POWERED! Epique 7” NEW Passive Radiator Subwoofer

Жыл бұрынDayton Audio recently introduced matching passive radiators to their Epique 5 ½” and 7” subwoofer lines. This project employs the Dayton Audio Epique E180HE-44 Subwoofer and matching Epique E180HE-PR Passive Radiators along with the Dayton Audio SPA300-D 300 watt subwoofer plate amplifier in a small 11” cube. It’s a great combination!
UPDATE: Listening to "The Polar Express" with this and two small two-way speakers. I had the volume really cranked up to hear the weak dialog and forgot to turn it down during the 'runaway train' scene and I bottomed this driver out... BANG!!! Loud and scary... I jumped for the remote but there was only one noise. I bottomed out the voice coil on the back-plate. It survived... No bad noises afterwards, it seems fine and no scraping or nasty sounds pushing the cone in. I got away with one there, but just to reiterate that this Epique 7" driver is at least made pretty tough just in case someone does push it a little too far. I continue to be impressed with it.

Thank you for the comment and for watching my video. It's a VERY good performing subwoofer. I take very little credit for the design... it seemed to want this enclosure and configuration. Dayton Audio should get an award for these Epique drivers!

Interesting design. I love DIY speaker projects. and as soon as this Dayton Audio released this driver epique e180he-44 7. which has a frequency response of 25 - 3000 Hz. I thought to myself, this would be perfect for either a 2-way or 3-way speaker design by default it would save you the job or building a separate sub. at least for a medium size room. this is a very creative design. and very detailed job, glad I found your channel. Thanks

Thanks Jeb. It's a nice driver with a nice sound, I think if you were to pair it with a robust tweeter possibly in a medium sized waveguide for a lower cross point you would have a good performing compact two way speaker with full bass, no sub needed. If you haven't seen Todd's DIY Audios build using two of the 5.5 inch Epique drivers in a TWW setup, that might give you some ideas too. Thanks for watching and commenting.

I'm contemplating my first DIY speaker build to add a subwoofer to my existing Onkyo receiver to make a basic 2.1 system for watching TV, movies, and a bit of music. What are your thoughts on how it sounds watching TV and movies? I know it won't produce house-shaking bass, but I'm not really into feeling my movies. I just want something that fills out the sound a bit more. Current speakers are some cheap Pioneer SP-BS22-LR bookshelf speakers. (If this build is fun and goes well, I may replace those, too.)

@@TheEricSchubert Eric, Well, it did pretty good keeping up with the rest of the system until that one, super-low bass hit. It didn't even sound strained previous to that, which makes me a little nervous to push things too hard since I can't easily tell if it's being pushed too hard other than looking at the cone. Like I said, I had it cranking pretty good. If you're not trying to shake the house like you said and just want some nice, clean low end to supplement the rest of the soundtrack, and you can keep yourself from "overdoing" it, I would think this would work very well. And, it's pretty excellent at music on top of that. Thanks for watching and commenting!

Great post, and great minds think alike! Just made the same thing (ok, 3/4" plywood, square corners, white lacquer finish, but basically the same). Really happy with the setup in my small office with plenty of low-end room gain. Tempted to try a dual-opposing setup with the same amp at 4 ohms, a-la KEF KF92 etc. Might make it a piece of furniture.

I think these driver/PR just lend themselves to a similar setup, sounds nice! Two Epiques would be nice too, maybe two enclosures and make one a slave sub for better room integration?

I've been thinking about making a couple of subs and though I wanna go big, in the 15" range, I'd sure like to hear what this little guys can do. Just bought a pair Goldenear Triton 2's and only recently learned what kind of sound can be made with a smaller driver with class D amplification. Appreciate what you've done here and excited to start a project.

Idk why alot of forks say it plays deep enough for music..? Alot of music plays well into the low 20s... Understandable size of driver / enclouser & TS dictate what's possible. Love your builds man..! I like the approach. Simple, clean & functional..! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I currently have a couple GRS8SW4 I'm building enclousers for. 1.5cuft looks good through WINISD tuned to 22hz. I had originally wanted to build some type of horn enclouser but I think that's above my pay grade atm lol... I just don't understand the math behind it all.

Thanks for watching and commenting. You're right actually, depending on what type of music you dig, it can reach into the 30's and 20's. I don't listen to stuff with material that low, but that's just me. I should rethink that probably. GRS subwoofers are sleepers, I love the HE version in the Pint Sized Powerhouses.

@@dcuccia I use a Harbor Freight Tools speed controller to slow the speed down on the bigger bits, but I don't think they sell one anymore. I've seen them on Amazon though.

I am 44, started to build at 14 in a shop. I try to build a small subwoofer over and over, end up have 2 jld108, it have like 1.3 litre and travel like 2.5 inch or something.

Do you have info about the tiny speakers you used together with it`? I`m working on a portable sound system using 1 x 7 Epique sub + 2 radiators (same as you used in the sub)

Yes, they are called "The Bantams" and I have a full writeup here at Parts Express Tech Talk forum: techtalk.parts-express.com/forum/speaker-project-gallery/1304991-the-bantams-micro-speaker-system They have been featured in an article in AudioXpress magazine in October of 2019 as well. I'm considering doing a video on them in the future if there is any interest. They are a fantastic sounding speaker.

Nice build, I am thinking about building this. I think it will go well with my Epique Toid build. I just wonder how it may compare to an SVS pro 1000? do you think its comparable to that?

I'm sorry, I'm not familiar with the SVS pro 1000. I rarely buy retail audio products these days. But to sum up... it doesn't play 'super' low, but it does get pretty dang loud for it's size and driver compliment. Clean too!

Very nice build Tom. Really like the robust but curvy finish. I like detail so the woofers having the same pattern looks nice to! Isn't this almost the same as the e150 you build but the e150 goes even lower?

I'd say the response is pretty close on the low end between the two. Actually all the data for my 'Epique small cube subwoofer' build got lost somehow so I can't look back to it for comparison. Two drives for backup and it still disappeared! Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed it!

@@roygriend5143 Thats a good question Roy. I honestly have no idea. The last mass market subwoofer I've purchased was over 30 years ago, I've been making my own forever. This is on the pricey side since it uses the PR's, so cost-wise, it's probably no bargain, but size-wise, I think it would out-perform nearly anything out there. I don't have the funds to purchase retail subs for a comparison, but that's a great question!

Why do you think there was that large dip in the frequency response around 800 Hz? Related to the baffle dimensions possibly?

Hey sorry, I didn't see this until a few days ago for some reason. I don't know. I didn't try and get the mic in a good position, and it was VERY close to the floor, may have been the baffle or bad reflections. But either way, it doesn't exhibit that response normally. Good eye! Very nice but i have a question, would it have a negative effect in the sound if you put all 3 chassis (the woofer and the 2 passive radiator) on the front ? I mean like a tower subwoofer? Because it would fit really good in my room (sorry for my bad English im from germany)

A tower sub should be fine. I built the cube to keep things as small as possible. That would be an interesting look!

Love to see a passive with 2 active opposing subs and 4 passive radiators....all of 6 sides firing. maybe an up and down firing box with tall feet all 4 sides with passives. Maybe use the 5.25 epiques and see how small and crazy powerful it could be.

That would look cool. I've modeled the matching PR's but they don't dig very deep. Also due to the sheer size of the magnet on the drivers, the size of the box would need to be kind if large. I like the idea, though. Plus you could do a 4 ohm setup as well. Thanks for watching and commenting!

This little sub looks awesome! How would it sound in a car if the goal isn't earth shattering deafening base, but rather something that packs a solid little punch, plays decently low for the size and sounds good?

I imagine this would do really good in a auto environment. Since it doesn't go super low on its own, cabin gain would bring up the low end really well.

Hey James. This sub is tuned to around 30 Hz with an F3 of around 43 Hz.

Thank you. I’m your build, how much added weight did you need to achieve that result? I’m using two epique 7” drivers and 4 matching passive radiators with 60g of weight each. I have a bump in freq response at 90hz. I’m going to play around with adding mass to see how much I can lower that bump.

If you were pushing this combo only up to 80db at 8 ft and were looking for the lowest f3 possible, how low do you figure that would be? I'm looking to do the same as you did but in a 15x13x10 box with an external amp, the two PR's pointing forwards and the driver pointing down. Thanks a ton.

It would be hard to say without modeling it... I think low 30's is possible.. it just depends on how close you are willing to go towards the ragged edge of its excursion capabilities. The absolute LOWEST F3 would over-excurse at very low volumes, so you have to model it to pick and choose your trade-offs. Thanks for watching!

Hello, I would like to know if I can do the same with a 15-inch one and if I can use a group of small radiators or if I should use one of the same size as the bass. It is a bass, not a Subwoofer

As a rule (and this is not set in stone) you would like to have either double the cone area, or double the excursion for the same cone area as the active driver. I'd imagine a 15" woofer may need a whole bunch of these PR's which would really be costly. It may be able to be done, but it's an expensive way to get there.

What do you think one of the 5.5's with one 7" radiators would sound like in about a .25cf sealed box? It would be replacing the factory subwoofer in my car. 85w to each coil.

It sounds like a decent idea, I think a 7" PR will work decently with the 5" Epique driver, though I have not modeled it. .25 cu. ft sounds a touch small, though. Have you modeled it in WinISD or a similar program yet? In a car, you wouldn't need super low extension, though, low 50's to high 40's would be actually good, cabin gain will get you the rest of the way there.

I havent modeled it. I can build a box, what size would you suggest? There will be a 7" epique in each door as well. Small hatchback car, i think it should do ok.

Neither really, the Epique PRs are not designed to get very low with the Epique drivers.

Just wondering why you wired at 8ohms? Isn’t this amp rated at 4ohms? As well as the sub? Was gonna build this sub so just wondering as I’ve never built anything like this before. Thanks!

The sub has dual 4 ohm coils and just using one coil required a slightly larger box in my modeling. The amp has plenty of power for this setup. Thanks for the comment!

What would you charge me to build just the box, without the plate amp and without the routing on the edges? I plan to use in my car and will apply my own cabinet coating. I live in Orange CA 92869.

Hey Tim... unfortunately, shipping costs are so high it wouldn't make sense. The cost just for shipping is over $60. I'm in New Jersey, so it's got to travel pretty much the whole width of the country, so that doesn't help. I appreciate the thought, but you'd probably be much better with a local builder/fabrication shop. Probably a reputable car stereo shop that does custom work, or search somehow for local custom fabricators in your area. I'd give them dimensions and then provide them with maybe one PR to get sizes and depth from for flush mounting. Good luck!

Check this flatpack box out from PE designed to use that same driver: www.parts-express.com/Passive-Dayton-Audio-Epique-7-Mini-Subwoofer-Kit-300-7324?quantity=1 it is smaller, only 10" as opposed to my 11", but it should perform similarly. The F3 is within 2 Hz between the two of them, around 45 Hz or so. You would just need to cut out two openings for the two PR's. of course, they would not be recessed, but if that's not a deal-breaker for you, it's an option. Glue and some tape is all you need to put a flatpack together. Good luck!

Not exactly... that's my own 'array' which uses 8 Dayton Audio TCP-115 woofers and one DA reference series tweeter per cabinet. Still under construction/design. That will be awhile, but here is a teaser video with the woofers: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bb2aZrBlzc2cpIE.html
