This is a powerful prefomance and tragic story. Johnny and Lara were perfect for this. It took a lot of guts to do something like this, and shows how professional these two were. Unfortunately, Johnny passed away a few years ago😢

Ok I will try to give the full context: • Johnny : The most admired singer in France from early 60s to 2017 when he died. He is the Elvis of France, sold more than 110M records WW. His concerts were huge! To give you an idea on how big he was in the french music history, just 3 anecdotes: 1. As a teenager, he was mentored by Edith Piaf and Charles Aznavour themselves ! 2. He was the first one who gave his chance to a young guitarist and his band, as a supporting act to his concerts during his 1966 tour. Name of the band: the Jimi Hendrix Experience! 3. When he died in 2017, there were national funerals, with hundred of bikers on the Champs-Elysees, 1 million people long the path of the funeral procession. And this song was played when the coffin penetrated in the church. Johnny was a real vocal powerhouse, but for this concert , in this last night, best perf, the mics were balanced in favor of Lara: he wanted her to shine and found this gave more drama to the duet. • The song: this is an anthem song for him, that he used to sing alone. This was turned into a duet for Lara. The story of the song was created in reference to a very famous old french classic movie: Le Jour se Leve (1939) where the main character is barricaded and surrounded by the police, having killed a bad man who was his rival in love affairs. Here it becomes more a « Bonnie and Clyde » scene where the main character and her girlfriend are defying the police. • The venue/event: Johnny’s concerts in Stade de France ( biggest stadium in Paris and France) in front of min 80,000. Lara was one of the surprise special guest. They were supposed to perform it 3 times in a row on September 1998 (4th, 5th and 6th). The first night on the 4th, it was deluge of rain, the scene was outdoor, it was risky and they decided at the last minute, with the crowd in the stadium, to postpone it to Sep 11th . Johnny was devastated. The second night and the third night the weather was fine enough. There were 200+ musicians and 150+ chorists on stage. The orchestra and choir setup was amazing, the choir especially which was distributed on huge stairs climbing to the sky. But the night of 11th, the rain was here again. Johnny absolutely refused to cancel this time. This is this Sep 11th show that you just watched and the rein just added some dramatic effect to the whole performance. The orchestra was located under a tent. The choir was grouped on the floor and on some balconies (not on stairs anymore obviously) • Lara: she was at the beginning of her career in France and this performance became legendary and accelerated her fame there. She was just starting to be known in France when, in February 1998, she performed this song in duet with Johnny for Les Enfoires, the most attended France TV Show of each year. Johnny was so surprised and amazed by Lara performance that he decided to do this song again as a duet with her for the 3 big concerts a few months later. In between February and September, the album Pure from Lara had become an absolute mega hit in France, and Lara was already a star. But this live performance where she performs as a surprise guest definitely extended her fame and she got new fans across the entire country. This duet has become legendary and iconic in France, there is still at least one TV show every month coming back on this duet and exposing the behind-the-scenes moments.

Thank you so much, Eric for saving the context for this moment! The biggest surprise for me are Johnny's mentors as a teenager. What a start! Also, him giving a shot to Hendrix, and later on Lara in her beginnings in France. All of this is very interesting information. Thank you again! 💕

@@AleksReacts another sponsor for him was Line Renaud, a famous singer in France. She was the lead performer in some Las Vegas Casinos in the 50s/60s. It has long been well-known that Charles Aznavour wrote one of Johnny’s early successes (retiens la nuit) and that Johnny’s agent was Charles’ brother-in-law, but we only discovered recently, after Charles’ death, that Johnny has lived during 2 years in Charles’ property. Charles didn’t want this to be known as he wanted to escape malicious rumors that it may have triggered.

I'm so glad you got to see, hear, and enjoy Lara in her kick-ass mode. Aren't her wordless belts magnificent? Johnny said Lara was the only woman crazily intense enough for this duet. "She is me as a woman. She gives her all to tell a story and does not give a damn what she looks like when she does so." The English translation is off at one point. It's "My life was his heart, his body" (coeur = heart and corps = body sound a bit similar hence the mistranslation). You've now reacted to two of Lara's three favorite performances ("Je t'aime" where the audience sings is her absolute favorite). The remaining one, "Tu es mon autre," is also a duet, sung with Lara's dear friend and famed Belgian singer Maurane (sadly deceased). It's a chance to see yet another side of Lara.
@AleksReacts
@AleksReacts 15 күн бұрын
Why should she give a damn what she looks like? The woman always looks perfect. 🤣 Yeah, I wasn't sure if she meant heart or body either, but she is touching his body (again, near to the heart), so... still not sure. As for Tu Es Mon Autre, I wrote down your suggestion on July 9th for that one, along with 5 others you suggested. 😊 One at a time, I'll get to as many as possible. Easy does it. 😉

@@AleksReacts Lara is extraordinarily beautiful, of course, but she is not self-consciously beautiful, and I think Johny meant that she has no inhibitions about adopting less than beautiful facial expressions or body postures if the song demands it. For example, One sees her hunch over quite frequently. Or the unusual side jerks near the end of "Adagio". Or her downturned mouth when she sings "I will give you my life" in this song or "I am like a dead bird" in "Je suis malade". Some singers prefer to look like placid fashion models at all times. Not Lara. There was a time when French critics mercilessly mocked her for shouting, grimacing, and waving her arms about. It's both body and heart in the line I quoted. The full verse is "My heaven was his eyes, his mouth. My life was his body (corps), his heart (coeur)." Best wishes.
@AleksReacts
@AleksReacts 15 күн бұрын
Actually, everything you listed is why I find her to be beautiful! Precisely because it's natural and that downturned mouth in Je suis malade and Caruso is what I found so attractive about her. Ah, both body and heart - thank you so much for that! Kept me wondering for a while now.

Dear Aleks, I knew you would like it. It put a smile on your face. Johnny was a gentleman, he put his miicrophone on 70% to let Lara, who weas becoming famous at that time, shine. And she did shine. It was a rockopera, but with a lot of intimate moments. Lara told later that the fysical aspect made her less nervous, by holding on to Johnny, she was calm to perform for the 80.000 in the poutring rain. Again, glad you reacted to this. I listen to this song a lot. But now and again I watch it, one of the great duets Lara did. The other one is with Maurane: Tu es mon autre. It is a real contrast with this one. So please, put it on your list. Have a good weekend. And thank you again.

Epic! The orchestra with all the string instruments in unison and the wonderful choirs, make you foreshadow everything that is going to happen. Requiem for a madman; I don't know if a madman because of dementia or because of passionate love... in any case in a ceremony of honor for death. The duo performs this song in a masterful way; the body language of the two making the perfect counterpoint, Lara's incredible rock voice, even more dramatic than what she is used to, I liked the way they caress and hug each other... one in particularly when she holds them in her arms like a "Piedad". All of this soaked by a rain that adds another point of drama. Johnny Hollyday is a legend in France. He seemed like the perfect couple to stage this piece; as you pointed out very well, it looks like a Rock opera. Thank you very much for contributing your point of view. Excellent reaction!

@@AleksReacts I'm not nostalgic for old artists even if I don't see much new around in terms of words, arrangements, interpretation or great productions. Times change and we adapt to the needs of the recording market but, although I am not a great fan of pop music (with a few exceptions), if you also remove the emotions from a song or a performance, what remains? 😴
@AleksReacts
@AleksReacts 24 күн бұрын
I am in fact nostalgic, and I can get obsessed with a single song and listen to it over and over again. New songs rarely do that for me, mainly because of the same reasons you mentioned. So, I am actually very glad that I'm not being asked to react to "cookie cutter" music that's prevalent today. I was merely trying to say that some new artists have surprised me in a very positive way, or rather they were able to bring emotions back into the music, which I agree with you is rather lacking these days in what's probably the most popular music.

@@AleksReacts Another reason why I love Diana Ankudinova! With her vocal range her performances can so varied. Like you I don't find many redeeming qualities in much of todays pop music. I get into discussions about this with friends and I always say that I don't have any issues with so many pop stars, I just want them to be honest with themselves about what they are. Great entertainers, most of them. The costumes, pyrotechnics and lighting, but can can I bring out a piano and regular microphone and have them vocalize? A month and a half ago I went to see Renee Fleming and despite being an older gent, when she began O'mio bambino caro I got a lump in my throat from the beauty of her voice. That is the power of a singer!

❤ I heard everything you explained, but I don't know how to put it to words, not being musically educated myself. One thing that my ears are trained to hear is diction and Lara's is always on point. It is impossible not to understand her, be it in English, Italian or French (that's what I've heard from her so far). Many singers neglect the relevance of actually understanding the lyrics, but Lara has never done that and her renditions are always both gorgeous musically and the lyrics cannot be missed. It is one of the things I value about her. As far as her singing, I can feel everything you're saying when she's singing and simply trying to replicate it tells one how hard it is to do, but she makes it seem easy. A true artist if there ever was one. ❤

Ti voglio consigliare tre canzoni in cui canta in spagnolo😊: Quédate (from Lara with love). Llora (live in Kremlin 2014).

I very much agree with you that bel canto is almost entirely neglected. It's not about how high/low you CAN sing, it's about whether one's abilities make for beautiful performance to enjoy. I've noted all the suggestions and since you're not the only one suggesting them I will be sure to get to these songs in Lara's repertoire. Thank you so much again - it IS a pleasure not only to listen to her, but also discuss singers we enjoy. ❤

Excellent reaction, Aleks, but are you okay, hun? Bc, I don’t know, you seemed a bit overwhelmed and this iconic performance usually causes some serious side effects on people. Actually, rumour has it that it led to 3 major consequences: 1- Lara conquered France for once and for all. 2- Johnny’s left ear had never fully recovered from such impact. 3- Johnny’s wife had never let him go up on stage with Lara again. Well, I’m quite sure the first one is absolutely true. I guess the second is totes possible. And I think the third one to be rather justifiable, I mean, based on what we have just seen, who on earth could possibly blame the poor woman? 🤷🏻‍♀️

Thank you! Glad you liked this one. 😂😂😂 I am totally ok, I actually just went ahead and immersed myself into this one and boy, was that rewarding. All the consequences make absolute sense, especially No. 3 🤣 I know I'd have a rolling pin ready if I saw my husband like that with another woman. 😉

Hey, Aleks! Really missing you and your Lara reactions, although knowing that you have other singers to react to. Anyway, although also knowing that your spreadsheet must be already full, I’m gonna leave three other suggestions here, ooops 4…. bc I don’t want to forget making them and I hope that one day you’ll be able to get to them. They’re all so beautiful: “Aime” with full orchestra: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/l9CCddSl0qrZdGQ.htmlsi=Kgej6wNXBdQaF03h “Un Ave Maria”. This song is so peaceful. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/eNmTZM1lrNKWgJc.htmlsi=8qd1JLRBOO0m2d5l “La Lettre” from her “Un Regard 9” concert. You can quit this vid at 4:00… After that she’s just going to thank the band. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mquVgL2rvJaVaYE.htmlsi=ouANd_jZFHQJNPJM And “Hushat Ha Eucalyptus” , a literal angel singing in Hebrew. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/n5OnpbKLy5etf3k.htmlsi=ZnQt_uTO3MCNpjJI BTW, Hauser has recently posted his duet with Lara of “Caruso” and it’s stunning to say the least. As you already reacted to this song, but I know how much you love it, maybe you’ll just want to watch it. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pJyTfdRhr9DdqWw.htmlsi=Yj90vRib2i08cyfA Although a double reaction with their performance of “Adagio” would be amazing, but I know I can’t ask for that… 🫣

Thank you for that! It feels good to hear that you're missed. First some good news: Lara is coming up this Friday, so very soon a new reaction will show up in your KZfaq home feed. I won't tell you which one yet. Of course, you know I can't promise when I will get to these recommendations, but I keep adding to the list and do not plan to give up on Lara anytime soon, so we should have time for almost all of them... Truth be told, I don't remember if you checked out my first reaction to Aurora, but might as well mention that while you're waiting for Lara, Aurora's Runaway is coming up on Wednesday. Both @ericsicard910 and I seem to, so I'm guessing it might be to your taste as well.

@@AleksReacts Oh! I’m gonna check her out. I admit I haven’t checked anything for her yet, but if you and Eric like her, there’s a good chance for me to like her as well. 🤗 And don’t fret, I’m just giving you more suggestions without creating any expectations, although I’m already anxious for Friday. 🙌🏻

Based on the first song I heard - me like. That's why went for the second. And guess what? I liked that one even more. So, yes, I strongly suggest checking her out (with or without me). I am not worried at all, I also write things down not to forget. That's why I didn't reply for a couple of hours to your comment. Saw it, but needed to be at my computer to ensure I write the recommendations down before the comments gets lost. If I don't reply it stays on top. 😀 The best thing is we can keep listening to Lara together for years to come. Lord knows she has more than enough material and we're still young(ish) 😉

@@AleksReacts When you have the time, go check this very recent Lara interview out. It’s a quite long one, but it’s fantastic. Lara is such an amazing human being! Don’t worry, there is no singing here, but her voice, even when she’s just talking, is so soothing. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/oNqPlcaFsN-0iZc.htmlsi=u6QKBnwkbHoVfOlZ
