On the open house, we stopped at the control room simulator and watched a simulated power outage with diesel generators coming online, and a simulated manual reactor trip.

Human error, human misunderstanding of operations and, rogue actions have caused all accidents. If we’re going to make batteries for electric cars, it may as well be by a clean source that does not contribute to global warming.

Having worked in power generation for 20 years (coal plant, now retired), I am familiar with may of the involved systems. I must admit that even seeing a simulated trip of the station made my blood pressure go up. It becomes second nature to react according to your experience and training. I really do sometimes miss sitting at the control board waiting for the next event to occur. The level of training, especially for the nuke guys, is incredible.

My brother worked as a power plant operator in Germany, he told me an interesting thing about german nuclear power plant control rooms: they have no windows! But not for the reason you think. So, there is a power plant operator school in Essen, where every control room of every nuclear power plant is recreated as a simulation room up to the last very detail. If the get a plant or a red recycle bin, or a yellow chair of whatever kind put into the control room of a nuclear power plant, they put the exact same item into the simulator. The immersion you get is 100%. They regularly ask participants of emergency drills how they felt and they say, that after 5minutes into the simulation you have totally forgotten, that you are in a simulation. And that's why they don't have windows in those power plants.
@maxbradley9477

I also think it may be to a radiation risk, in a actual control room i'd imagine radiation can pass more easily through windows, and in the event you're trying to stop the end of the world, those extra seconds count.
@braddawson4496
@braddawson4496 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that is not the reason at all. A nuclear plant control room has no windows because the "control room envelope" is very tightly controlled and has an extremely small allowed in-leakage criteria which must be verified periodically by tracer gas testing.. Even a drain line with a blown water seal can result in a loss of control room boundary. The reason for this is that in the extremely unlikely event of a nuclear accident, the operators in the control room must be protected from the possible radioactive plume that would surround the plant...

"No operator action", lending credence to the one operator, one dog theory of operations. The operator is there to feed the dog, the dog is there to bite the operator if he touches anything. On the serious side, I believe they used the terms "increasing" and "decreasing". These can easily be confused. "Raising/Rising" and "Lowering" should be used.
