you are planning to squeeze some extra HP from your engine.
Not only are we looking at the engine, but also the upgrades, modifications and alterations that can be made to the vehicles transmission to get that power to the road.
We are also going to discuss what modifications I’ve completed on my 2014 Toyota Landcruiser 200 series and how I’ve achieved maximum efficiency from my 4.5L V8 twin turbo diesel!

As usual Nathan, very informative and well delivered 👍🏽. I’ve been running a Unichip with custom transmission tune and Richard’s lock up clutch since I bought my 200 new at start of 2019. This was installed as part of a full custom build by PDP in Perth. Simon and Travis spent a lot of time on the dyno making adjustments to get the best performance out of each setting. I ended up with some awesome power and torque gains without compromising reliability. I was very surprised at the fuel economy to, well as long as you don’t put your foot hard into it 😂. As you rightly said, there are pro’s for and against both custom remaps and chips. It’s very important that you do you research and work out what’s best for you.

Thanks mate! Awesome, yeah the results can be impressive either way. I think the individual tuning and adjustments for each and every engine is very important! I hear you with the fuel economy, I've increase by about 0.5L, but I think that may have something to do with my modified driving style 🤔 😂

Thanks again good unbiased view. Whichever camp you are in whether chip or remap knowing who really can do it properly is the most important and probably 80% of tuners are not very good at tuning your car. I have learned that every car is different which you mention and getting a product tailor made for your car is the key.

Fantastic job as always on the comparison Nathan. Your video has confirmed in my mind which way I will go in the future with my vehicle (something similar to what you did). The problem is that being a new vehicle (yet to take delivery), 5yrs is a long time to wait for the warranty to expire 🙃

Yes an upgrade is on the cards for my 76 series. Perhaps when I start towing. Not sure if I'm sold on a remap. I'm leaning towards unichip. One question. How has fuel efficiency been affected on your 4wd? Thanks again on another informative vid. Cheers Mick
@XploringOz
@XploringOz 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Mick, glad you enjoyed it 👍 So the fuel economy increased by about 0.5 -1.0L per 100km. It was only a small increase, but this could of also been a driving style alteration to match the new power gains and V8 exhaust 😂 All the best with your 76'er.

Good YT Nathan. Have you considered installing bigger transmission coolers on your vehicle.? Once you start towing the new van, especially if you’re doing hard work it might be beneficial. I guess you can wait and see what happens with your trans temps. I found this YT interesting because I’m seriously considering doing an auto conversion on the Troopy when it arrives. I was going to do that with the torque lockup kit and as I obviously had no auto to start with I was going to address the cooling with hardware, while my wallet is out 😂. The auto conversion isn’t cheap but it’s cheaper than the coil conversion, so what the hell. I’m getting lazy in my old age & the idea of crawling through the tuff stuff, sand, mud, steep Rocky climbs without fiddling with a clutch really appeals. On another note, I recently bought a German sports car, it’s fitted with a Dual Clutch Auto. I’d never had a dual clutch auto before, always preferred manual but this thing shifts gears like a bat out of hell. Anyway, car is seriously quick, 0-100 in 4.4 seconds. I started reading about tunes for them (as you do 😂) & I got to go for a run in two different tuned versions of my car. HOLY SHEET, the first one was stage 2 tuned (Remap) & it’s 0-100 in low 3 seconds and the stage 3 tune (remap) one can pull 0-100 in 2.9 sec. I will tell you I’ve never laughed so much in all my life. I’m not really a speed driver (it’s been 35 years since I was last fined) but it’s a barrel of laughs on a country road, give this thing a little stab as you exit a bend & it realigns your spine 🤣. I would NOT consider a module for that, for high performance (sports) a remap is the way to go. On my old Troopy I had an expensive module Steinbauer. From memory that much more expensive than a remap. It had to be put on the dyno and it transformed the Troopy. So I’m thinking I will have to do a REMAP on the Troopy & obviously will do that once I decide to auto it or keep it as a manual. Since I was going to run 35 inch tyres I’m thinking the Remap will help with spinning the big rubber as I’m obviously not chasing fast 0-100 times with it 😂 Someone told me I should grow up & start acting my age the other day ……. Where’s the fun in that ? 👍
@XploringOz
@XploringOz 2 жыл бұрын
Hey mate, yeah I have considered a cooler, but I really don’t think I’ll need it at this stage with the trans lock up kit that I’ve installed previously. Even when I had the old caravan, as soon we had locked up that transmission, the temperature were sitting at very healthy levels. Even on a hot day, towing a heavy load, the trans temps won’t get much higher than 80 degrees. I don’t think I would get the value for money form the cooler. Auto conversion! That would be cool. There’s no doubt the auto transmission that Toyota make are a great unit, smooth, direct and reliable. Having one of these in a troopy would make it the perfect and ultimate tourer. 0-100 in 3 seconds! Would you feel the effects of that in the drivers seat 😆 What vehicle is it? Those dual clutches really are something else. I haven’t had much experience with them and they sure add another level of complexity to the vehicle, but they are effective! Yeah, there are some chips out there like the Steinbauer and the UniChip that are quite expensive and very effective at what they do. Nothing beats a tune on the dyno though, whether chip or remap. I’m not familiar with the gear ratio’s of the Troopy’s, but have you considered a change in the diff gears running the 35’s? This would defiantly offset some of the effect that the large rubber would have and bring all the ratios back to a factory setting. If you paired this with a tune, it would be a weapon on 35’s! Yeah…. Growing old is mandatory, but growing up is optional! 😂

Yeah, so fuel use went up just slightly. It only went up about 0.5L - 1.0L per 100km. Then again, its hard to say whether this has anything to do with the driving style to match the extra power and V8 exhaust 😂 The lockup kit will definitely help with some economy, but the biggest advantage is going to be reduced transmission temps. I'm getting about 15-17L/100km with my setup on the highway depending on the circumstances 👍

Howdy. Nathan, I normally agree with your reviews however in this instance I feel that you've missed the mark. For example, your review of "Chips" seems to be focused on the low end of the market which inevitably leads to a poor outcome (waste of money, lack of performance or too much performance until permanent damage results to the engine). Although there are only 2 or 3 high quality "Chips", these are the only ones which should be compared to an ECU map. Alternatively, any comparison should include 3 categories: remap, low quality chips and high quality chips. Regarding cost, a remap is actually cheaper than a high quality "chip" due to these chips also requiring a custom tune (therefore Dyno) specific to the vehicle. Pro of a High quality chip is that it is removable and the best ones offer the same tuning capabilities as a remap Vs pro of ecu remap being cheaper. Either way, an inexperienced tuner will result in a poor outcome for either a remap or high quality "chip". Thanks for the content, cheers
@XploringOz
@XploringOz 2 жыл бұрын
Hey mate, that’s all good. Like I said there are so many options out there and everyone has a different desired result from their vehicle and their thoughts on this subject.
I agree that some chips can probably get similar results when compared with the remaps, however there are soo few out there and the prices are enormous! And then there’s the tuning on top of that. The removability is definitely a huge advantage though! I agree 100% with a poor tuner will result in a poor outcome. This is something that needs to be done by a trusted technician! Thanks mate, Nathan.
