Today I’ll show you a little known or used exercise that will stop the pulled chest so you can begin the process of building your mixed voice. This is a proven exercise that works for students who need extra help getting mixed voice and it will work for you.

I'm both flabbergasted and infuriated. I've been a professional singer for over 20 years. I've taken hundreds of voice lessons, dating all the way back to high school. I've never heard of mixed voice in my life. My break has always been just the worst, and it's stopped me from using my head voice my whole career. I can't believe I'm just now hearing of "mixed-voice." How was this never taught to me?! Thanks for this video series. My mind is blown.

Teachers who don't know about this, aren't trying to withhold information. They don't know that they don't know. My own teacher, who received his bachelors and masters in vocal performance could not find any teacher in his studies to help him and he was angry. Finally at age 27 he found someone who knew about this and helped him. He has devoted his entire life to develop a technique that everyone can learn. I was 43 before I found it. It is life changing for me personally.

Here in the Philippines, "ng" is present in most sentences we used everyday with our native language and also in our songs like "Ngayon" "Ang" "Saang" "Aling" "Merong" "Ngalan" "Mga"-pronounced as ma-nga and many more. I am not bragging and I do not know if this is the reason but me and most of my friends and family could sing really well. I do not know if it is because of us loving karaoke but I really think pronouncing and singing with "ng" sound really helps.

Now I swear, since I hadn't done a gig for 4 months, last week I went to do one and I basically couldn't sing with my chest voice anymore, it's like I had forgotten how to sing lol! @PowerToSing

@@jesspostings8700 I don't teach students to go for a certain sound. You must go for a certain anatomical condition. The vocal cords need to be appropriately adducted (brought together) and the larynx needs to remain at the level where you speak. When these things are right, the "right" tone or sound will result.

Hi Chuck! I've been singing my entire life but a few months ago I found out about the existence of "mixed voice" and I suddenly understood exactly what my voice was missing and how that was holding me back from being a better singer. For months now I've been reading articles, watching videos and doing exercises but to no avail. I just found your videos and was pleased to find out that you actually didn't know how to do mixed voice and were able to teach yourself! That gives me hope!!! So I've been watching a bunch of your videos and I'm trying to do these exercises but my stupid flip-falsetto voice keeps having to choose whether to do them in chest voice or falsetto... which am I supposed to be doing them in? Should I "flip" between them? I just can't see myself ever bridging the gap :( Please help!

It is applicable to any song that goes into or through the first bridge of the voice when you begin to use a mix of chest and head voice. The first bridge for men begins on the E4, F, F#4. For ladies it is A4, Bb, B4, C#5.

Hi ! Really really really by far the best advise on mix voice on KZfaq ! I'm a rock singer since my twenties but I discovered the NG exercise only about 5 years ago. That exercise extended my almost tenor range to F5 ! But, but, but... I lost a lot of my head voice (falsetto) range doing so (over F5). It feels like I've built up muscle for mix voice, and now my voice don't want to break. Do I have to learn to "mix" my mix voice with my falsetto ? Do you have advice to help me get back that falsetto range that I could play with up to F6 ?
@PowerToSing
@PowerToSing 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Jean-Pierre: Have you tried breaking into falsetto lower in your register? Say around g or a4? And then take the falsetto higher?
@Digital-Sound
@Digital-Sound 9 ай бұрын
This is great information and instantly helped me. I have been involved with another program for about 7 months now. Where I have worked on stretching the chest voice and have been having good results. but still missing that sound I get when I do your instructions on mixed voice. But my question is: If we have more chest range, isnt it better for mix overall? Or do we need to worry about it. In your experience. Another good youtube coach seems to do similar to your teaching. And your instructions have helped me. So I am probably answering my own question? Thanks for you time!
@PowerToSing
@PowerToSing 9 ай бұрын
Hi D.S. More chest voice, which is pulled up higher, is not going to help build a better mix. It only builds a better pulled up chest. Depending on the voice, that might work for a few years. But eventually the voice stops working very well, vibrato slows and students can't figure out what they are doing wrong. Chest voice for a guy tenor or baritone begins at the E4 just above middle C. E4, F, F#4 is the all important first bridge. Get it right and you get almost everything else right!

Wow, it's amazing to see you replying to comments years after the video is posted. So I have a question. I have a hard time getting a smooth and gradual transition from the chest to the head voice. When I do the first exercise, I can feel and hear a definite shift in tone as I approach the bridge. I just can't seem to grasp the feel of that smooth transition through the passaggio. If I try to maintain the more chesty feel for the higher notes, I only get the pulled chest. So basically, I want to ask if I'm doing it wrong if I feel like my voice is shifting rather than maintaining a smooth connection throughout. It's hard to explain, but it sounds like NG~NG~NG~HNG~HNG~HNG~HNG~NG~NG. Thanks you!

Hi WW: At first we almost all feel the transition areas. Also, what you are describing can be diminished by cutting the loudness or intensity by 50%, especially in the chest voice. Try and reduce how loud and hard you are starting the exercise. See if this makes a difference.

@@PowerToSing Thank you so much for the reassurance. I was worried I had the technique all wrong. I definitely noticed a smoother transition when singing softer!

Great video! I have spent the last five months having some formal vocal education for the first time in my life and I have pretty much eliminated my chest pulling (unless I’m just learning the tune) but I’m not sure that I’ve quite achieved mixed voice. Is one qualifier to have equally balanced chest and head? I find I have a very strong chest voice so I have to try to lower my volume so that my head voice is not too weak in comparison. Is this right or is it better to strengthen head voice?

It is right. Reduce chest for now so that it equals head. Then bring them both along together until both are very strong. Too strong of chest makes it very difficult to blend them together without cracking as you transition from chest to head voice.

Oh geez, thank you for the info. I didn't like the sound of the mix voice( before knowing it) that's why I'm pulling my chest, thinking it sound more release and no tension like screaming. When I tried the exercise, I kinda strain doing it than my pulling chest.

Could you explain a little about what pulled chest really is? Why it’s bad? And how it differs from mixed?

I like the ng exercises and will work on them, as more of a bass baritone though my primo passagio is at A3 so starting at B3 might not do the trick ;)
