Now that Mike has been playing the game for a little while he thought it was finally time to try out some new jobs in FF - In today's video he wanted to give Dark Knight a go - and got way more than he bargained for.

So for those of you who have been watching Mike since back when he did WoW, you will recognise this as the return of the TDP's... well sort of anyway. Mike decided it was time to play some other jobs in FF so strap in as he tries to tank a Trial boss for the first time.

Joining a lower level dungeon as a tank and forgetting to turn tank stance on is a time-honored FFXIV tradition. Every tank forgets to do it from time to time.

It’s because it always turns your tank stance off when you scale down but not when you don’t. So if you get into the habit of turning it on for lower level dungeons, you will start turning it off at the beginning of normal dungeons. It’s a nuisance.

I just set up a macro for turning on tank stance /p o/ /merror off /ac “Grit” It makes starting level synced dungeons and trials less of a pain remembering to turn on tank stance.

@@tarkett8529 That works,... until you already have your stance on, and get into an instance where you aren't synced down, in which case it will turn it off. Tank stance is unfortunately only a toggle, there is no direct "on" or "off" modifier like in some other macroable controls.

@@AeriFyrein it has a cooldown though, so you can just use the skill twice at the start of any dungeon - if its off it'll turn on and the CD will trigger, which will prevent the second use from turning it off, and if stance is on it'll turn off and then youll immediately turn it on again. Been using that method for years and I can honestly say that I haven't forgotten stance since.

Duuude, I was 100% the same when I started a year ago. Tanked WoW for like... 12+ years and had total tanxiety coming to a new game. Big secret... Tanking in XIV is both chill af and the easiest role in the game. Once you get used to weaving your oGCD defensives, and timing them out for bigger fights later, it's a breeze.

I had this same feeling when I had to tank the 8 man boss fight of 3.3 MSQ. When the CS finished the other tank didn’t have their stance on so I knew it was in me. I was scared and nervous but excited. I’m so glad I got to do it though. It was such a thrilling fight and it was the final piece to getting rid of the tankxiety I had been experiencing up to that point.

A lot of tanks seem to miss this apparently, use the ability Arm's Length for big pulls. It's primary purpose is it prevents knockbacks, but it has a secondary effect of putting a 20% slow on anything that attacks you for 15 seconds.

It's funny, because I never remember to use it for knock backs but always use it to slow enemies. It's strange that people say it's primarily for knock backs when it's so much rarer for me to use it for that. Even on melee DPS it's a nice defensive cooldown for shit like open world content

Probably cause they have to hit u pretty quickly within 4 seconds to actually get the 15 sec slow thing and some use it and run which is dumb as well but yea overlooked alot

I wish Slow was more clear in what it means. A lot of debuffs don't really explain what they do in an accurate way. Like, does it reduce auto attack speed too? Or is it just anything that has a cast bar? And for Interrupt, it'd be nice to know what that actually means. Formerly Interrupt was known as two different things: Silence and Pacify, and neither of which were terribly well understood. Silence was at least more understood than Pacify because it has a history of being in games, but the latter less so, and it wasn't always obvious which to use. It could certainly use a bit more clarify on what exactly each status ailment does, I think.

I only started tanking over the last 2 months after having been DPS for years. One of the first things I was taught by experienced tanks was to use Arms Length on big mobs. Tanking is a lot more fun that I envisioned when I first started

I have started ignoring Arm's length in dungeons for the most part. Reason? WAR. For reference, WAR is the last tank I'm leveling, and I did use arm's length on the other tanks.

For reference, Preach, Reprisal is reducing damage done to all party members, so it's handy for reducing raid/party wide damage too.

Specifically, it reduces "damage dealt by nearby enemies" it matters for your positioning some times.

Yes, this. I like to use it before the large party-wide AoEs just to give the healers a little extra push by nerfing the raidwide damage. It's not much, but every little bit helps, right?

Just to defend Copperbell Mines slightly, when ARR was freshly dropped and all of us fresh-faced level 15ish players were doing our first dungeons, damage output was a LOT lower. For instance, the first boss was a race to kill things before the party was overwhelmed while enemies kept spawning. Also, on the second boss dps had to actually pay attention to kill the spriggan that appears because it would kill the bomb during the slime boss (now the spriggan gets 1-shot). Additionally, we couldn't ignore the adds on the last boss because they would break open another wall before we could kill the boss and then more adds would flood in and kill everyone. To be fair though, even back then once people figured out what they were doing and got some better gear than the level 5 stuff, the challenge because similar to what it is now. But they're meant as introductory content for people who have never played an MMO before and have no gear or have no idea what they're doing (and are balanced for that) and imo judged on that criteria I think the devs did a pretty good job and perhaps it shouldn't be considered the "worst". Great video though! Looking forward to seeing your journey of tanking.

Yeah if they just tweaked the boss health to be higher it wouldn't be a simple DPS race. Believe they made bosses longer and tankier in later expansions to prevent this from happening, also the stat squish I believe helped slow down stomping bosses too.

Well obviously it’s a but silly to assume it was always as it is today and the context of the dungeon does matter, but none of the other introductory dungeons have quite the same issues, even today. Maybe that’s cause they kept it really simple so reducing the threat level of the bosses and mobs over time didn’t have as negative an effect, but even so there’s still really no dungeon in the game as it is today that is quite as bad a time as Copperbell Mines. If it feels better you could always note that it’s nothing personal to this dungeon. Just that there had to be a worst dungeon and this one lost the draw.

As a tank main I can say even with the thousands of hours I've played, I will still run into a dungeon, and mid way through the first, or second pull be like "Oh my tank stance."

Same or arguably worse goes for kardia, fairy and dance partner. Since you have to reapply dance partner every time when farming a lvl 90 trial ('why did this run take longer, no one died.... oh'). Forgetting Kardia and wondering why the tank drops despite u hitting the mobs just hurts but the worst experience is to place the fairy in the middle of a dungeon boss arena and then notice it's missing on the next wall to wall, not only less auto heals but also blocking half of your skills and having a cast time to resummon it T.T pls just make that an instant ogcd or let it follow us automatically upon moving away too far, it induces painful panic when you have a drk at hand (war is fine you can just leave them alone with sacred soil for a while xD)

Don't get too nervous about healers letting you fall low. Experienced healers will know how low they can let you fall before they must heal you. Some may not have that completely figured out at first, but learning how to keep the tank alive without having to constantly heal them is a major part of learning to play healer. Just focus on tanking and you'll be fine

Yeah basicly your health should only be worried about in checking if you need to pop cd's but thats more the case the higher lvl you get the rest is for the healer to worry about. Healers can always easily keep up when defensives are being used

A healer's job is not to heal you: it is to keep you alive. Based on the design of the game (at least nowadays), they are absolutely meant to be dealing damage when not keeping you alive. A lot of people don't always agree with that design, and for most things you can make up for a healer not DPSing. But it is 100% how the game is designed now, and the difference between having a healer that only heals, and one that deals damage is pretty major. Barring a few situations, this is one of the easiest ways to tell how experienced a player is at the green DPS jobs.

not to mention that some healers want you low for some of their ability to do more, astros ED and macrocosm, scholars excog, whm benediction - also recommended to use tank invuln proactivly to get more than one use per dungeon aswell as making sure healer resources dont get drained super fast in the first pull (DRK + sch, ast or sge being the exception)

a somewhat little known fact; critical heals generate more progress for the limit break bar. Plus the damage output of that boss is so low you could technically sit on the ground as long as you have aggro and avoid the bomb explosion.

Preach if a spell can be interrupted the cast bar will be flashing. Though most spells are pretty hard to interrupt when you see them for the first time (quick cast times, at least for the spam cast abilities)

I believe its also red in colour and normally its yellow/gold if you can't interrupt. In that case just try stunning.

I make the target cast bar large and centered so that I do not miss the flashing cast bar since those spells do insane amounts of damage usually

Problem with the interrupts for me is that the input lag the game seems to have. As in, the cast time happens long before the actual animation so I keep missing any shorter cast interrupts. And wasting interrupts like that means I miss the actual skill I need to interrupt even though it has a longer cast.

There's an option to automatically skip intro and boss cutscenes that you've already seen before, it's nice for levelling alt jobs.

When you were talking about defensives, Arm's Length also counts (except when you need it to halt a knockback). The Additional Effect slows enemy attacks which means less damage incoming for 15 seconds.

here's a little explanation as to why you had titan on leveling roulette, leveling roulette has every dungeon except for level 50, 60 ,70, 80, and 90 dungeons, and it also as the normal versions of Ifrit, Titan and Garuda, since they are the only four player trials, every other trial are in there own duty roulette, that unlocks at level 50

Yeah Ifrit , Titan and Garuda 4 man trials are thrown with the leveling dungeon roulette cause they are basically tutorial for whats to come in level 50 end game trials

actually incorrect. Even on leveling roulette you can get dungeons of later expansions! source: me. Got for example Sohm Al from HW and Doma Castle in there! and yes i was definitely in lvl roulette and not in 50/60 etc

The job system in this game really got to me - I'm not even done with Heavensward and have 8 combat jobs (spread among all 3 roles) at 60 and all the gathering/crafting ones at 50/55 It's hard to resist the urge of trying new stuff when it's so easy and comfortable to do in FFXIV

@@michealsoto6722 You can also juggle classes for the same effect if you want to play at-level on multiple classes. Basically you get 100% bonus for any class that's 1 full level below your highest, so for example when I play, I run Summoner until I'm a ~3 levels over the current quest recommended level, then run Red mage until it gets to 1 level behind the Summoner, then push up Summoner again. this keeps RDM always on +100% xp bonus. You also get just enough XP from levelling quests to do this without making dungeons a requirement while you're questing (and thus minimize time spent in queues)

The only “raid” bosses you will fight in leveling roulette are Ifrit,Titan and Garuda since they are while technically trials,made super easy and a relic of ARR systems

I’m honestly surprised you dont see a lot of tanks using stuns on trashmobs, specially paladins, whenever I wall to wall I always spam stun on Pal to ease up the dmg taken.

@@unloyal4847 It's probably because jobs can get quite complex in FF14, with a lot of buttons to press. So people see a button that doesn't work on most Bosses, and rank it at a lower priority than the rest, because trashmobs are usually not where the difficulty lies. Same with Arm's length. I think this is what differenciates a good tank from an average one, and the thing that differenciate a great tank from a good one is parse efficiency.

@@unloyal4847 I don't do it with my Pala that often because i believe the cd is more worth using on AoE for getting throught the Dungeon faster/killing faster . When you pop your mitigation your Heal loses some ogcd and doesn't sacrifice damage potential . A Pala rotating through the enemy to do Shieldbash on every enemy might reduce the burst of Damage, but the fight takes much longer so i don't see that being a good way to do it. The ogcd stun is fine though

Flood of darkness isn’t just to keep up a buff, it also deals large damage. This means every server tick that your mp is maxed out, you miss out on damage. So please learn to spam that button and prevent your mp from overcapping.

By the way, doing leveling roulette more than once isn't really worth since you don't get the xp boost, better to just do the highest level dungeon from the regular duty finder after the first one

When I started leveling alt jobs I used to queue leveling roulette only ... BAD IDEA the roulette only gives exp bonus the first time of the day, after that you should queue for the highest level dungeon available

Or better yet. Start with the highest level dungeon and do the leveling roulette last since the bonus in exp is % based so more experience by the end of the day of grind than at the start.

The other roulettes also give XP, not just the leveling one. On top of that there are FATEs as well as Beast Tribe dailies, and of course there's Bozja once you hit 71.

This was a really cool introductory series for someone who might feel apprehensive about jumping into the tank role. Despite being one of the easier roles in the game, being the tank carries the responsibility of pacing the dungeon so that can be intimidating for people. It was cool to see Mike figure things out too.

A word of advice, kill every mob before running to the next pack. Your hp and mp regenerate very quickly out of combat, but if you leave with 1 mob alive you're still in combat, so at some point your healer wont have any mana to heal you

I love tanking in this game (so naturally I leveled all my tanks to lvl 90 before anything else). I get to control the pace of the game and facing bosses face-to-face makes me feel like a badass

Keeping up Gear is very important for tanks while levelling, because it makes the healers job a lot easier and you can make larger pulls significantly speeding up the run. That’s why you usually di the daily roulette and then your most level appropriate dungeon. Nice Videos, keep up the good work :)

This was a fun video! 2 tips: 1) The levelling roulette is once per day. Once you get the daily reward, it's a lot better to just do the highest level dungeon you have access to. 2) Flood of Shadow (and later Edge of Shadow) are off the global cooldown, meaning you can weave them in between your other abilities.

Love this! Such a great idea to show you tackling each job. I am all about seeing this. I started trying tank after doing heals for my main. I enjoy it, got so excited after tanking Ifrit. You are maybe a level or so ahead. I just hit 30 on him tonight. I started with warrior-- going Old School. Drk and Gbr are more end game, and the whole Savage and higher isn't my shtick. Good luck, and can't wait to see more.

I main the tank classes and they're all pretty fun. admittedly dark knight hasn't quite done it for me yet, but its my last sitting below 90 so I'll see how that goes. From my experience, Paladin is the safest to play when you are super tired or tipsy cus its really hard to mess up, Gunbreaker is the most fun for just button mashy huge damage, and Warrior is the third healer that is just too angry to die.

Warrior is weird, because paladin is all around amazing, and gunbrrskwr deals the most damage. It just has the most health really. DRK from what I hear use to be really really cool back when it was first introduced and changes over time have gimped it

That's correct DRK still has the highest dps but GNB is only very slightly behind. Also don't give in to the DRK whiners guys, they're worse off in dungeons in terms of defense (will probably be looked at in 6.1) but as long as everyone is pressing their buttons there should be no issues, as sage/scholar I even liked to heal DRK a bit more then GNB.

Appreciate Preach for trying out other roles in ffxiv most tend to stick to dps when streaming ♥️ excited to watch u do tanking and healing, as well as some melee and physranged action The awesome thing abt this game is that once u have one of each role, the game DOES reward u with juicy stories, esp the ShB one where finishing all the role quests rewards u with MORE! LORE!

My first time tanking really made me nervous cause I thought I'd mess up and kill the group, but thanks to the community and the groups I was paired with, made me more confident and now I have become a tank main with the tips of others! Keep it up preach! I'm rooting for you!

Real glad you are starting with tank in trying out new jobs. Alot of new players are afraid of tanking starting out so hopefully they will see it is not so bad and give it a shot too!

If you follow the lore of the game and aren't going to level up every single job for their job quests the role quests and crafting job delivery quests are worth doing at least. The Endwalker healer role quest in particular was stellar and the melee DPS one wasn't far behind. The only role quests I haven't done yet are the tank ones but I look forward to delving into them soon also as Dark Knight after experiencing it's story.

Bit of a tip! Flood/Edge of darkness is an OGCD ability, you can cast it between your 1-2-3 casts, for example, on your keybinds, it'll be 1 -> R -> 2 -> R and so on. You will have more sources and spenders on MP, but you should never let your MP cap on DRK

The nice thing about tanking in this game is most of your responsibilities are unique to the tanks and usually just involve using reprisal on raid damage that messes the party up the most, while using your rampart (90 second) or 2 minute (shadow wall on drk) in tandem with your unique tank cooldown to deal with tank busters or mechanics that deal tank damage. Even better is these get way more intuitive to mitigate as you get into stormblood content and beyond. You also have your invuln skill on all 4 tanks that have different applications depending on the tank you chose. Paladin gets a 7 minute cooldown invincibility buff that prevents most debuffs (vuln stacks especially) and lets you skip really rough tank busters, usually twice a fight. Gunbreaker gets basically the same thing with a slightly shorter cooldown, with the downside of needing some heals before the buff ends. Warrior has the shortest cd by far, and just makes you survive all damage at 1 hp for the duration. Doesn't stop debuffs though since you aren't invincible, so that gives pld and gnb some nice nuance for farming annoying bosses. Dark knight has the trickiest to use by far though since it requires a full heal after you've hit 1 hp or you'll die once the 10 second invuln expires. Dungeons are also uniquely nuanced on tanks, because most people want wall to wall pulls, so you can learn how best to use your mitigation cooldowns so you can won't overlap them too much over the 1 to 2 minutes you're getting slaughtered by all those mobs before the next boss. These unfortunately highlight drk's worst asset in living dead, because it requires a full heal, but you still take damage the whole time, so you could get all the healing but still just die immediately after the debuff ends.

First time I've ever tanked in ANY GAME was in FFXIV about 6 months ago with my Marauder. My experience with the community was nothing but awesome. Evident when I mention it be my first time in dungeon and tanking = get carried. This video had a similar feeling when I first did stuff. Great video Mike!

The tank job quests in a nut shell, (no spoilers): Dark Knight: The WoL really REALLY needs therapy, and being a Dark Knight is a form of therapy. Warrior: Being a warrior is all about controlling your inner rage, and finding love 💕 Paladin: Holy shit we are boring. Gun Breaker: History is really cool, and vengeance IS COOLER. Anyway, let's go invent central heating.

It has been such a long Journey that Preach forgot that the normal mode for the three OG primals were 4-man 'dungeons' in the story-mode. Then I went back and realized it has almost been 6 frikken months since those initial run-throughs of ARR. No wonder!
