This is the third of six episodes drawing from the wisdom in The Bhadavad Gita. Brought to you by the easy-going Adam Keen, episode 3 considers who or what is the individual.
The individual is not usually considered when we look out into the world. So, it’s assumed that the world needs changing and not the perceiver of it. As far as we go, we assume we are a certain and definite entity, but this is deeply limiting and sets us in conflict with reality outside.
On the other hand, yoga-texts show us that, In fact, trying to do so sets us in a constant battle against life, asserting our fairly randomly construed boundaries against a flowing and changing world that does not accept being related to in such a narrow kind of way.
Instead then, yoga thinking suggests that we can think of ourselves, our individuality, in a different way; holding ourselves as the location of a unique and distinct consciousness but, not against the reality outside as a definition, rather in a process of relation and flow with reality as it is. Here, our boundaries and definitions are fluid and moving reflecting our true organic and living nature.
Practical philosophy means thinking that is helpful to daily life; it contributes to making it better, more enriched, and more meaningful. It is approachable and relevant to everybody providing a simplified look at concepts, not for the sake of knowledge, but to inspire one's journey. It assists the student with learning to ask the right questions about living.
Series 1: The Bhagavad Gita.
Often taken to be a musty old book relevant to yoga teachers only; this book is set on a medieval battlefield, but one that is just as relevant to us now, engaged in our modern battle in the attempt to get what we want out of life. Instead, The Bhagavad Gita suggests that this attitude to life doesn’t work to produce what we really want; which is happiness found in peace, rather than achieving. The text suggests a radical change of perspective as to what we are, what life is about, and hence how to live it in order to achieve this newfound goal. This is called ‘yoga’ and is clearly elaborated on over the six episodes in this series.
