I have been quite happy with myself for saving my seeds for the past 3 years with great success. But the 1800's, that is real testimony of success!

My Grandma used to do much the same type of thing. So did my Mom. I've been doing that the last couple of years and it still is the best way to go, in my opinion. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us, Modern Refugee! God bless.

Seeds from the 1800s! Wow, I still remember Walmart wouldn't let you buy seeds during 2020 lockdowns, made me realized everyone has to have their own seeds at home, and start growing food. It was a sign of the times, like a small dark cloud in the sky calling for thunderstorms. Next is buying a small green house, and extend that growing season

We just finished planting our pole beans after soaking in water for a day or 2. All our bean seeds were collected and saved from last year's crop. This pretreatment makes a huge difference. I never heard of your variety of bean, they sound interesting.

I actually just had to dump a tray of green beans as they rotted in the seed trays. I had to plant them in trays this year instead of directly in the ground (its a whole thing, don't ask)... certainly pre-sprouting would have stopped the seeds from rotting before planting. I love that your family has been enjoying these beans for generations. That is extremely cool.

It's mainly pepper seeds that I presprout, but had to do it with sunflowers so.the critters wouldn't dig up the seeds.

Corn can be done this way. They often cost corn in chemical, so take care with the chemicals, if you have it. It usually is pink, so you know. I saw, once, the bean seeds my Grandma had stored. They were like a Pinto bean or Romano. But my Mom did not treasure them, so none were Saved by her. I crossed an Organic and Heirloom Seed Company and placed a big Order. I hunted what Stocks They still had, and bought some unique Seeds! Pink Broom Corn! Coloured Indian Corn, Beans of various types. Cold toleramt Broccoli, Cabbages, Brussel Sprouts, Lettuces, Spinach, etc! Pumpkins of different colours, Hops, Dills, etc. My Bill was almost $500, back in 2021. But i found things i never heard of, such as the Perennials and Cold Tolerant! And Broom Corns?? Popcorns? Lol I made sure i got my Grandma's beans. They Came from Czech, before the War! I have a bolt of handmade in village Linen cloth, my Grandma made! So it IS 100 Years old for certain!

Thank you..may I suggest another way without insulting you or your mom..I used the winter sowing method this year to germinate the pole beans for the first time just to see how well they would do instead of my usual planting the seeds..I started them about 3-weeks ago, did 12 seeds per gallon jug -only did 1-jug- ..the seeds germinated I’m assuming pretty quickly because we had lots of warm weather on my deck where it’s does get direct sun -anyhow..I didn’t check them for 2-1/2 weeks and when I did they were already 4-6 inches tall..I planted them a few days ago so a huge head start to their growing season..I will now only use this method ..hth..

The pre sprouting seeds method is incredibly useful. It iS ESPECIALLY useful if you live in a northern state with long winters. So you might start these in a basement grow room, to get them ready for spring a month or even 2 months early. We do this. But we have to be careful to have extra plants as we usually lose a few in the hardening phase of transitioning them to outside, and also in the transplant phaze. But its still worth it even with a few losses as you are trying to fight for extra time of having the plant producing fruit that much longer before the next winter die off. You are basically fighting with the calendar in long winter states for how much grow time you have; And this idea is cheaper than buying all the stuff for a greenhouse. (Does anyone have tips on reducing losses in the hardening and transplant phase?) I like that you covered this and its something that really can help people. Good job on covering useful topics.

I tried to pre sprout some tomato plants but they wouldn't germinate? I think that it was because of the city water that I was using. But i bought some plants yesterday and have my tomatoes in the dirt. :) Today is going to be a big day with the rest of the planting. Great video brother and GOD bless you brother!
