Ep.63: How do You Develop a Strong Mix Voice?
How do you develop a strong Mix?
Watch this video and find out!
Hi! I’m Chuck Gilmore with Power To Sing.
How do you develop a strong Mix?
The starting point is:
You must have chest voice with the vocal cords coming together properly. “ae ae ae”.
You are able to sing through middle area of the voice called the passage area, bridge or passaggio, from chest to head voice without breaks, flips, cracking, falsetto or breathiness. “Ah”.
You have eliminated all tension from the external muscles surrounding the larynx. “Bubble lips”.
The vocal cords vibrate freely and in balance with the air flow without external muscles grabbing. “Goo”.
You are able to do exercises that develop and maintain freedom and release of the cords without the larynx being pulled upward. “Mum”.
The next step is challenging. It’s illusive. It’s difficult. Difficult because you must let go of any hold or squeeze before you can find power.
What does let go mean? This is hard to evaluate in yourself. Sometimes we’re not self aware enough to be a good judge letting go.
To experience the true physical freedom of release and balance between the air flow and the vocal cords in your mix and/or head voice there must be no tension.
There must be an easy and consistent vibrato at about 6 cycles per second. You must do this on pitches in or above your first bridge. “Mum”.
Once release is present, then as you sing the syllable, let’s say it’s “mum”, you immediately...almost simultaneously, press down into the feeling of release. “Mum”.
Not grab the vocal cord and squeeze out more sound, just press or lean downward into the condition of release. “Mum”
At first you may not find it. But if there is true release and no squeezing or grabbing this will give your vocal cords the ability to vibrate or oscillate more deeply vertically down into the cord structure. This causes a more powerful sound, without squeezing.
Because as soon as you start squeezing, you lose it and it’s gone. Then it’s back to pushing harder...when you should be letting up and finding the release again.
Once you memorize this feeling, then you duplicate it on every note in the bridges first and then throughout your range. “Mum”.
As you develop the ability to press into the condition of release, you begin applying this to songs. After this is engrained in your technique, you don’t have to think about it. You can concentrate on your song and tell the story you want.
All these steps build on each other and give you the power to sing with beauty, confidence and power.
The exercises for your vocal type are designed to help you eliminate tension and sing without flipping, cracking, breaking or straining which is essential to developing a strong mix.
Do you know your vocal type? I’m not referring to whether you’re soprano, alto, tenor or bass. Your vocal type is what you tend to do when you sing.
Visit PowerToSing.com and take the vocal test, which I call the PowerTest. Take the quiz and discover your vocal type. Then go to the Knowledge Center and watch the videos about your vocal type.
Download the exercises for your vocal type and start improving your voice immediately.
I’m Chuck Gilmore with Power To Sing. You can sing higher, with beauty, confidence and power.
I’ll see you inside the next video.

+Marios Mantselis Marios, it's a hard question to answer without hearing you do it. There is a good chance that your larynx is rising as the pitch goes up. Eventually, the sound gets choked off. You may want to take a look at www.PowerToSing.com and take the vocal test (PowerTest). You can discover your vocal type and get exercises (in the Knowledge Center) that will help you be able to do this without pushing or doing it too light. The exercises will teach you how to do it without the larynx going up. See if it helps.

Hello sir! I can feel how knowledgeable you are with music. I am trying to come across many KZfaq music masters in order to seek help. I guess I am 1 out of a hundred million individuals who has a kind of key in singing. Well, I guess it runs in our blood and I got this from my dad. My concern is that, I don't know what kind of term you can call my key. Let me explain it. When I was a kid probably before hitting puberty, I tend to sing comfortably male songs in which obviously shows that I have a low range but not too low. Now, after puberty stage, my key got lower to the extent that I can't sing male songs comfortably but here's the mystery. I tend to get comfortably singing female key (not in a high pitched form) but in a low pitched way. I hope anybody could help me get enlightened with this.

Anybody.. I can now sing comfortably through my vocal break with low to medium volume. But I cannot get through it as I get louder. What are you actually doing that makes the sound louder / stronger? Is louder and stronger the same thing? What are you pressing down on or leaning onto? I know its not in the throat but what are you doing? Where do you feel anything? Are you applying more air pressure somehow? And if so how if not pushing? MT.
@PowerToSing
@PowerToSing Жыл бұрын
It feels like I'm leaning on overlapping resonance of chest and head voice. That's just me. I think it's different for everyone. But with mix, the downward lean into the feeling of mix is noticeable when changing from a narrow vowel like "new" to a more open vowel like "no" being careful that the "no" is kept in the same feeling that the "new" established. It is possible to lean on that feeling as long as the "no" vowel stays consistent with the feeling the "new". Otherwise it starts to spread, splat, and raise the larynx.
@Cloppa2000
@Cloppa2000 Жыл бұрын
@@PowerToSing Thank you Chuck. I guess I will have to persevere and try and figure it out. I understand pretty much everything else like the splat and spreading and keeping the nooo shape on the no but I just don't get the lean. 😋 Do you lean forward slightly??? Does leaning forward slightly help?? Is it just the thought of leaning or is it nothing to do with position? I get it in sport where you physically lean into something but not with singing. Does it just mean think/sing louder? Or just apply more relaxed pressure? I've confused myself now! I can't even think to describe what I do to sing louder! I just do it!Lol. When I figure it out I'll try to describe it on here!! 🤣 MT.
@PowerToSing
@PowerToSing Жыл бұрын
@@Cloppa2000 It is definitely a personal feeling that is difficult to describe. And how I feel it and describe my own feeling may not be the way another singer feels and describes it. It's very subjective. But it is not a physical observable thing. You don't look at me and see me leaning forward, etc. But I will say, I think for me several things are present. 1. A balance between the air flow and the vocal cord muscle. 2. That balance for me feels very "released" ie, just friendly compression of the vocal cords with no outside extrinsic muscles squeezing or raising the larynx. 3. It feels very much like the air flow is increasing and the vocal cords are relaxing with the air flow. My advice is to not focus on it. Focus on doing the exercises correctly. The power of the voice will grow naturally over time when your voice is balanced.

Is there any way to develop my Mixed voice (wanna say mixed voice but I’m not completely sure it’s not a falsetto because with that I can go extremely high (F6) and it sounds airy like a falsetto does and it’s not a chest voice it’s like a falsetto but sounds more powerful and takes more effort to produce, I was wondering if there’s a way to develop that voice to make my higher notes more powerful the highest I’ve gone in “mixed” is an F5 but my comfort stands at an E5/D5 is there any way to develop these notes to make them sound more powerful ??
@PowerToSing
@PowerToSing 6 жыл бұрын
It depends. The key is the first bridge which is E, F, F#4. If you are able to sing here without the larynx coming up, without any reach and appropriate vocal cord adjustments, the second bridge will follow, which is the A, Bb, B4, C5. Then the approach to the 3rd bridge (C#, D, Eb5) and the third bridge (E, F, F#5) will likewise develop. It also depends on your genetics, your tessitura and your age.

+Maëva Gosselin Hi Maeva: If the nodules are soft, they can go away with proper vocal rest and then rehabilitation through correct vocal exercises. If the nodules are hard, they have to be surgically removed. Only an ENT doctor can tell you which they are. Find a specialist who works with singers. Save your money and go if he can't afford it. Either way, you should only proceed under the direction of a doctor. I would work with you once you have a doctors release or statement of condition. It's that serious.

Unfortunately, it seems a lot of these videos don't come close to providing (not hating on anybody, or their vocal coaching) information on how to strengthen the voice beyond that F-F#-G (for men) to a point where it sounds just like chest voice and is actually useable in singing. It's frustrating. One would think it isn't possible to do that, but take singers like David Phelps, who clearly aren't just belting out in chest voice, so it appears to be possible to train your disconnected voice to sound as strong as chest after that first bridge break. So please, coach, if you have any ideas on what it takes to strengthen that range of the voice (f# all the way to C-D for guys) I'd love to know. Anything lower is not really a challenge as it is anatomically within connected voice range and anything sung above but tonally softer is usually just head voice sung as resonantly as the singer can.
@PowerToSing

This is a great question Ricky and I don't think the answer is the same for every singer. For me personally I didn't get close to that power in my voice that I could actually use in a song or audition that I was happy with for a long time. Probably 10+ years. Pavarotti said it took him 10 years to get an "elegant" F4. Pavarotti! 10 years! I didn't really get much power in my voice until I learned to let go of all the tension (I didn't even know was there) on the cord structure and then press in to this condition of no tension. It's as hard to explain as it is to do. Largely because it IS so individual. We almost both have to experience it before we can talk about it. You may find this recording of a live broadcast I did helpful: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/kKh9gqaFmtm3dWQ.html particularly between minutes 16-20 . I'd recommend the whole video though. I'm hoping to help students get to this power sooner, but it's not easy.

Hey! I’ve noticed that your very open to answering questions in the comments, so I thought I’d try my luck. I am a teenage guy, and whenever I begin to go into my higher register (possibly mix voice,) the sound begins to sound different?? Lol. The sound isn’t strained and I don’t feel much pressure, but I feel the sound coming from up and back of my mouth. The sound has a somewhat airy quality (not falsetto) and is more shaky than pure chest. When I go even higher with this same placement, the sound starts whiny. Certain vowels are easier to achieve and I feel that as I practice and relax more the sound is better but still not well supported. Is this normal development of mixed voice or am I just developing bad habits? (Anyone else who has any experience is welcome to reply with advice :) )

It's because the larynx is going into swallowing mode and rising as you sing higher. You can do an exercise that will get the larynx down and strop the "scratchy" fry sound. It's the "gee" with the dopy sound. This imposes the larynx and stops that.

Not necessarily. The best and fastest way is to have a balanced voice with equal chest and head voice. Also your transition through the bridge is very important that it's with a low, resting larynx. The combination of these will allow your total voice to get stronger....including the mix and head voice. That being said, if you have no chest voice there's no mix. If you have no head voice, there can be no mix. After all, when you mix something together, if you only have one ingredient, what are you mixing?

I understand your thinking. You are evaluating it from the sound. However, I am using a different criteria. It is the condition of the vocal cords that determines disconnected falsetto. For years I made the same mistake. I know when my thyroid arytenoid is engaged (Mix and Head Voice) or disengaged (disconnected falsetto). Even though they sound very similar.
