This one is a midweek special! Someone had sent in a PowerBook 100 for me to look at, Turns out the LCD is bad. However, this devolved into entropy which at least there was a relatively successful ending!

Good to know that the panel market is a total nightmare. What a mess. Great persistence!

It looks like the signal on the LCD cable is a standard Sharp DSTN protocol; I found a datasheet for a later 640x480 panel that uses the same wiring (though with a slightly different pinout), and it looks like it'd be easy to feed into something like an RGB2HDMI. Solving the mechanical issues is a different problem, and will probably be harder than converting the protocol.

It would have been pretty sweet to get a panel with new film already installed if they hadn’t messed up the angle like that.

That's the same hassle I've faced trying to replace the polarisation film on an AST bravo's Sharp brand mono DSTN panel and a T1910CS's Toshiba colour DSTN panel, the colours never come out right. I think there's some secret sauce in the polarisation film for passive matrix panels that TFT's don't have trouble with. Potentially that might be a circular polariser from testing with some old reald3d glasses. I wish there was some effort to replace passive matrix panels / translate their signals to active matrix ones but from what I've learned from Wenting Zhang's info on passive displays, it might be like trying to recover image data from a low quality jpeg or have a serious delay. The passive displays use a lot of tricks to achieve the grayscale / colour levels they use. Unless there are ways to get the controller to start outputting data into a format that TFTs use, then it's a bit easier. yyzkevin did that with the IBM PC 110 TFT mod and I've done similar with converting a Toshiba Satellite 400CS to a 400CDT. But then there are some controllers that can only run passive displays so that can't work for everything.

Well work is being done in that department, Androda has designed a functional Hosiden black and white LCD signaling to VGA converter with the Pico for the Portable, which should carry over to this thing. Now personally myself, I have not studied the timing differences between a DSTN/Passive matrix display, and an active matrix display so im not sure on that part.

i know that you just cant use tft polarisors on these B/W screens

Yes; the result seen in the video is the best that can be achieved with the polarising films that are available today. I have experimented with all angles, at least four sources of film - it’s not the angle; it’s the fact that the original film had an additional retarder layer that you can’t seem to get today. If anyone finds a source for monochrome passive-matrix LED film, please let me know.

If you have a big enough vice, you can put it in there, but you have to be gentle, but you will kind of crack the plastic a little bit. Unfortunately, a little JB will to glue it back together. Or do what I do? Just rapping on tons of electrical tape
