If you plan on going off road in your Land Rover Defender and getting it dirty then this video could be useful when you come to wash your car afterwards ! There is a secret way to activate "radiator wash mode" and this opens the active grille vanes that are infront of the radiator to allow you to wash the radiator. Please take care when using a pressure washer not to damage the radiator fins !

If the rad matrix is covered in mud, ideally it should be washed out from the fan side. I've seen some rads that superficially looked clean but the fins were actually hard packed deep into the core with dried dirt. This severely hampered engine cooling, intercooler and transmission cooling and, depending on the layering of radiators, the complete failure of the air conditioning as well.

Good work again Simon. This idea of washing the radiator from the back made me think of my underbody lance that I use for power washing the underside free of salt etc. It is a cranked steel tube with fan spray nozzle that connect to the Lance on my Nilfisk washer. I wonder if something similar but used at much lower power could work from the engine side. It is perfect for mud and salt anyway! Another thing for you to invent!! 😃😃😃Richard.

Hiya this just an observation and experience from cleaning mud plastered motorcross bikes Surely the direction of jetting water needs to be from engine side out to the front through the back of the rad. Jetting from the front is going to force / push stones and all the crap deeper into the fins.
@hedydd2
@hedydd2 3 жыл бұрын
Precisely. Except that everything is so enclosed these days, mainly to save cats lives [yes really] that it is exceptionally difficult to near the back of the rad, much less aim a jet methodically over the majority of its surface area.

Simon, would you be able to comment on the issue of the jet engine like roar coming from the operation of the cooling fan in the radiator of my 2024 Defender 110 2.0L 4 Cylinder Turbo? Runs for 1-3 minutes after engine shut off every time, extremely loud. I assume this is normal, just cooling down the turbo, but I have never heard anything like this on any vehicle. Forums and dealership seem to think this is "probably" normal, but nobody seems to know for sure. Thanks!

There are apps for smartphones that work off a bluetooth sender connected to the OBD-2 test socket that enable just that. There are also devices to hold the phone and project its display on to the windscreen, rather than reading directly off the phone placed in a simple holder. So you could use it as a performance monitor or for sat-nav

While I'm in a whiney frame of mind, what I really don't like on off-road or rough road vehicles is the habit of siting intercoolers down low in front of the front wheels, with vents or slats allowing warmed air out through the wheel arch liner. Firstly the intercoolers get covered in rubbish because they are low down [on some V engines there is one on each side], but the worse thing is that the sh1t that is thrown off the tyres sticks to the wheel arch liners and blocks the air exit slots. Power hosing inevitably washes muck into the cavity, filling behind the intercooler and in front of the wheelarch and ultimately adding a surprising amount of weight and limiting the cooling. Hope LR don't have any kind of radiator in that silly position like I had on a Q7 and, on one side, the Honda. The best solution for a Defender is an air-to-water intercooler positioned in the engine bay, but I don't know what LR have done Rant over.

Unfortunately for my cost I found out there is a small radiator right behind the fog light. I hit a deer almost at 5 mph when I hit it and the trim around the fog light pushed into the radiator. I had a look and no other damage than the pushed in trim. Was very happy. Then I heard water dripping. 😒. Luckily I was less than a mile away from home in NE USA. So it was cold. Got home quickly. Now waiting for parts to fix it. The dealer has no date on parts. Not available in the US or UK. PS. The deer walked away. I agree with you. Why would you put a radiator almost at the axle level in the front of an off road vehicle.. I am sure there is a good reason, not sure what.
@L663
@L663 3 жыл бұрын
The new Defender does indeed have a low down radiator in the arch... and you lead me to another point.... when in wading mode the flaps close to stop muddy water getting in the radiator... but there is no such protection for the arch mounted radiators

I understand it's a feature but with how land rover are now it will brake the new Defender if you can even call it that is not a Defender it's not got a modular like the old one had so they took away the motor that the services use. Like BT needing to go over fields with the boom lift on the back, The water board, The power line people they all use the proper land rover Defender. Thats just a peace crap and only belongs with the other land rovers of today in the city's and towns driven by people who don't need them and then complain about the global warming and the price hike in the city's for the emissions zone.
