I reckon you could make a video of paint drying and it would still be interesting. Much better than anything that's on the telly that's worth watching.

Well...how did the car get through years of testing and nobody lost anything down in that gap??? Astonishing. The Freelander has a similar problem in that if you leave something slippery (like a garage door opener..clue!) in the cubby hole in front of the gear sector, if it fires backwards and slides off the side, it can vanish into a deep hole by the seat supports. I took ages with a magnetic probe to get it back out again grabbing the key ring that by luck is on the top of the sender unit. Loose anything non magnetic and it is gone forever!! Next job...design a filler panel to stop it happening!!! Good work as always men! Richard 😀😀😀😀

Thanks for this. It's just reminded me to order one for my new Disco Sport, as I find the fold out cloth piece on my BMW 3 series Touring very handy for providing a clean area on a dirty bumper to park my bum when putting on walking boots etc.

I fitted one of these at the weekend. I could have saved myself hours if I’d seen these detailed instructions beforehand 👍😂 All good fun but I couldn’t really concentrate on the video because I was worried about your phone. In all seriousness, you have a different problem with a 7 seat version. Access is easy to the under seat area and it’s all nicely finished. In fact, when you buy the rubber mat set, they even give you an extra piece of rubber for the 3rd row footwell. That’s a first. However, because the 2nd row slides forward, you have the opportunity to create a proper chasm at the back of the boot. I can ‘store’ all sorts of things down there - some of which I even intended to put there.

You might call that a design floor...

I use a sheet of tarpaulin in my boot with some velco stickers to hold it up against the back of the seats and around the sides.

Where you lost your phone is the place your feet would be if you were sitting in the 3rd row. On models with the 3rd row, the second row seats slide forward quite a bit and nothing could get lost. Also, on the models with 3rd row the under cargo area has no storage except for tire changing tools. When the seats fold flat they take up all that extra space underneath.

I wonder if you removed the foam block under this, and did a little cutting of the rubber mat around the air compressor, if you could actually use this mat to line the area below and increase storage. The foam seems like a giant waste of space.

Really interesting showing these real-world shortcomings of the design. I bet the designers are kicking themselves that they didn’t bring you in a year ago for a couple of weeks’ consultancy.

@powerfulukltd Any ideas for the PHEV boot please? Apparently the mat shown in the video is not compatible with the PHEV Defender as the boot floor is raised slightly 🤷‍♂️

I use a large blue plastic sheet, front end and sides folded up against the boot sides and rear seats, and tied to the rear seat headrests

Maybe you can block the holes by fitting the two back seats. But seeing this issue upsets me. Its so stupid.

Those holes require a child to stick their arm through! Can you imagine the stuff that would be down there in a 20 year old model?

Could you buy thin foam pipe insulation? You could cut it to create a bumper between the seat and the trunk.

They’ve got the nerve to produce one and effing sell it to you. The landrover lineage cord was well and truly cut in 2015. Again no offence, but it’s obviously me. I was impressed with new defender until i realised how much plastic body panels were in use !!- a big disappointment as its cheaper to make but twice the price of old Defender !!, sounds a bit like a Piss Take !!!!!!!!!!
