In this video we make sure we know where the tools are and the correct process for changing the spare wheel on our Land Rover Defender 2020. We got Tyler to do this as had not changed a spare wheel before or used a scissor jack so that it should be a good guide for a novice.

Safety tip: On removing the punctured wheel it is good safety practice to temporarily slide it half under the side of the car just in case of a jack failure until the replacement wheel is fitted. Another great infovid

Love the videos so much and how you do things exactly the way most of us would in the real world, not editing out mistakes , but showing how mistakes can and will be made. Much better than the "sterile" videos of people with experience going from beginning to end with everything perfect . It's all very good watching those type of "how to" videos, but there are pitfalls for people who have little or no experience of even basic stuff - like changing a spare wheel. I remember trying to pull the wheel brace up to loosen the wheel nuts on my first Land Rover 30 odd years ago and nearly giving myself a hernia - until someone pointed out that pushing down and using gravity was the way to go. Simple things like this really do help a complete novice. That alignment tool - what a great piece of kit. As others have stated, please get these in stock, Simon. I've just ordered the airbag removal tools from you the other day. I bought a 2013 facelift steering wheel last year , plus a conversion for the switchgear so it can be fitted to a 2007 model.Bloody expensive ! It's been sat up the shed for ages. I've finally decided to fit it. I saw your airbag removal video ages ago and as I'm really bored in lockdown, finally decided to do the job. Can't wait for the tools to arrive. Regards. Ian

This is a thing everyone that is going to drive the vehicle should do before ever using the vehicle, if only to familiarise yourself with where the tools are. The extended wheel stud is a thing I have made up for the past 20 years for all of my vehicles, they are essential for the awful modern car wheel bolt type as you cannot locate the hole to insert the wheel bolt, with a slave stud it makes the job easy, not so bad with the proper wheel studs on a Land Rover of course, but for the spare it is very useful, I doubt that few females would be able to lift the spare off the back door though, (or I would not like to meet them on a dark night if they could). It is good that you were able to lift the vehicle enough with the jack, given that you were parked a lot higher that the road under your jacking point! Thanks for posting , stay safe! Chris B.

Just a quick one on locking wheel nuts, theyre usually alot weaker than the standard ones so its always worth removing them FIRST so there isnt any additional pressure on them causing it to strip, i usually remove the nut completely before starting on the others

To lock the steering wheel, ensure wheels and steering is dead center, then switch car off and turn steering to the right, past the half way mark ( 6 o clock) and it will lock ( Audible click). to release, pull to right past half way with foot on the brake. start car and release steering and lock is off. I used similar procedure on my Discovery Sport 2018 and it worked well.

For safety purpose, you should always put the wheel you took off underneath the car, as close as possible to the jack, while you put in the spare. In case the jack fails or slips, the car will rest on top of the wheel.

Very useful tip about cross balancing the valve and the locking wheel nut. On a separate note do you know of the delay in getting the accessories for the Defender. Our Defender has been sat at the dealer for 2 weeks now waiting for the Country Pack and a couple of other options we ordered back in October and the dealer hasn't a clue when they will come so we just have to wait on the JLR parts department getting the back orders sorted.

I think Craig has OCD but sadly for me, I agree with having the Land Rover logo straight on the spare wheel, not so sure about valve and locking wheel nut though, especially if it's dark, raining and freezing, all you'd want to do is get the job done and back in the car

They are called 'wheel hangers' or 'pins' which will hold the rim centred on the hub and take the weight while you hand screw in the wheel bolts. Laser have a 5-piece set (6483) including the most common sizes although they are for hubs without studs so won't fit the Defender: www.machinemart.co.uk/p/laser-6483-5-piece-wheel-hanger-set/ but these are quite expensive. You can get a plastic one from VW which does the job but note they call them 'tommy bars': www.partshaus.co.uk/collections/audi-accessories/products/vw-audi-skoda-seat-tommy-bar-disc-and-wheel-alignment-tool-893012223

Aligning the air valve with the clock nut does nothing for dynamic wheel balance as wheels are balanced off the car with no wheel nuts fitted. That’s just an ocd thing gong on. I mean, it’s night, raining and out in the sticks. Wheel gets swapped ASAP, bugger lining up badges and wheel nuts.

Simon...I was looking at the new Launch Edition today being prepared as a Demonstrator. It is very different to the Disc 5 and will be a success but one accessory needed quickly is a spare wheel cover ...a hard case version rather than soft might be good...left bare. It looks just a bit vulnerable. I think they need a tow bar to look right I’m not sold on the plastic lunch box that fits on the side which thankfully, you haven’t got!
