This video takes a look at the recent row that has erupted over the Prague astronomical clock. Purists and historians are up in arms about the changes to the calendar dial that were done by the Czech painter and restorer Stanislav Jirčík in 2018. Jirčík was commissioned to do a copy of the original Calendar dial or board, by the Czech painter Josef Mánes originally completed in 1866; however, after four years, it has to come to light that Jircik’s new version often bears no relationship to the Mane’s original - and people are outraged. This video addresses the changes and also looks at some of the other major changes to the clock that have happened over the last 600 years- since, it is not the first time, that significant changes have been made to the clock.

That "restoration" was total bull$hit! They replaced the dial showing a map of the flat Earth, with a new dial showing the Earth as a globe!!! I'm not saying the Earth is actually flat...but the Azimuthal Equidistant map is the only map that shows all of the continents at once...and that was the map used to create the clock originally. Think of the United Nations map...that is what was once used as the background on the Prague clock.

Luna, thanks for your message. The video was about the changes to the calendar dial not the 'clock' part of the astronomical clock.

The head restorer of the clock is my cousin. He is a very gifted artist and was one of the tiny percent invited to special Art school when he was in public school, during the days of communism.

very interesting. I think the changes look fine. However they are changed far to much from the original.

John, thanks for your message. To be honest, I don't mind the recent changes. I agree. I think the changes look fine and I like the diversity.

The subtlety of the original was lost, the subtlety in both color shifts and anatomy. The only thing I do like is the addition of the dog. That said, he was chosen for the work and paid for the work. All things change. For example, I prefer a zodiac dial with the animals instead of the symbols. Things simply change and modernize. It is a marvel indeed that the clock is still operational and still so wondrous to behold.

Thank you for your comment - yes, the purists were enraged, but as I pointed out , the look of the clock has changed a lot over the centuries anyway...

He was chosen to do the restoration based on his previous work of exact reproductions, and then selfishly did what he wanted instead. This is an incredibly poorly done job, since #1, the artist did not do the work as was requested by the commissioners, #2 the portraits do not even come close to resembling the time period indicated in the original, and are complete re-characterizations, and #3 the people look like they were painted by a community college's sophomore art class. That brunette on the far right in the first comparison looks like Aunt Helen from the Miller family reunion of 1996. This is debasement, at its core, by directly and unquestionably changing the art. People idiotically believe this to be punk or philosophical in some way, but it's truly just a way to get his fame in this time and age of blatant apathy and disrespect to creators. We have firsthand views of life in art for thousands of years, should we really be anything but outraged that people like this are robbing our children, grandchildren, and all of the future generations of what was? Value of art only increases with age- do artists such as this wish for it all to be forgotten and meaningless? A world of tainted art- is that the inheritance we will leave? Just like this Earth, we are not owners of these wonders, but custodians. To corrupt and dishonor such heirlooms is worse than pissing on someone's grave, altering their life's legacy and masterpiece is up there with the highest of insults. The greatest wrong out of all of this, though, is that the work was not supervised and inspected before the "mistake" (is anyone really buying that excuse?) was discovered FOUR YEARS LATER. So many art history degrees out there hard at work. Despite my ranting, which I delivered since you did ask how I, a viewer, felt about this controversy, I would like to say thank you for making this video and raising awareness of the situation. Museums exist and have art conservation teams as well as security for a reason.

Racine, thank you for your well-thought out rant :) And, thank you taking the time to do so; it is much appreciated. I am not sure the restorer intended to be so controversial though- as I point out in the video - it’s not the first time. Vojtech Sucharda took liberties with the remodelling of the statues after the Prague Uprising of 1945 - and secretly railed against the authorities who tried to keep him in check ; however, in spite of that, he did manage to an get astronomer - with a telescope - on to the clock. Given the telescope didn’t arrive in Europe until the early 17th century - some felt that Sucharda was also taking liberties. I, too, was also surprised that the work on the clock, which is considered to be so precious and unique, was not more thoroughly scrutinised. Amazingly, sometimes people don’t check. In 1918, the raging nationalist, Franta Sauer, decided he wanted to pull down the Marian Column, which had stood in Prague’s Old Town Square since 1650; he hated it and saw it as a symbol of the Habsburg monarchy. So, he went to the local fire brigade and told them he had permission to pull down the column and could they supply some fireman a rope and ladder. They duly obliged and, in November 1918, down it came. Nobody checked if he had permission :).
