Low tension rings only gain you about 8 HP. Engine Masters tested this and that's what they found. Not worth the oil consumption and ring coking issues. Remember Audi with their 2.0 Turbo engines needing their pistons and rings changed after about 20K miles? They used low tension rings in those engines. Funny how the oil consumption went away after they installed new pistons and standard tension rings. You can pick up 8 HP by advancing the timing, a cam change, roller rockers if it didn't already have them, or installing a good set of headers. The rocker arm change they are doing probably freed up 8 HP. That engine won't last with a power adder on top of it. They'll be tearing it down for a ring job after 25K miles.

My engine builder built my 427 in 1983 and he was against nitrous or anything else and said “You want power available all the time so it’s always there” he also had me use lower compression pistons at 10.25:1 so I could use pump gas and it’s still running great 40 years later. It’s got a lot of power and surprised everyone including a policeman who I outran in 83. The builder made everything work together and was a master in tuning. It’s in a 1966 Chevelle which was my first car.

I'm currently trying to build a low-budget 454 bbc from an early 90's 1 ton Chevy dually. I have found that it's a factory roller cam motor which is a plus. I'm going to try to do most of it myself seeing we no longer have a local machine shop around. I'd like to get between at least 350-375 to possibly 425 hp out of it. What would you suggest for a good cam choice and intake? I'm certain you would say 1st thing to change the pistons. Small dome? Thanks! I love your channel!

Can you educate me on the advantage of building a 427BBC compared to an LS of the same displacement please? I'm always surprised when I hear anyone building the old style engines these days. Seems to my ignorant mind that the reliability and affordability combined with tremendous horsepower potential of the LS would render the older engine format obsolete. Curious to hear your side. Thank you in advance!

I got a really interesting question and it's not as dumb as it sounds. I noticed you polished the top of those Pistons which is a good idea. I'm curious about smoothing the edges of the dome. Instead of having sharp edges is most of those don't have rounding the edges a little bit. Would there be any advantage to that? The main reason I ask is I'm not a big fan of those domes in the piston. I prefer a flat top piston but with that 24° valve angle that's a little hard to do to get compression ratios of 10 or more to :1

Not enough to warrant oil burning and coking issues. Audi used low tension rings in their 2.0 turbo engines. Every one of them are smoke machines. They finally fixed that problem because they got tired of paying for customers to have their pistons and rings changed. You can get 8 HP by simply advancing the timing.

Umm, there is a faster easier way to get these numbers. Since CC is the only measurement we care about, then just do that everywhere, all the time. You can calculate the head gasket from pie, but everything else is a simple physical liquid measurement and there's your answer. Take that numerical value any way you like, but food color and alcohol is the best way to CC measure anything that requires a specific measurement at ambient temperature at your current level of specific gravity! Cheers 🍻

I wonder about itemized price to buy the "keeper" parts individually. Could it be it's actually cheaper to start with a complete engine? I also wonder why anyone would go to the expense to build a BBC or SBC when the LS engine family is so readily available and makes so doggone much reliable horsepower.
@TwentytenS4B8
@TwentytenS4B8 2 жыл бұрын
It's always good practice to do a tear down of any used engine you buy that you don't know its history. At most, all I would have done was install new bearings, reassemble it and stab it in to whatever project was going to receive it.
@TwentytenS4B8
@TwentytenS4B8 2 жыл бұрын
@@drewt3210 People who are restoring a classic car that had a 427 would do this. This engine drops right in versus the more expense of buying LS swap parts, and or custom fabrication. Ideally, you want a numbers matching car for the most value but a period correct car is the next best thing. I mean LS swapping a 67 Corvette would be cool, but ultimately more expensive than stabbing in another 427, and removing value at the same time. Now if you're doing a rat rod or restomod then the LS swap can come into play.

@@TwentytenS4B8 the wear and failure items aren’t what I’m talking about. But the cam, rollers and lifters are part of why that engine was worth anything to begin with being upgraded from the crate already. Again why buy a hopped up motor if every part that makes it hopped up over a base factory motor is going to be taken out snd replaced. That’s like buying a brand new home just to tear it all down and build a new one. Instead of just building it how you wanted it from the get go instead of buying already built plans or buying s junk fixer upper
