Looks great! Once again our building processes are very much the same. Good job Patrick.

Thanks Dane, I love neck carving. I've had thoughts about custom router cutters or routing jigs to do necks quicker but I think I'd miss hand carving.

I’ve heard it said that all you have to do is remove everything that doesn’t look like a neck! 😆 Such an enjoyable build!

I am struggling with a piece of maple I cut last year, trying to find a way to make a body out of it. Your video is a nice break. The neck is looking great, I used your technique for my SG neck which turned out great. Thanks!

I'm sure you will sort something out with the maple, could get heavy though. A mate of mine had an old Gibson Ripper bass, solid maple, nearly broke his back!!! I'm really happy to finally get the neck to this stage :)

@@Adventuresfromtheshedofdreams I thought about the weight also so I am going to just do a maple top. Thanks.

Love NECK CARVE DAY!.. fantastic.. Question?? your templates for initial carve at the first fret and 12 or 14th.. do you carve until you reach proper depth to top of freetboard or leave it s bit short for finish work later? I assume your templates measure to the top of the fingerboard (upside down at this stage) to get the correct feel. If this is the case.. how does Gibson turn out necks in the 80's that were so different? I have an 1986 SG-62 with a very thin neck 0.80" at 1st fret and 0.82 at the 12th.. but others have chunkier necks of the same vintage.. back in the day we were at the mercy of the luthier I guess.. Thank you so much for these vids.. when you post them in the States I need an afternoon break from work and watch them.. cheers.!!

With the templates I have marks for the top and bottom of the fret board and a centre line, I always leave the initial cuts a little bit fat so there is plenty of material for finishing. I'm not sure how Gibson went about neck carving in the 80's but I've heard plenty of talk about 50-60s profiles being consistent enough to identify one year from another, perhaps it's that famous Gibson quality control at play! I'm glad you are enjoying the videos and that they give you an excuse for a break :)

If i remember quite a lot of Precision Basses used to have Dead spots in the necks, due to the shear size of the necks. This isn't one of those!

I hope so, it's my first bass neck so it's a bit trial and error :)

In my understanding dead spots mostly come from poorly seated frets, but your Idea is interesting
