It's a shame they never teach us this in school about how much us homosexuals had too go through too get what we have today. Many people think LGBTQ is just some new bs but no we have been around for thousands of years. Yes we are still fighting and yes there is still homophobia sadly, but I will forever love and respect all of these people for what they did! ☺️💗🤝👬👭🏳️‍🌈

Thank you for that riches of gay history! Even though I'm Canadian, I was aware of much of the evolution of homosexuality in America. Our history in Canada parallels yours, to some degree. Our "Stonewall" was the Bathhouse Raids of 1981, in Toronto, which galvanized the entire gay community into marching on the local police station the next night, setting it on fire and destroying a number of police cars. I grew up in the 1950's, when male and female roles were clearly defined. Throughout my childhood and youth l never heard or saw one word or image of "that kind of person". Your comment that "you can't be what you can't see", describes my younger years. I eventually realized that l must be true to myself. I've been so fortunate to have met a community of men who are supportive of being who you are. I've lived a wonderful life, full of joy and surprises. Thank you again for you important work!❤❤

Hey there, I love your video a lot. When you mentioned comics at 19:33 , I felt so angry by that German Psychologist saying that Batman and Robin were a gay couple. Head of Wayne Inc and other Wayne companies Bruce Wayne had his parents killed in an alleyway by Joe Chill (a common crook) and Bruce decided to go years of training to become Batman. Bruce Wayne was at the circus watching a family of talented acrobats called the flying Grayson's. It had the father (John Grayson), the Mother (Mary Grayson), and the son (Richard "Dick" Grayson). Their rope was messed with by Tony Zucco (a mobster) which caused the parents to fall to their death. Bruce saw himself in the young Grayson and so adopted him and they would soon become Batman and Robin. They are not a gay couple, they are a father and son duo. If the psychologist read the comics while doing his research, then he would know better then to say that Batman and Robin are a gay couple. Dick was 12 and Bruce was 27. Batman may not be the best moral person with him getting a 12 year old to fight dangerous criminals, but he isn't a Chris Hanson special guest. I love your video but man that guy was dumb.

As a gay guy in New York in the 1970s, I can promise you that no-one overlooked Marsha -- she was 'the mayor of Christopher Street". Everyone knew who she was. The story that she "threw the first brick" first appeared in the 2000s. And Silvia was NOT white - she was all latina and proud of it. I've gotten used to learning quite late in life about little-known & undertaught details across many events in history. But only just finding out that queer people were held for an additional 15+years after the liberation of others from concentration camps is egregious. It infuriates & saddens me that this isn't included when convering WW11. I feel cheated out of knowing my heritage, of the history of my people. As a woman, I KNOW I stand on the shoulders of those that came before me, that the life I am privileged to have and rights I'm free to exercise are only possible due to the blood, sweat & tears of women's rights advocates & women throughout time. I can't give tribute to those LGBTQ pioneers if I don't know their stories.

How the hell do u know who is gay or not in the military or anywhere for that matter?
@PoweredByRainbows
@PoweredByRainbows Жыл бұрын
Back then the military threw people out in the lavender scare if they even thought someone was gay without any evidence. Other times, they caught military people in the act because remember, you’re stationed with tons of other guys for months at a time so things are bound to happen in the barracks. So they found out or just accused people. Nowadays we have to have actual evidence to prove someone was gay from back then but back in those days, if anyone accused you of being gay in the lavender scare, they threw you out of the government no matter what.

I know, we REALLY tried to cover as much as we possibly could. To be honest, as difficult as it is to find reliable information about gay and trans history (and trust our research team on this who worked throughout the entire month of August finding these 31 facts), it's even more difficult to find any history facts about bisexual people. I don't know why the world tries to erase LGBTQ from its history but it seems that bisexual people are yet again disproportionately affected and I don't know why. But I promise you that we tried our best to find history relating to the whole community. It wasn't that we purposely or unintentionally left bisexual history out. It was just near impossible to find reliable history facts.

@@PoweredByRainbows Part of this is that in the early gay liberation days, 'gay' was much more of an umbrella term (like 'queer' has become) - so lots of bi people would self-identify as gay in the 60s and 70s.

Being bi does not mean you have many visible partners for others to know and asduming people to be faithful in general even if a persom in such time is to be bi, you won't necessarily find them having multiple partners of different genders to know that.

I shuddered hearing you misname the famous Prussian General Baron Friedrich Wilhelm von Steuben, it's considered very rude to name someone only by their Title, which was "Baron" you referred to him only as "Baron" as if it was his name not his honorific title. That would be as rude as you referring to Queen Victoria as "queen" and not "The Queen" so had you said "The Baron" it would have been alright and not disrespectful. However, every single time you called Baron von Steuben "baron" you took all his honorifics and honor from him. And that is sad because he was one of the greatest homosexuals in the Revolutionary War and he led Washington to Victory. In your research in the future if you see a word capitalized at the start of a name, check that is not a Title. Baron Friedrich Wilhelm von Steuben is a historical hero and should be treated with honor. Small fun fact, he died in 1794 in Steuben NY, named after him.

We meant him no disrespect and at the time of recording this 2 years ago, I sadly thought Baron was his first name. I should have realized and that is noted on the episode that clip comes from. Sadly that was after it was published. It is interesting to know he died in a town named after him so thank you for sharing.

@@PoweredByRainbows I'm a Historian and Classicist in Ancient Roman History and spent many years on 17th to 19th Century France, England and American History, and my Professors over the years would dock me points for not capitalizing Honorifics/Titles, so it it hit me hard. Have you ever done a History segment dealing with LGBTQIA+ Weimar and pre-Nazi Germany culture? I live on the same street as the 1920s El Dorado club which was home to the most famous and brilliant LGBT personages including Christopher Isherwood (who lived around the corner) and was frequented by Zarah Leander and Marlene Dietrich before it was raided by the Nazis in 1933, where they deported all the LGBTs to Concentration Camps, or Extermination Camps. What is never explained is that after the war, the persecution of gays didn't stop and they remained incarcerated or on sex offender lists until §175 (Paragraph 175) was repealed in the late 1990s. Many Germans sent to prison camps for being homosexual died still under the original anti-homosexual laws of the Weimar Republic (Kaiser Wilhelm, pre-Hitler). There's a very rich history of homosexuality and homosexual heroes here in Europe your viewers may be interested in. We have a very incredible gay history museum called the "Schwules Museum" here and I've given talks there over the last decade. I'd love to help you with researching if you are interested. If you've already done a video, please point me to it. I do enjoy your videos, keep up the good work. Lots of love from Berlin-Schöneberg, Berlin's historical gayborhood. 🇩🇪🏳️‍🌈

Good overview. But when it comes to international history, it raises eyebrows. For example, Baron Friedrich von Steuben was A baron, not called Baron. The story about gay prisoners after 1945 is not very accurate. This sloppiness and not understanding of non-American things undermines the quality of the video.

Sally Ride was famously a very private, reticent person. This is said to be due, in part, to her Noregian heritage. It is certainly up to each person to decide what personal info to share, and when. She also declined to answer the question, "How does it feel to be the first woman in space?" To her, personal was just that-personal. Yes, she is a role model in science and education. She, with her partner, founded Sally Ride Science, which furthers scientific study.

It is sorrowful to think anyone, gay or any other person, should feel baseless hatred, much less internalize it. I hope that people in the LGBTQ community know countless people absolutely stand beside them, not in front of, and bear best wishes, no ill will.
