I imagine it's not effective for winning the race, but can you drive across the infield of the racetrack?

you can pretty much drive wherever you can see. There is no invisible barriers. However its pretty slick, you cant change direction quickly. its faster to maintain your speed and run around the outside. From memory playing this as a kid, the game is smart enough to know you cut the track and the lap doesnt count.
