Smooth out your vocal breaks with this effective singing exercise. We’ve all had it happen. You’re singing through a song and you get to that point in the piece where your voice breaks, flips, clunks, or simply disappears altogether.
The funny thing is, this is happening right in the middle of your voice. Why is that? You know you have notes above that point, but why does your voice struggle smack bang in the middle? I’ve got all the answers coming right up…

0:22 Defining 'Register Transitions'
Classical singers call it the ‘passaggio,’ but as a contemporary singing teacher I prefer the term, transition. We actually have three points of transition with each one occurring between the four distinct registers, pulse, lower, upper and flute for girls and falsetto for guys.
1:32 The 'mechanics' of Register Transitions
In order for our voice to smoothly transition from one register to the next we must learn to coordinate our breath stream, body alignment and vocal tract shapes.
2:56 Vowels and Register Transitions
Different vowels will cause the voice to respond in slightly different ways. So when we’re singing a song and the notes reach the transition point, the vowel you’re on at the time, might just determine whether or not your transition is a smooth one or not.
4:40 Register Transitions and the Breath Stream
Once you become more confident with the transition points try applying a more consistent air flow as well as a more even volume throughout the scale.

Your vocal exercises have been one of the best things I’ve bought in a long time, I can already hear improvement as well with my break, which is usually G4. When working with your exercises, I can actually come in where the tenors do and go all the way up. It’s the breathing I’m working on but I got to 18 today. I never rush or push myself and keep trying with each. I can hear vast improvement and am starting to hear my own sound come out. The singing you give on each video is amazing and works wonders, I usually get lost with some things, but you explain things so well I can follow better than I did. I’ve been training on and off for years since childhood, I’m 34 now and I can absolutely say that no one would regret getting your exercises.

Once I had a show in '87 where I managed my break and every thing was magical I knew we made it. Unfortunately the old habits dominated and I never found it like that ever again and we never made it. So old bad habits live long frustrating lives.

You make me want to watch till the very end without skipping. Few people can capture my attention like that in there presentations. I like that 'buttoning' off tactic when approaching the transition, like approaching a speed bump. It's a good, succinct thought.

Hi Dr Dan my natural singing voice is in the "mix". Some people have told me my voice is too high or piercing. I have tried to develop my chest voice and have succeeded to some extent and I have increased my chest register but I guess the aforementioned comments make me dislike my voice. I was inspired by your words of love your own voice and I love to sing . Can you tell me why some people can sing with extreme vocal range in their chest voice and how I can develop a stronger "mix" voice that doesn't sound so high? Thanks so much. Lyn

I sing chorally as 2nd bass (lowest bass part) in an 8th voiced semi professional classical choir. i would claim a chorally usable non-amplified range of C2# - D4 The thing is, i don't feel like i'm weak in the middle, i'm weak from Bb3 and above, i don't have notes "above" that i can sing, well yes in a completely detatched falsetto. But to me, the higher the note, the worse. I would prefer only singing notes below C3, it's much more relaxing! If i sing a D4 it's a very loud 'shouty' D4. I wish i could get the B3 - C4 - D4 to feel (and sound) more relaxed. And plz note, the D4 is my absolute limit, before i have to falsetto...

I tried singing today by myself...I reached e4 comfortably and c3 as my comfortable lowest...I have jaw tension and high larynx...I tried looking down at a right angle when it get to high notes and breathe from the diaphragm.. that remove my high larynx...my larynx strains at a3 first then it turned to f4..I think that technique worked..my falsetto lost some notes when I sang... hopefully it will comeback.. now its the jaw tension that needs work

Dr Dan's Voice Essentials one question.. how do I hit higher notes..do mix voice starts at e4....thank you and your videos brought out my real range which is b2-f4 and not a2 to d4....I'll start doing mix vocals exercises..because the earlier I go..the earlier I get results

Hi Dr Dan how would I find out my first transition and second transition? Would the first transition be into middle register and second transition be into head register?
@nikozua

Thanks for this advice... i already thought i pressing to much air through the chords. Do you also got an idea how to ad more "Body" to the thin sounding head/falsetto voice? I am not a actually fan of using the breathy falsetto (for me) I would like to stay fully conected with the vocal folds. I try to add some sort of vocal fry to my headvoice-setup. If that kinda dangerous?
@nikozua
@nikozua 8 жыл бұрын
May let explain my Point of view: falsetto is the breathy tone. More air is getting throgh the Cord area. Haed voice on the other side the vocalfolds are closed, like in the vocal fry... a loud Sound with almost no air needed. Any corretions are wellcome! :-)

Is the passagio biologically the point where the voice becomes CT dominant instead of TA dominant? Also, is it true women become CT dominant much sooner in their range? And if so, why, and what does this mean for their passagio?
@DrDanRobinson
@DrDanRobinson 6 жыл бұрын
Stone, It's rather complex. Mechanically, the voice needs to transfer dominance between the musculature at certain points. But it is important to note that resonance influences these changes also.
@markbennett8683
@markbennett8683 3 жыл бұрын
There are physiological registers, like CT dominance and TA dominance, as you mentioned. There are also acoustic registers, meaning how many harmonics of the sung fundamental are lower than the formant resonances of the vocal tract. It is very common for singers and singing teachers to lack the anatomical and physics knowledge to be able to discuss these coherently, and to treat acoustic transitions and physiological transitions as if they were the same thing, which is why there is such wide disagreement about the number of registers, how they feel and whether men and women have the same registers. To answer your first question, yes, in many contexts, when people talk about passaggio, they are talking about the M1-M2 transition, which is physiologically the change from TA dominance to CT dominance. However, in some contexts, that is not what they mean at all, and they are describing an acoustic phenomenon that causes destructive interference between the pitch and the resonance of the vocal tract, partly caused by the vowel. Modifying the vowel removes the destructive interference. Women have a choice when to become CT dominant in their range. In classical singing, this is usually quite low, but in CCM, the transition point is generally about a 5th higher and could be an octave or more higher. Men and women are not significantly different in terms of where they can make the transition relative to their overall range, but there are different cultural and aesthetic values that make it desirable for then to change in different places. What this means for the M1-M2 transition? Well, the lower you make the transition, the easier it is to hide it. The higher the transition point, the greater the tension in the TA and vocalis muscles, so the harder it is to shift smoothly to a relaxed vocalis while the CT takes up the slack. As Dr Dan demonstrated so well, it needs very soft singing to keep the TA tension low, which is fine when you have a mic, but it won't work at all if you are singing unamplified in a large space. Hope that helps!

Hello Dr Dan, I have a question for you. On what note do you switch from TA dominant phonation to CT dominant phonation? I've read a scientific paper which says that TA dominant phonation usually occurs only at 3-4 lowest semitones of your voice. My accoustic prima passagio point lies approximately on F#4, and second acoustic transition point is B4. According to this video, I guess the same happens for you. In general I have a habbit to engage more TA musculature in my phonation, and now I'm trying to balance my voice better. So I'm curious where lies your "mechanical" bridge. I couldn't sing higher than C#4 - D4 before due to excessive TA engagement, and then I figured out how to engage CT musculature to tilt my larynx, and now I can hit C5 - D5 full voice in every CVT(Complete vocal technique) voice mode(Neutral, curbing, edge, overdrive), up to C6(only neutral withour air mode). I'm not sure about D5 overdrive, since it's said that the top for overdive is C5 for men, so I guess I switch to edge after that. So, yes, now I'm trying to balance my voice further. I have a feeling that this is the matter of choice how much TA you should engage.
@DrDanRobinson
@DrDanRobinson 2 жыл бұрын
What works in theory (i.e. scientific papers) doesn't always apply well to 'every voice!' We are able to make decisions to maintain TA dominance beyond the 'mechanical transition,' and vice versa.
@Samnit4Q
@Samnit4Q 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your answer. This is a good point. However I do know this. This is how it works basically. We start using CT but keep TA engaged all the way. But as we start use CT it becomes dominant. I was curious on what pitch you start using your CT. TA is dominant when we don't use CT. A lot of beginners can't phonate on higher pitches because they don't use CT thus don't tilt their larynges. So they try to go higher only increasing air pressure.

I tried doing it several times but there’s no way my voice can go from one register to the other, it breaks no matter what, I’ve already tried all the exercises I found on internet, I’m really frustrated and fed up with this, I have access to both of my registers but separately, my lowest note is a D#2, and my highest note is a C7 (D#2 chest voice, C7 head voice), my break is up to G4, I don’t know what else to do, I’m a boy

@cliff1745
@cliff1745 6 жыл бұрын
felix maidana Is G4 your highest note? I'd say you're a bass-baritone/baritone. My vocal range is E2-G#4 but I sing comfortably in A2-C4 if I don't do warm-ups. I either reach a G#4 note or break my voice and it's really frustrating because I want to be able to sustain an A4 note since most pop baritone songs have many A4's in them, but I can barely sustain a F#4/G4. I'm just 17 though so I hope I'll see some improvements as my voice matures further.

Dr Dan's Voice Essentials I just came from your video about baritones vs basses. The guy from that video is a Tenor who hasn’t learned to get his M1 past the first break. And you fail to neglect the fact that a lot of untrained tenors have similar timbre and smaller ranges because they haven’t had the range-building exercises or training in general to know how to do that. A lot of tenors can’t belt above an F4 when they first start. It’s a matter of fatigue training and learning your way around the first break.
