I tested 5 popular preamps with electric guitar, acoustic guitar, vocals, and kick drums. Can you hear the differences? Give them a listen and tell me which ones you like the best!
The differences are subtle but they're definitely there. No editing or EQing was done to the sound clips other than bring levels up/down.
MAKE SURE TO LISTEN ON SOME GOOD SPEAKERS OR HEADPHONES!
Presonus AudioBox 1818VSL
Focusrite Clarett OctoPre
Presonus Studio Channel

The vocal differences were evident when u said Check 1, 2 Testing coz u said it louder and shows how each preamp handles louder volumes and that is very polished smooth mids almost like a quasi compressor acting on it. Thanks for the shootout.

Great video….and you’re absolutely correct. The direct answer is any one of those would’ve worked. I’m a Presonus fan simply because it’s an all inclusive package. I agree with the Focusrite “air” function (which worlds great for snares and cymbals). We live in a golden age of gear. Grace a whatever interface you can afford, and then use a high-end plug-in API, SSL, Neve….all have KILLER plugin’s now that have a 99% accuracy to the hardware. Make sure the instrument is in tune, and sounds good. Short of that, the rest is learning the capability of the recording gear you’re using. If you’re into the old 70’s and 80’s productions that were all recorded on an analogue board (using all the same preamps for everything)….that’s VERY achievable now, as far as gear goes. This was a GREAT comparison….thanks for taking the time. Very cool of your.

I actually liked the PreSonus studio channel a lot. It has a nice "soft" high end - a little "smear" - it isn't as transparent or clean as the AML's and some others but it has a nice character.

Definitely! I use the studio channel mainly for vocals. The tube saturation cuts off a lot of the harsh high end and and makes a much warmer sound overall.

13:01 13:10 13:19 13:27 13:32 I own the Focusrite Clarett OctoPre, and can tell you the kick sound is just like mine, but there's an air feature that adds a little more upper mid's that helps even more if needed.Also the warm is the weakest for the drums, i heard the exact same sound from that kick on another video, but the best for distorted guitars I'd say.

With the technology that's out there nowadays there's no need to over spend on a trillion dollar mic pre just because it says Neve or Avalon. There are affordable companies out here that are killing it with their products. I myself love the Warm Audio mic pres. I own the WA12 MK2 black edition, and I chain an LL2A compressor limiter from Little Labs behind it. Best vocal chain I've ever owned.

I'd pick : - Focusrite for Acoustic GTR: it sounds most balanced overall without having any kind of harsh frequencies - Warm audio or Presonus for electric GTR: Warm audio for cleans and Presonus for distorted gtr having most pleasing /round sound - For kick drum I'd choose easily AML cause its most pronounced and has most character, sounds like its boosting hi-mids the right way compared to others. - For male vocals Warm audio, for having less harshness on high end ( AML propably suits female vocals the best ).

Thank you for the demo. I was wondering if the sound quality of these preamps was affected by the AudioBox 1818VSL. I understand it is great in the price range. I already have the Presonus Tube Preamp and I love it. I have had several Focusrite Interfaces over the years, from the Saffire Pro 24 DSP (my first interface) and Saffire Pro 40 (with an Octopre MKII Dynamic) to the Scarlett 18i20 (with Scarlett Octopre) and I never had any problems with them. But I wondered how good the sound could be, so I decided to try out the RME 802 Fireface. And WOW!!! The sound quality was distinctly better. Hard to describe, but lets say, smoother and richer than the Focusrites. At 5 times the price, I can't say it was 5 times better, but it really was perceptibly "better" than the Focusrites. Both interfaces were used with a Neumann TLM107 through a UA6176 which, by themselves, produced amazing sound. But the RME definitely made a difference in the sound quality. Unfortunately, a period of low income forced me to sell most of this wonderful gear to pay the rent and I had to start over. I am impressed with the quality of the Presonus Tube Preamp (through a Scarlett 18i20) but I was also looking at the ISA Two, which led me to your video.
@gweeds334
@gweeds334 2 жыл бұрын
That's a really good point. I also thought about that alot seeing as my "higher quality" preamps are still technically running through the presonus interface. So that has to have something to do with the quality. I've heard that using the line inputs via TRS and turning the gain all the way down on the presonus will bypass the preamps. But I've never known this to be certain. Regardless there is a definite tonal difference. I've never heard of the RME but sounds like a really nice piece of gear!! There's no doubt A/D converters have a lot to do with the quality. I'm looking to upgrade to the presonus quantum. Being a studio one user I tend to navigate toward Presonus products.

@@gweeds334 Really a matter of isolating the weak link in the audio chain. It will only sound as good as that weak link (if Presonus can be said to be weak). It was just something that was on my mind as I was listening to your demos.

@gweeds334
@gweeds334 Жыл бұрын
I wouldn't say its an upgrade but rather an alternative tool to pair with the quantum 2626. You would not be able to use the Studio channel on its own as it is not an interface. It's only a mic pre with built in compression and EQ. I mainly use it when I record vocals. It adds a lot of saturation and tonal qualities that you can't achieve with the XMAS preamps. You would send the microphone to the Studio Channel and into the Quantum 2626 and into your DAW. The XMAX pres on the Quantum 2626 are VERY comparable to the Clarett. Very clean with a lot of headroom. Hope this helps! please let me know if you have any other questions. Im happy to help.

@@gweeds334 Thanks for the input! I was going to sell my 2626 (that I bought for $400 flat. great deal) to find the new Clarett+8pre which is $999. so I could get better pres and converters. but now I'm thinking that's a waste! I could save that money and buy quality standalone mic pres. I like ISA mic pres. $350 per channel on the used market.... The Aphex 207 is catching my ear too

He's running both the Warm and the AML with output trim maxed, thus negating most of the "character" they might impart on the signal by driving the transformers.

The difference between a high-end preamp and a low-end preamp such as the ones built into a PreSonus interface isn't that big. It's small. The difference between a high-end microphone and low end microphone is small. The difference between a high-end compressor and low compressor is small. The difference between a high-end converter and low and converter is small... BUT all of those small differences can add up to a big difference. This includes the actual instruments themselves. A song that is produced with high-end gear every step of the way will always sound wayyy better than the same song produced with low end, consumer level equipment. This is also the reason most home studios can never produce commercial quality results.... unless they are using pro level equipment and have live rooms and control rooms that are full dialed in.

Absolutely right. Well said. A lot of people will scoff at higher end gear saying that you don't need to spend a lot of money on gear. And while that's true, you don't NEED to, all the gear you use adds up to an overall final product. Glad you found the video useful. I really like the 412 on drums but prefer the AMLs on most everything else.
@madcaprex
@madcaprex 2 жыл бұрын
@@gweeds334 with all that said, it all depends for the sound that you're going for. There's a time and place for even crappy equipment. Heck, look at Jack White... wildly successful successful partly because of crappy gear. Haha.
@madcaprex
@madcaprex 2 жыл бұрын
@@gweeds334 yeah, that's why I was interested in hearing some examples. Being an API clone, the wa-412 theoretically should sound awesome on drums. Glad you confirmed it. Also, makes sense that a lot of other sources sound pretty good on the aml's. Neve style circuits tend to soften the attack ever-so-slightly.... making things sound warm and fat. API style circuits tend to be slightly more aggressive on the attack and that's why many people like them for the modern drum sound and such. Speaking of aml, I recently put together a pair of their pultec clones. They definitely sound pretty good but I'm reserving my opinion until i have opportunity to compare them against a real pultec or higher-end pultec clone. I would be interested in hearing some other AML equipment.

While there can be a lot of truth to what you’re saying, legends like Michael Wagner or Beau Hill can get a killer “radio ready” production from the gear that’s available today to the average home studio musician. As a matter of fact, Beau Hill just mentioned that in a recent interview. That’s the beauty of purchasing gear today….you don’t absolutely HAVE to have a $50K SSL console to accomplish a great sounding recording. Would it make things easier?…..potentially. Because of the technology, and high-end plugins, etc… we have access to today, knowing your gear’s potential is *infinitely* more important than what gear you own.

To each set of ears it's different I guess but I just didn't like the Focusrite. It had a harshness tht I'm sensitive to. All the others sounded good. I actually liked the Studio Channel on everything but the 1st guitar test which is surprising. I see it used for cheap at my GC often. If I had rank them it would be #1 AML, #2 Warm, #3 Both Presonus tied. (SC better vocal, the other better 1st guitar, all else identical.) #4 Focusrite but last by a wide margin. If I'm being 100% honest any of them besides the Focusrite would make the same song. None of the top 3 will improve an actual song. Yes, the 1073 clone is marginally better when solo'd side by side but it's so minor. It's like this.. Say ur grilling a good steak. U want to melt butter & brush it on the steak as u grill. Now let's say you're trying different sticks of butter. Sure 1 stick of butter is going to taste better than another brand to u. Will it matter at the end when you eat the steak? No. Still I love the demo. Great job on ur end. A clean, fast demo, w/o any bs. Definitely a good ass video. It did teach me to never buy or use tht Focusrite.

What do you really know about vacuum tube mic preamps? or vacuum tube triodes? I know a lot. I design and produce a few vacuum tube mic preamps. Before that I upgraded junk consoles. A vacuum tube mic preamp is a voltage system that creates EVEN Harmonics. This varies with the amount of drive put to the tube. Saying they are similar is a mistake. Fundamentally, they are different and need to be used differently. They need to be designed and built differently. Your video here, misses the point completely. You know there is a massive difference in your Fender amps and some solid state guitar amps. The difference in sound is Day and Night. Presonus is junk. I have known people who tried and tried to use them if only for voice and they failed to get a consistent decent sound. In a recording studio application it is much worst. It costs more to build high end tube mic preamps because of the parts required. I think you are misleading your viewers, mostly because you are not experienced in the use of high end Pro Audio vacuum tube mic preamps. Simple solid state preamps are designed to be affordable to musicians. They are cheap. To a studio person like me, they are junk. To purchase a Pro Audio vacuum tube mic preamp like the one I make, It will cost you about $3,800 and up for a single channel. That is what Mackie was about. I knew him. Affordable to musicians who had no money. That is why his consoles suck. They are cheap for a reason. I have been in this businesss for a long time. Since the late 1960s. I am a published silicon valley engineer. I am also a musician. When you learn about the differences you will start seeing audio in color. That is a metaphor. Right now, your world is in Black and White. Go to the URL MosswareProAudio. Don't Google it, dot the typical extension. Read what I say there about how my vacuum tube mic preamp. I am not differentiating my design from low end designs. I am comparing it to Pro Audio designs that cost in the area of $5,000. Take a look, then tell me what you see.

Why don't you open up the schematic for the Presonus (just as an example) and tell me how many tube stages are used per individual channel? The designs I looked at only had one, in the cathode follower output. They can say it is a vacuum tube preamp if they do that. In Pro Audio mic preamps THE ENTIRE AUDIO PATH is vacuum tube. It is a very different sound. People who don't know this are being robbed.
