Ep.64: How To Sing Mixed Voice: How Can I Tell if I’m in Mixed Voice?
How Can You Tell if You are In a Mixed Voice?
There are 3 things, that if present in your voice, means you absolutely cannot be in mix. Watch and find out what those 3 things are.
Hi! I’m Chuck Gilmore with Power To Sing.
Absolutely No Mixed Voice
Here are 3 things that if present in your voice means you cannot be singing with a Mixed Voice.
Where is Mix: The First Bridge of the Voice
For simplicity I’ll talk about the Mix in the first bridge of the voice. For the women it’s the A above Middle C; A, Bb, B, and C5. For the men it’s the E above middle C; E, F, F#4.
What is Mixed Voice
For Mixed Voice to be present in the first bridge of the voice there must be a blend or mix of chest and head voice. If you are missing chest or head voice you cannot be singing in mixed voice.
How to Sing Mixed Voice: If Chest Voice is absent, you are not in Mixed Voice
If your vocal cords are disconnected you are in falsetto and there is no chest voice. Here’s an example of falsetto brought down to where chest should be. [Demo]
If your vocal cords are coming together so lightly that there’s virtually no chest resonance you have no chest voice. Here’s an example of such a light cord connection there’s no resonance. [Demo]
Without chest voice, there is nothing to mix with head voice. In other words there is no mixed voice.
How to Sing Mixed Voice: If Head Voice is absent, you are not in Mixed Voice
This is the same as discussed with chest voice. If the vocal cords are disconnected into falsetto, there is no head voice, only falsetto. (Watch Episode 28 to learn the difference between Head Voice and Falsetto)
Here’s an example of falsetto in the higher range. [Demo] In contrast, connected head voice. [Demo]
3. If you pull chest voice into the the First Bridge and beyond, there is no head voice, just pulled up chest voice. [Pulled up Chest Demo]
Without head voice, there is nothing to mix with chest voice. In other words, there is no mixed voice.
There are also imperfect qualities of Mixed Voice.
Imperfect Mixed Voice
When we first learn to sing with a mixed voice, it’s rare that our mix is perfect. For example:
Your Larynx is high and you are pitchy and the resonance is incomplete
Your vowels are splatting
You pulled chest too high before you got into mix
Your chest voice is light, therefore your mix lacks vibrance and strength.
There is some strain in your mix, the vibrato is slow, the voice is pinched.
You over narrow the vowels and your words are distorted or unnatural
Your cords disconnect momentarily, but then reconnect
If your mixed voice is imperfect, aren’t you actually not in a mix? You are in a mix, but it needs continual refining and improvement.
Mixed Voice and Vocal Types
This is where understanding your vocal type becomes so important. You may be in a mixed voice but the larynx tends to be high. So, your vocal type is Pulled Chest/High Larynx.
Doing the exercises for Pulled Chest-High Larynx will counteract your tendency to have a high larynx and move you closer to an ideal mixed voice.
Most of us tend to do certain things when we sing. Even when we are able to sing in and through the bridges, it’s possible that our mix still needs development and refining.
Mine does.
Do you know your vocal type? This has a direct bearing on learning how to mix or improve your mix.
Go to PowerToSing.com and take the vocal test, which I call the PowerTest. Take the quiz and discover your vocal type. Then go to the Knowledge Center and watch the videos about your vocal type.
Download the free vocal exercises and start doing them. You will start seeing improvement in your voice very quickly. You will be able to move closer to an ideal mixed voice.
I’m Chuck Gilmore with Power To Sing. You can sing higher, with beauty, confidence and power.
I’ll see you inside the next video.

I’ve been singing for about 48 years and I can honestly tell you I think the most difficult thing about mix voiced To me is simply that it is an abstract concept. Sure it can be explained but you actually have to feel it in your voice. I’ve always had a problem with anything that ambiguous. Lol. Practice practice practice and be very very self aware of what you’re doing. All great information here

Awesome video! I love it how you actually showed the difference in the sound! Thanks a lot for it! I'm find it very hard to differentiate how it feels to sing a very high note in mixed or a connected head voice. The difference between chest and falsetto for example is enormous, but how to tell apart mix and connected head voice?
@PowerToSing
@PowerToSing 4 жыл бұрын
It's hard to tell at first if you are in HV or Falsetto because both vibrate in the head. But if you feel a disconnect in tone on the way up...ie a crack or break that doesn't reconnect, or if you have to reconnect to get back into chest, it is likely you were in falsetto. Head Voice blends back into chest. Its takes a while to become so aware of what your voice is actually doing to tell the difference.

Hello I really hope you see this! Thank you for the advice, and I currently believe I have discovered my mix, but when I use this “mix” it comes out very sharp and thin - almost like a whistle tone but lower more in the 5th octave range. It also feels less powerful and I feel like I thin my voice out greatly when I transition into it. I am very curious as to whether this actually is my mix and I just need to strengthen it and correct my technique, or if I’m just straining and getting a high pitched tone.

@PowerToSing

@@sakthivelb9074 You won't pull chest if you stay with the ng. You might overcompress a little to maintain the cord connection. Gradually over time relax more and more with the ng sound so it's not so compressed. You will feel the cords suddenly let go if you don't maintain a constant tone and the cords come apart. I can only ever seem to access 'Mixed voice' if I'm singing quietly, so as to prioritise free movement in the pitch change over volume, and when I do that I manage to retain some element of chest resonance at higher pitches without tension, and my voice feels like one consistent register. But then as soon as I try to sing louder my voice returns to the usual frustrating binary options of pulled chest or disconnected falsetto, and I can't seem to achieve a mix! I'm guessing perhaps I'm trying to get volume from additional muscle tension at the larynx rather than breath control, or something? There's definitely something I'm doing wrong anyway!
@PowerToSing
@PowerToSing 5 жыл бұрын
Hi James: Singing less loud is a great way to begin feeling the mix and is a good strategy. The challenge, as you mention, is increasing volume without falling out of mix and falling into chest. I 've recently done a few live broadcasts that show you how to work on this. You may want to check out this last one: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ZrlkZ7OhrrfTdXk.html and this one: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/h5dikrWGpuDcfp8.html Essentially we must learn to increase the volume while "staying" in the narrow "place". For example, lets say you are able to mix on the F4 on the word "new" . The next step is to use an octave repeat scale and sing "New" to "No" and get louder as you sing "No" but only allow the "no" to stay in the exact same feeling as the "new". It takes practice, but that's how it begins to solidify and grow. Watch the videos and see if they help.

also your example # 3 of "pulled chest" was not it. It was simply a mouth resonant sound it still had a clear and open top end. "Pulled Chest" is where the folds are so overloaded with a combination of air pressure and lower frequency they cannot produce enough upper mid and upper frequencies to "thin" out the folds and allow them to ascend in pitch. The voice has to sound strained or "stuck" to be pulled chest. But kudos for not being able to reproduce an authentic pulled chest sound - a mark of good training.

A voice is ALWAYS mixing so one doesn't need to figure out if its "in mix". Our voices are always resonating in the throat, mouth and sinus cavity - its a matter of degree based on the frequencies we are singing and how intensely we are singing them. Even if the folds are disconnected, as in falsetto, there is still a mix of mouth and sinus. Our normal speech is a mix of all three resonances at once where the resonances are in balanced ratios. IMHO this idea of "mixed voice" has created more confusion for singers than its helped eliminate.
@PowerToSing
@PowerToSing 8 жыл бұрын
+Kevin Richards Rock the Stage NYC Hi Kevin. Thanks for your insights. In my video www.powertosing.com/ep-33-how-to-sing-mix-part-1/ which is Episode 33, I talk about mix being always present. I also think there is a special interaction of resonances and vocal cord adjustments occurring in and around the passaggi. The first one especially impacts me as a singer.
@TotalSinging
@TotalSinging 8 жыл бұрын
Power To Sing Pardon me if I missed the other video. In my experience and research the passagio is merely the male voice resisting blending away from the range of speech. But you're right if the adjustment of compression and resonance blending is in proper ratios, its easier to get the voice to blend into the upper resonances.
@TotalSinging
@TotalSinging 8 жыл бұрын
I hate to be too nitpicky but most of what you defined as symptoms of an "imperfect mixed voice" have little to do with resonance blends - a lot of them are symptoms of unbalanced support, fold overload, poor articulation and/or untrained pitch memory.

My own journey with mixed voice has been quick. I did many many exercises and it magically bridged-ish. Now, there isn't a break, but the two voices are truly mixing together. They are on top of each other. Say I was doing the scale from low to high, my chest voice will go up then head voice will slowly appear, but not together. It sounds like I have 2 voices during the transition, like a robot. How can I fix this? Because it seems to be the last thing I need before I can use this voice. I can't seem to find anything on why this is happening or how to fix this.

Nasality and falsetto is usually a result of the larynx inching it's way up. Breathlessness is often caused by too much air escaping too fast which is caused by the vocal cords not coming together firmly enough. Voice type is obviously more than just range and I can't lower my falsetto to 1:23 could that suggest anything about my voice type (I'm trying to figure out what voice type I am)? I sing generally from D2 to F4 pretty comfortably and then I have to put more effort in to get up to G4 and A4+ (in which I'm belting basically) my falsetto goes up to G5, maybe beyond that, I haven't tried yet. Also I got pretty comfortably between my falsetto and modal voice, the crack doesn't happen very easily unless I'm sliding from from those high 5th octave notes where I'm really going for it (I don't crack when I relax, or it rarely happens).

When ever the pitches of the song take you into the first bridge, you should be mixing your chest and head voice and not pulling up the chest, or breaking into falsetto. This is true in any song you choose. Learning to sing is not hard. But depending on your goals, talent, and work ethic, it can take a while to achieve a high degree of skill and confidence. Pavarotti a famous opera tenor said it took him 10 years to sing a note the way he wanted it to sound and to feel.
