Glad to see that people are using my copy of Allen's Kreutzer. His fingerings were just a starting place. We spent a lot of time identifying different fingerings on the etudes.

Janek Gwizdala has some good books that has helped me a lot. The "Iconic lines" shows a lot of examples on how famous players played on for example a ii-V-I and tells you the context of it in an exciting way. It's written for bass, but most of the lines themselves aren't bass lines anyway.

Brazilian music it's great to play as a etudes especially choro. Pixinguinha music for example. Also Piazolla's music helps to figure it out some interesting fingerings and technical challenges. Don't forget other baroque composers like Telemann and Vivaldi. Even renaissce music it's so helpful to play two or more lines at the same time. There's a lot of funny staff to develop tecnique.

Thank You Mikko. I have the Barry Galbraith: "Daily Studies In Melodic and Harmonic Minor" and his "The Fingerboard Workbook".The Berklee Series Guitar: "Classical Studies for Pick-Style Guitar " has a great combination of Kreutzer Etudes,Carulli Etudes and Bach Inventions.I consider "Linear Expressions" an etude book.Since learning all the lines in that book, playing them everyday ,and tweaking the lines as you suggested in that lesson,it is (IMO) hands down one of the best line playing books written for jazz guitar .

Years ago, in the 80's, took a lesson with John Scofield. He told me the price he was asking was a lot to pay for basically just jamming with him, but I'd be welcome to continue with him if I wanted to (paying to "jam"). It really wasn't a lot of money for such an opportunity, and despite my financial limitations at the time, I wish I continued with him. Sadly, at the that age I didn't understand the value of making friends with the great players and just playing with them - or that this was even an option for me. The one thing he told me during the lesson, besides just playing a tune or two with me, was to check out the Partitas and Sonatas by JS Bach! It's great to hear you play the G Minor Presto! Over the years, I've worked quite a bit on the B minor Partita, but haven't tried the G Minor which is lovely and sounds incredibly useful for Jazz language facility. Thank you, Mikko!

Although not written down, Julian Lage wrote etudes, maybe there are scores somewhere, also I would recommend the works of Leo Brouwer, he wrote a lot if interesting studies that have some value in terms of textures and rythmns etc.

Hey, Mikko. I appreciate the recommendations. The Bach Sonatas and Partitas and MI Ultimate Guitar Technique are two that I use, and they’re great. The latter is particular useful for lessons. I enjoyed your version of the Gm Presto from Bach Sonatas and Partitas. It inspired me to work up an arrangement of my own. I’m a bit of a guitar book junky, so I enjoy your reviews of guitar books. Thanks!

This is not a warmup book, but why not. Joseph Viola technique of the saxophone vol. 2 (chord studies) is a book about chords, arpegios and appogiatures with some etudes / examples in all keys.

Hi again, Mikko. A good book for etude like pieces is Jazz Improvisation: The Best Way To Develop Solos Over Classic Changes by Sam Most; ( Warner Bros. Publications). It was recommended to me by the late Frank Quinn, a popular jazz guitar teacher and educator who ran The Frank Quinn School Of Music in Montreal for many decades. No tab or fingerings in the book, but the material is great!

bach's keyboard works; start with the easier ones (the anna magdalena book) then work your way up. read one voice at a time. covers the entire range of the instrument, the melodies usually have really particular turns that force you to think of the fingerings that you're using and where you're playing and more importantly; the music is consistently phenomenal. i play guitar as second instrument to piano, i start on a bit of bach everyday and have never grown bored of his stuff.
