🎹 You can also transpose in minor keys and think about repeating patterns etc based on a chord! Here’s why YOU should practise this 👇 It allows you to learn how to play any kind of riff, lick, melody, pattern etc or take how you may be playing in a certain style and apply it in different musical situations across different songs and in other keys or even from one chord to the next. This is an awesome skill to learn and then get quicker at which even simply helps you become more familiar using scales and therefore learn new music quicker, but even more powerfully, it’s a big part of what allows people to just sit down and play, follow a chord chart, play by ear + work things out by ear. TIPS • Start with shorter, simpler things that don’t go out the scale • Remember to focus on where those notes are in the scale, how the melody moves around it so you can copy that inside the new scale shape

Maybe try finding sheet music that has the finger numbers under each note to help you get the hang of it

Great idea to encourage transposition of common melodies for all sorts of reasons, learning to apply scales better being one. Wish I’d thought of it! Are you deliberately not singing the lyrics? Even casual, approximate pitching might sound more natural.

Yes you can do that with chords too, I have videos on chords of the key where we number chords so we can transpose them. I didn’t do that here though because I just wanted to do a simpler example for people doing this for the first time

I really struggle with crossing over fingers when practicing scales going over 2 octaves with both hands. E.g. when do I cross over after 3 or 4. It’s easy when I do it slowly, but as soon as I go faster I mix it up. Does anyone have any mind tricks?

For my left hand, ascending, I play 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 from my pinky to thumb, and then cross over with my middle finger 6, then complete with index 7 and thumb 1. I do it in reverse on the way down. That seems to be the fastest way for me.

0:05-6 going up and down scales is obviously important to do. so basically back to scales.

I explained in the video how transposing is an important skill for musicians to learn and there's a pinned comment explaining what practising it allows you to get quicker at doing. However, going up and down scales is where to start first and has other technical benefits too... I did say 'as well as'. I'm aware the title says 'instead' but really that's because sometimes do this, sometimes do that would be a rubbish title, so I mean some days do this instead.

Instead of saying always " the sixth note" etc and " next door" etc why not make it easy by using solfa structure

Because unless you’re already very familiar with that system, that's not making it simpler. You can’t really get much simpler than saying here’s the note next door in the scale and I am also trying to place emphasis on the visual side of actually picturing how we move around a scale we're in without getting lost or mixed up. Numbering is much more important to think about on piano anyway, it’s how we describe where we are in the key much more commonly, how we describe intervals that build chord/scales and which degree of the scale chords begin from e.g a 2 5 1 (ii V I) chord progression
