OH MY GOD BLAKE!!!!!!!!!!! You just saved me I have NO IDEA how many hundreds of hours........ I have been doing some night sky composites lately, and I actually went with a brush at 500% zoom masking out the tree-line in one... 😬😬😬 It worked out Amazingly, but I spent at least 30 hours doing it! I just had the idea to use blend if on them and I shrunk that time down to about 60 SECONDS!!! I'm SOO HAPPY right now! 🤣🤣🤣🤣

I watched this is pieces as I was working on a photo. Since I was used to using PS for this, I was not too excited about it, but just trying to learn if it would be useful to me. It turned out that doing this with the RAW gave me better results than doing it with PS. Having the extra RAW data to work with added something over what I had done with this photo before. I put it in the PSD I had above the base layer and even though I had to redo the adjustments It was better than using PS for the masking. This was on a good photo that the gallery is selling. Learning I can make it even better is exciting. I am starting to understand this. It gives me a better starting point for PS which makes everything better.

The precision you can get with this update is a nice feature. I do wish it was as intuitive as it was originally. Grab a grad filter, drag it, go to luminance mask and drag the slider to target the tones. SO MUCH easier

I find the New Masking features in LR and CR to be phenomenal, but there’s one issue I’ve noticed that I haven’t seen anyone mention, maybe it’s only me that notices this, but the issue is that when you’re making these adjustments with the masks in LR & CR, it is not using the same full Raw data it would be using if you was just editing in the basics panel, curves, HSL, camera calibration…etc. I know because I tested it by making an adjustment in the basic panel, then resetting and starting over again and created a linear gradient mask over the imagine and used the same settings I used when I edited it only in the basic panel. The first edit with the basic panel clearly looked different, it used more Raw data information than it did when I made the linear gradient mask adjustment. So It seems like when you’re editing with masks it’s editing it almost like a jpeg(but obviously better), but it isn’t using all the same raw data that it would be using if you just edited it in the basic panel. So I would like to know your thoughts on this. Thank you! P.S. i figured out a way to edit only the Raw data, and that is by opening up the image From LR or CR into PS as a smart object, then go to select > smart object > and click on > New smart object to create a second smart object layer. Now you can double click on the layer and it opens up in CR so you can edit different parts of that same full raw photo, and create masks in PS. Doing it this way uses all of the Raw data. Or that’s what it seems like to me. Anyway would love to hear your feed back! Thank you!

Photoshop should have a Project Mask Saver along with their Channels Masks Saver. That way you can go back to those created Masks, even if you've ditched the Channel Masks?
@alanm.6096

Some very goods points have been raised, especially near the end. Is the next step for Adobe to program in an auto-analyze step that spits out that series of ranges/masks (ie: mids, shad, highlight, etc) so you can then work faster by taking each of the AI generated masks and then modifying the specific sections that have been pre-selected (with adjustments of course). In other words, just taking a great tool to another level in an effort to cut down processing time and achieve results faster. As Blake says, he goes to PS to get those final steps that make the photo great....so why wouldn't Adobe allow him to stay in camera raw (or LR) and do the same thing ? The border between LR/PS and camera raw continues to get fuzzier.
@f64Academy
@f64Academy 2 жыл бұрын
That's basically what I created with the ZSE RAW presets :) Regardless, RAW processing has its limitations and at this point will never be enough for my workflow on my portfolio worthy pieces. I need blend modes, blend if, opacity, Fill, Adjustment layers, etc. So right now, RAW processing, even with these advancements, is still rather basic for me. I like it that way.

Adobe is probably trying to make scales be more color depth independent with the 0 to 100 scale (black to white), whereas 0 to 255 made sense when we only had 8 bits per individual color (RGB). 255 decimal being FF hex, or 11111111 binary. So with the 'newer' 16 bits per color or 32 bits per color, the 0-100 scale is effectively in percent and makes more sense than 0-255. The delicate arch image is great, but to me the foreground bowl looks like is is lit by another light source from above, perhaps an alien ship is vertically descending to land...
@f64Academy
@f64Academy 2 жыл бұрын
Yep, I know nothing about what goes on in the background, haha. Good intel. For the Arch image, it was a very quick edit, and remember, my workflow doesn't stop here. This would be good enough to go into PS at this point and from there I would assess areas where I'd like to draw the viewer into. It's not complete ;)

@f64Academy
@f64Academy 2 жыл бұрын
I don't use silver efex anymore, but silver efex is more of an effect based piece of software, so to me that comes last in the workflow. This would be your overall first step since it's at the raw level.

If you switch to L.A.B > Curves> Channel, Lightness ~ the scale is 0 - 100. Adobe is using more tools that use the LAB Lightness mode.
@f64Academy
@f64Academy 2 жыл бұрын
Interesting. I think we'd still have better masking if it were the 255 scale. More increments would mean better blending. There are limitations with how much you can blend with these masks that we just don't have with blend if. But it makes sense to base it off the luminance channel rather than the RGB channels.

Awesome power...but terribly slow to access by comparison with the older tools. Most of the time i find that i am 'relighting' and drawing attention to specific regions of my images with a simple radial gradient, set to enhance exposure, sadows and reduce highlights. I have a preset for this. The new masking function forces me to select the Mask, then teh Radial Gradient, then swith off the frankly annoying Overlay, tehn choose the settings before applying the preset. Why on earth can't it just remember the last settings you used, and reapply them?! Even autotoggling teh mask to 'off' would be a start. What am I missing?
@f64Academy
@f64Academy 2 жыл бұрын
I think it's a process thing. I make presets that set the gradient for you automatically. Make sure you save it as a preset and not a brush setting.
@LucasPitcher13
@LucasPitcher13 2 жыл бұрын
@@f64Academy - Thanks Blake; it is more tha fact that the current version doesn't appear to remember the last tool settings in Lightroom; rather, you have to set up the tool fresh EVERY time it is used. For editing lots of images in LR, this makes for a LOT more work. Again, I may be missing something obvious!

Is it just me or do the luminance masks seem much less "feathered" than the previous range masks? I find the gradients of luminosity range to be fairly harsh in comparison. Or I could just be a moron... which is entirely plausible.
