The spread of plant pathogens can have enormous economic impacts on agricultural systems by decimating crop production. Utilizing artificial intelligence, researchers can predict the invasion of plant pathogens to mitigate their multifaceted effects.
[Aaron] Plex Sula is a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Florida College of Agricultural and Life Sciences. He studies within the department of plant pathology, working with EPI member Karen Garrett on projects funded by the USDA and CIGAR. Sula's research focuses on the global spread of plant pathogens. He and others within the lab hope to develop different surveillance strategies on a global scale, such as analyzing how climate has effects on pathogen spread. In addition, they work to understand the spatial strategies that better manage potential invasive species (pathogens and pests) that become introduced to Florida and the U.S.
