Brian Warren, from Meridian Community College, demonstrates how to grind properly an HSS lathe tool bit.
If you own or work with a manual lathe, you know that HSS tool bits are some of the most popularly used types of tools. They are rather affordable, versatile, and are great to get simple jobs done efficiently.
In order to get good results and minimize chatter issues, it's important to know how to grind them correctly.
In this video tutorial, Brian Warren, Division Chair of Industrial Technology at Meridian Community College, shows how the grinding process is done and some of his tricks to get the best results.

Excellent suggestion about holding the tool up to the light and looking for no deviation in reflections!!!

Useful but if the cameraman can have some early takes to set some focus points. That'll keep things in-frame, in-focus, and prevent annoying movement in-shot. Your viewers' time is important enough to practice shots and edit. By all means, I'd like to see more content like this. I've usually used bits someone else has ground and I need topical material like this to learn. Thank you.

Good video for a basic cutting tool. So so many different ways to skin this cat, but the basics are grinding the proper clearances for sure.

Excuse me please - do you use a diamond grinding wheel for working on the HSS tool bit? I can clearly see an outer thin ring on the wheel suggesting just that. In which case - is it a good choice for HSS? I've heard that it is advised to use diamond wheels for nothing but carbide tipped tools because HSS (and any other kind of steel) will "gum up" the diamond wheel surface in no time.

I am sure it would be great if it was in focus. Sadly much of the explanation was made waving the bit around and the image was fuzzy.

I enjoy these practical videos, especially since I am new to the machine world. Keep them coming but maybe put the camera on a tripod and focus it a little better.

Great advice. I know grinding HSS is something I struggled with in school but my grinder skills have improved out in industry. Hopefully you're video production skills improve to so you can better show what's going on and not have missed or out of focus shots.

Video: See this how I've got this clearance on this bit? Me: Hold on I need to turn on my windshield wipers I can't see a thing. Hold my beer and keep the wheel steady for me for a sec.

One of these instructionals where clear, concise visuals are imperative. Blurry video which isn't extremely close up and well lit, is utterly useless.

would love to see all this again with a camera that was locked on the grindering wheel an a second off to the side to show what u was using to cool the part an maybe a better way to show the progress of the cuts.

Need an acme thread gauge and then it's pretty much the same thing. Get your angle and tip width right keeping your clearances below the cutting edges.

Worst video I've seen. He is moving the thing around so fast before the cameraman gets the video of it but then he moves it right away and you don't even know what he has done. I think I'll leave not knowing how to do this yet
