Using a microphone pre-Amp and pre-processing before your audio signal is fed to your audio interface, allows you to control, manage and shape your sound before the signal is recorded/printed in your DAW. Adding some colouration, warmth and maybe grit with a tube amp or tube amp simulation may allow you to commit to a sound you like or prefer.
In this video, using my MXL 550 Large Condenser Microphone connected to my PreSonus Studio Channel Microphone Tube Pre-amplifier, I run through the settings and options to demonstrate available audio processing.

I also tried with the same cable but it doesn't work. In the technical data sheet of the Rode NT1A it says that it can work with either 24 or 48 volt Phantom Power but does the AT2020 only work at 48 volts? And something a little strange.

@RecordingStudio9
@RecordingStudio9 6 жыл бұрын
The Peak button sets the low and high EQ bands to Shelf Curve or Peak Curve, to increase or decrease the level at a set frequency (Peak), or from that frequency point up or down. Peak is usually used to notch out certain frequencies, where Shelf is used for broader range increase/decrease.

You can use the TRS line level output into your mbox line in. Make sure the Studio Channel output level is on 0 (zero) and use the mbox input gain to adjust for best audio level.

@RecordingStudio9
@RecordingStudio9 7 жыл бұрын
I'm pretty sure the audio signal is sent to both XLR and LIne level outputs at the same time, and I see no reason why you could not use it both at the same time. Though I have never tested this, if plugging a TRS Jack disconnects XLR output. I know you cannot use both XLR and LINE level inputs at the same time. LINE level precedes XLR, so if you connect a TRS Jack plug, XLR is disconnected.

You have the tube drive at about 30. What do you have the gain on the tube at, and what exactly does that do? The knob furthest to the left. Thanks.
@RecordingStudio9
@RecordingStudio9 7 жыл бұрын
First knob on the left is the input gain knob. More input gain, more signal to the tube, as well as the Tube knob determines the amount of the signal fed to the tube. As I explain in the video, the signal is split before the tube, one path sent direct while the other trough the tube, amount set by the Tube Knob, and both mixed back again.

I love my 990. It's sort of the bitch in my studio, I always give it the things I'm scared to give to my good mics! Always sounds great though. I've done vocals, acoustic guitar, clean amps, loud distorted amps, kick mic, and snare mic. Performed great on all of them but I'd say shines at acoustic guitar and as a drum mic.

@RecordingStudio9
@RecordingStudio9 7 жыл бұрын
Make sure the Bluetube v2 preamp VU level does no go above -3db at the loudest point. Then with your 1818VSL, using the VSL mixer software, make sure you adjust the input level knob up until the levels show enough signal, about 75% (since there is no db metering on the VSL mixer software), then you are good to go. You can always go a bit lower, but don't go too hot (too loud) in leveling. Hope this helps. P.S. You might get better signal if you use the JACK outputs into inputs 3 & 4 on 1818VSL.

You don't necessarily need it, but I use it every time on any mic, vocal or acoustic guitar, before any mixer or interface. Yes, even when I had a PreSonus StudioLive Ser 3 mixer. I got it hooked up to my focusrite, but a cant get any sound throught the microphone. Also can you use the presonus studio channel after you record? then mixdown or master. Also the VU meter is moving when i turn up the volume on the focusrite
@RecordingStudio9
@RecordingStudio9 6 жыл бұрын
I assume you have the microphone connected to the Microphone XLR input of the Studio Channel and TRS line out to Focusrite Line input. While you have the Output level to 0, increase the Input Gain till you have about -6db on the meter at its loudest singing, then adjust the Focusrite Line input till you get good audio. I can't see how Focusrite's volume can effect Studio Channel VU meter, unless you have wrong connections.

I have the TRS going into my input 1 in the back of my focusrite 18i8 and the mic is pluged into the mic input on the back of the presonus studio channel. everthing is at 0 o 12oclock. In studio one I have a mono track on input one but cant record any sound or hear anything
@RecordingStudio9
@RecordingStudio9 6 жыл бұрын
Looks like you are connecting the TRS output of the Studio Channel into the OUTPUT 1 of 18i8. You need to plug it into input 3 or 4 at the front (inputs 1 & 2 are guitar inputs), then set the track input in studio one to 3 or 4 respectively. That's why in you previous message, VU was moving when adjusting level on Focusrite. You REALLY need to read your manuals, before you damage your equipment.

The compressor will reduce the dynamic range of the vocal thus making it more pronounced in the band. Depending on how your sound system is set, this may introduce feedback if not set correctly. Basically, if done correctly, the vocal will sound louder.

From my experience with this unit you're better off saving your money and just use your interface's preamp. Keep your eyes on the input level and process any compression and eq with your DAW plugins. But, if you want extra, useless bass rumble and buzz then go ahead and use the Presonus Studio Channel as your main mic pre.

@RecordingStudio9 8 жыл бұрын
It does not matter who or what instrument you are recording. You need to learn and understand what you are trying to record and know your gear how it works and apply. Example, If you are recording a bass guitar, we know it produces low frequencies and has low frequency range, so you adjust your gear to manipulate those frequencies till you achieve the result you are after. If you cannot work it out, it means you need to learn more about your gear on how it works, before you even try to record a bass sound. Eg. You need to learn how your hammer and nails works, before trying to build a shed. Knowing comes from practice. Hope that helps.

An announcer is the person that is talking. If you don't have experienced person with good voice articulations, no matter what equipment you add, it will not sound good. Equipment enhance the audio signal. Good original audio signal, good enhancement, bad original audio signal, bad result. What I'm trying to say is that if you want your voice to sound good for radio or podcasting, first you need to make sure your voice sounds good with even basic microphone. This comes from vocal training for radio talk. The equipment will just make it better. Than all you need is a compressor to level and balance it all out and make it sound good to the listener. Hope this helps.

I just got one of these and it's completely useless. I'm just going straight into my Apogee Firewire Duet for a much cleaner sound without any annoying bass rumbling and buzzing that this units puts out. Just use your DAW eq and compressors and you'll save yourself some money.
